Just a tip I've seen from family and other youtubers. If you take a mobile torch with you like the blue can ones at ACE hardware, and you just lightly pass the flame over the faces of a gel block, it will just barely melt the outside. It smoothes it and improves clarity and observability massively. I know its one more thing to bring to the range, but I just think its a neat trick.

For anyone wondering what the VSS Vintorez he looked at yesterday might sound like when firing, this is actually similar, though a bit quieter since the suppressor on it isn't as good. People say that 7.62x39 and supersonic .300 blackout are very similar rounds with roughly identical ballistics, and the same can absolutely be said about this round and 9x39 even if the diameter is different, though 8.6 probably has a better BC as a result with a bullet of the same weight

Garand Thumb have a video about Vintorez. Him, Brandon Herrera, Donut Operator and Charlie ware firing Brandon's Vintorez at te ballistic gel and the 9x39 they had, produced insane noises after passing through the gel block. It's a pity Ian couldn't take that VSS he was doing video with, to the range, because it have original russian design baffle stack. Brandon's one have a replacement installed because the parts kit he got didn't had that part included.

@@lorddestructive Hey, i wrote that Brandon's VSS have replacement baffles. I must watch that video again, because what i remembered and understood is, he got machined new modern suppressor internals instead of original part presented in Ian's video. What Brandon said i understood in a way, that he stated the outside housing is just the tube, and what really makes the suppressor is those machined internals (don't remember now the exact proper english name of it, i know them as baffles).

Really underrated stuff for everything non-military use. There are some German swat-like police units which use the new HK437 "sneaker" with .300 Blackout. That's super silent for urban tactical and civilian protection purposes but still enough stopping power and not also hitting someone behind the bad guy^^ With 9" and folding stock it's basically MP5 size...just looks way sleaker, modern and badass. In fact there is even a version with a paddle-release if you're used to the MP5 for years.

Love very heavy subsonics. the 8.6 certainly seems interesting but not a lot of use to me because I'm limited to straight wall. A bit off topic but the straight wall cartridge law in Maryland has no maximum OAL like in other states, only the minimum muzzle energy of 1,200 foot pounds. that means that you could use a 45-70 if you wanted, unlike a lot of other straight wall states. ACME makes a 458 socom bullet in 576 grains that butterfly ammo loads supersonic in 45-70 called their "Buffalo Hump" so you could conceivably hand load these bullets subsonic and easily make the minimum muzzle energy requirement. I would love to use a converted siamese mauser or enfield rifle in 45-70 and shoot heavy for caliber bullets suppressed subsonic. of course this is all contingent on your rifle being capable of stabilizing such a large bullet reliably and shots being short enough to account for significant bullet drop.

Yes, I am hoping for the Texas Silencer Act to prevail in the 5th CCOA. However, I believe that similar laws are going forward elsewhere. Buying a barrel and assembling an upper I think is the way to go. There will be a problem with some of the shorter barrels in finding handguards. I would also go with the FAXON threaded adapter, and their muzzle brake. More expensive but who knows? As for the handguard, it is difficult but not impossible to find handguards less than 10" for LR308 uppers. Buy the ammunition specifically for your application. As said, I found most are $50 a box, but available.

Oh, almost forgot. The action of an AR or M4/M16 closing is loud enough to be heard from over 800m away. How do I know? My unit got to have a safety stand-down at the range from some Pentagon Medical LTC who was visiting right after doing a Paper on the subject. Once they got to 1000m meters, they inadvertently got drowned out by a bunch of passing Bradley's, but could hear it at 800m and clear as day at up to 600m. So, while shooting a Semi-auto suppressed with Subsonic ammo is quiet as hell, It's still recommended to take care due to the excessive noise from the action by itself.

I’m kind of with you on 338 whisper since you can get 300 blk or 350 legend mags that would probably work. I only say this because it seems to be like a 85% suppressed cartridge. With that in mind Q already has aluminum cases with reduced capacity. I get the magazine bit but it still seems like a compromise

I was wondering this myself, and aside from the magazine issue mentioned below I think the case geometry required to fit within the length makes it less reliable for feeding under bad conditions. You have to make it a straight walled cartridge effectively, so no taper for feeding or shoulder to headspace on. Would be nice to see JDJ get his due though, so many interesting cartridges that the industry eventually comes around to, often years later. My personal favorite is the 6.5 MPC; which was dismissed because it used modern high pressure propellants and now the US military is adopting an 80K psi cartridge 😂

@@ForgottenWeapons it wouldnt be the first ar cartridge to use a special mag. I know supersonic performance of the 8.6 is pretty awesome, but if it was designed to be ss, why did they use a case with 40 some grain capacity when it only takes powder charges in the teens to accomplish? The 9x39 and vintorez or ak make way more sense for a ss platform than an ar 10.

With 1-3 twist, I take it barrel life might be a bit short. Probably not an issue with a subsonic at $3 a pop. 🤠

It would be interesting to see the granularity of accuracy of this complete system. Given the weight of the bullet and the fact that it is being "aligned" in the magazine by the actual bullet, does the bullet suffer much from inertial setback as it is being stripped from the mag by the bolt as it cycles? That will affect the accuracy as OAL of the cartridge tends to become somewhat random as it is being chambered.

While that's a very good question, I honestly don't think that for a cartridge like this it matters. No matter what the advertising points say, this cartridge just doesn't make sense at any kind of range. If you're not shooting more than 400, 500 yards, which I hope you wouldn't be with an 8.6, then the deviation you'd see from bullet setback won't be significant enough to matter in real world conditions.
