Sigourney Weaver is an amazing woman and great actress. The movie “Gorillas in the Mist” was a great movie and essential in opening the eyes of the world to the cruelty and near extinction suffered by the mountain gorillas. However, there was a statement said in this video that I feel needs to be clarified. In the video, Sigourney states that the rules dictating your proximity to the gorillas, not touching the gorillas, and only visiting for one hour are new rules, put into place after she was there in 1988 but, in fact, were actually put into place when tourism of the mountain gorillas started back in the mid 1980’s, before the movie was made. I was there in 1990, visited 11 gorilla families, and those rules were firmly in place and strictly enforced then. Gorillas in the Mist was made in 1988 and those rules were just as firmly in place and strictly enforced then too. However, Sigourney Weaver and her movie crew did not visit the gorilla families set aside for tourism, they found a way around that. There are many gorilla families, some have been habituated and some not. Some families are studied regularly by the animal biologists, researchers and specialists, and others are not. The families I visited, those families that were habituated for the purposes of tourism, have been habituated to accept the presence of humans but are not regularly studied and are never touched. There are several families that Dian Fossey and other animal specialists studied, and have been studying on a regular basis and therefore become intimate with. In Dians case, she touched them, let them touch her (more like crawl all over her, wrestle together, etc), and just plain got far too close on a regular basis. These are the families that Sigourney Weaver and the movie crew visited, those families that the animal biologists, researchers and specialists were studying regularly because they were the ones that were used to being that up close and personal to humans, readily available and easily accessible for filming. The rules are in place for exactly the reasons that Sigourney describes in the video, gorillas are susceptible to all human diseases and by touching them or allowing them to touch you, you can easily transmit any disease to the gorillas of which they have no defense mechanisms. The problem here is that any animal biologist, researcher, tourist, or celebrity are no more immune to transmitting human diseases as the rest of us. Just because someone is a celebrity doesn’t mean that they cannot transmit diseases to gorillas, and should therefore adhere to the rules just like the rest of us, but in the case of this movie, money and fame found its way around these very important rules set in place to protect these gorillas for very good reasons. They took a gigantic risk having their film crews and actors in such close proximity to the gorillas, but in hindsight, nothing bad happened thank god. Remember that there were only 350 +- mountain gorillas left in the world at the time. So Sigourney’s statement, “When I was here 20 years ago, I was allowed to get incredibly close to these gorillas, they would even climb on top of me. But that type of close contact is no longer allowed. The fact that we share over 98% of the same genes with these animals means they can easily catch our illnesses. So now we have to keep a distance of no less than 25 feet to prevent the spread of disease and visits are limited to just one hour a day.” Well this statement is true if you are a tourist visiting gorilla families habituated for tourism. But once you have permission to go to those sites that are under the control of the National Geographic Society for study , or whoever is controlling them now (which is almost impossible to get unless you are an animal biologist, animal researcher, some sort of gorilla specialist, or a celebrity with a camera crew), it seems you then have the right to break some rules. What is my point with all this you ask??? When I first saw the movie after I came back from Africa, it chapped my ass that they allowed Hollywood celebrities to just have their way with the gorillas when we, the tourists, had to abide by very strict rules of proximity, restricted viewing time after hours of hiking uphill, and our actions while around the gorillas. However, that being said, I realized early on that the movie was really more of a theatrical documentary (a very good one I might add), completely based on truth, and a fairly accurate account of Dian Fosseys life at Karisoke and the plight of the gorillas. The movie succeeded in sending a huge and important message to the world, and without it there would arguably be no more mountain gorillas left, so I guess their actions with respect to the gorillas can and should be understood because the movie ultimately garnered the worldwide attention it desperately needed to help and protect these precious animals. Ultimately, I believe Dian Fossey and Sigourney Weaver did right by the gorillas despite their proximity issues, and Sigourney Weaver is still helping them to this day. Even gorillas need a heroine. Now they have two. BUT, NO MORE TOUCHING!

You sound more upset about the fact that tourists on mass aren't allowed to have physical contact with the gorillas. There's a whole lot less celebrities than there are tourists, and if it's for the purpose of raising awareness like Gorillas in the Mist successfully did, and isn't needlessly repeated, the benefits outweigh the costs. Sigourney and crew didn't needlessly repeat physical contact.

@KwokWork the sex sounds are actually the sounds gorillas make as they forage in the daytime, the low sounds travel well through the dense vegetation and helps to keep the group together, even the females sound like this. As for the music, well ask Sigourney! lol

I was wondering something in the name of preventing extinction and would welcome answers. has anyone ever explored the possibility, that somewhere in the Western Hemisphere (e.g. Central or South America), there might be a forest that could sustain a great ape population, suitable food plants etc.? If there were, it could be part of the extinction solution, just my thoughts. Input welcomed.

More than 20 years ago, when she was filming "Gorillas in the Mist," she was taught a sound that to gorillas means "hello, I won't hurt you". You can hear this sound in the video as she does when approaching the gorillas, is a specific growl.

Wow. Despite it's annoying, pretentious undertones, as documentaries featuring Sigourney Weaver always seem to have, this isn't bad. But she does realise they don't know who she is, right? If they did remember her they'd be pissed if anything. 'This is for pretending to eat those leaves, bitch!' *punches*
