My father in law served with the Ghurkas as a combat medic in WW2. He always had a high regard for these tough troops, as do everyone in Britain. Although he never spoke about his experiences during the war( as most of his generation didn't) It wasn't till he died I discovered a kurkuri while cleaning out his closet. My mother in law told me he was awarded it by the Ghurka for saving so many on the battle field. It has since been encased a place on display as befitting the honour.

My uncle (Br Raj ) was in charge of the medical orderlies in WWI where wounded from the horrific battlefields were bought into military field hospitals to be treated before being transported to near by hospitals. He also witnessed the bravery of the Gurkhas in battle, respected and admired them and when peace was declared the Gurkhas gave him a special Kukri - much larger than the normal kukri which was used to decapitate a bulls head with one stroke (for annual regimental good luck) whilst more than one stroke meant bad luck for the year . The tradition of respect has since been passed onto the family about the Gurkhas. Jeff

That is a huge compliment from a guardsman. I served, not in the Guards though. You guards are best in the world at drill.My Grandad W/Sgt 821496 Frederick William Ward, served in 21st anti tank regt RA Grandads WW2 He joined the Army in 32 and served 6yrs pre war India Lucknow, and trained Horses for Horse Artillery. Use to go into the mountains to buy horses from tribesmen with Gurkha and Sikh troops. He was also a PTI, and unarmed combat instructor, so the Sikhs taught him how to use the garot knot, and Gurkhas the Kurka knife. He returned to UK in 38, volunteered for BEF. Injured in Belgium in 1940 and casivaced from Dunkirk after 3 days in and out of the water waiting for a boat. He spent a yr in recovery at Bovington. Then as a Bombadier (Cpl), he was posted to the Gurads Depot as a PTI, cause of his training in India. He taught the first Commando unit formed in WW2 Guards Commandos (Shortly after Royal Marines trained as Commandos). He then Sgt instructor at the Depot cause the Guards were having a Division formed with Armour. So he taught Gunnery on tanks etc. Posted back to 21st Anti tank Regt RA in 44, which transfered to Guards Armoured Div and in VIII Corps. They landed in Normandy 26th June (DDay plus 20). He in all the major tank battles around Caen and Villiers Bocage. Up against 12th SS Panzer Div Hitleryouth. Both sides rarely took prisoners. They then had rest and refit, transferred to XXX Corps and liberated Paris and then his own Regt liberated Brussels. Sept 44 Operation Market Garden (huge war film called Bridge to far about it). XXX Corps on the ground, US and British Airbourne I'm sky. Guards Armoured Div spearhead, and his Regt in thick of it. His Regt laid down covering fire as the 82nd stormed across the river to take Nijmagen Bridge. After Arnhem. They battled near Antwerp. Then Dec 44 in battle of the Bulge, he got injured, and casivacced. Returned to unit early 45 after hospital. In time to liberate the camps near Bergen Belsen area. So he knew all about Drill with Gurkha and Guards. I was Jnr Ldr RA in 88, ruptured achilles tendon, so reininlisted in 90 to RCT Maritime, on Army Landing Craft, Mexeflote Rafts, Small fast boats, and Tugs. Attached to 3rd Commando Brigade Royal Marines. I left in 93. But after split with ex in 01. I joined SAS Signals Sqn TA in 02 to 04. Broke my back on a weekend off from SAS Selection in 03. So only served 5yrs.

@60ritikanand694 жыл бұрын
@@thedebator1115 I appreciate your concerns for for your country. In fact, your concerns are very much genuine. Even I readily agree that India has messed up several times in maintaining diplomatic relationships with Nepal. I also believe that India should have minimum influence in Nepal's politics. But even you know that it is simply not possible. Reality is that Nepal is far too small to remain unaffected by its surroundings. It, being landlocked, is largely dependent on India for imports and much of other needs. So, I don't know if you would like it or not but India, in general, treats Nepal like a Semi-protectorate. Third, Nepal simply has far less resources to draw others attention. Its only significance lies in its proximity to Siliguri Corridor, the Chicken Neck of India. If don't know already, Mao Zedong, Founder of People's Republic of China had claimed that Tibet is the palm of China and its five fingers are : Ladakh, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. He believed that it was the responsibility of Chinese to 'liberate' them like Tibet. So, it is natural for Indian government to be skeptical of any foreign influences especially Chinese. Also, British didn't capture Nepal not because of their inability but because Nepal wasn't as lucrative as say Bengal, which controlled 12%of world's gdp at the time of arrival of British. Fourth, frequent blockades are only because Indian government is not 'responsible' for Nepali citizens. India does everything for it only because of either goodwill or to keep it free of any foreign influence and maintain the status quo. Fifth, in addition to being landlocked, Nepal severely suffers from shortage of arable land which makes it dependent on other countries even for the food. Sixth, due its rough terrain, Nepal has a severe shortage of industries and manufacturing sectors which creates unemployment and forces Nepali youth to migrate. Seventh, despite being blessed with beauty, why is it that Nepal gets 80 times less number of tourists per year than even Uttarakhand, which was once a part of Greater Nepal. The only reason is instability. Nepal, in its current form would have already been captured by China if not for India balancing it. Same goes for Bhutan. And last but not least, it has far too small population to even utilize it as a productive manpower. Now, I am going to make a suggestion that you gonna hate : Nepal should officially merge with India and become 29th state. Are you angry now? Yes? But please hear me out. First of all, Indian government would not be able to ignore Nepali citizens' voices any more and it would become 'responsible' for them. Whom are they gonna blockade? Their own people. Second, it will increase purchasing power parity of Nepalese as goods coming from India would be lot cheaper. 3. Trade deficit from India, which is like a looming shadow on economy of Nepal, would be erased. 4. India is often accused of encroaching not only Nepali land but also its culture, language and values. Now if Nepal becomes a part of India, what will India encroach? It’s own land!! The culture of both Nepal and India will flourish as well as assimilate better than now. 5. Nepal will be a separate state of India and not a part of U.P., Bihar or West Bengal. This means Nepal can exercise almost all of her present rights other than the one involving territorial disputes with China, in which Union government will take charge. 6. While state leaders of Nepal will work hard to improve the lives of Nepalis, it will be the responsibility of the Federal government of India to counsel the policies of the states, promulgate federal policies for the whole country, provide the Nepalese state with frequent funds as well as take the immediate charge of the natural emergencies like flood, earthquake, etc. The state leaders of Nepal will have better chance of building the Nepalese nation than now, since there will always be someone at the back for assistance and guidance. 8. Under Indian Constitution, states are granted vital rights ranging from levying of the taxes to maintaining internal security, as well as deriving own educational and cultural policies. So, Nepal would retain its identity. Also, any achievement of India will automatically be the achievement of Nepalis and vice versa. 9. The largest natural resource Nepal has is water. Unfortunately, the amount of hydro-electricity generated from it is minimal. The Federal Government of India, with its huge budget and capacity to lure large multinationals and international lending agencies, can easily get several of such Hydo-Power projects going. This will but benefit Nepal and Nepalis in large because the electricity will now be sold not only to China but to several other Indian states with very little hassles. 10. Nepal would have backing of Indian army to secure its borders. It would reduce internal instability and external influences. Indian government would promote Nepali tourism and its tourism industry will boom like that of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. 11. Nepal's infrastructure and organization would be much improved. With grants from richer southern zones and Western zones. Nepal's economy will increase rapidly like that of Sikkim whose per capita income is six times as that of Nepal. And last but not least, the legendary Gurkha soldiers, who now constitute a significant portion of the Indian Army, are working not for their motherland but for a foreign land. These Gurkhas, in one sense, are not soldiers but just mercenaries (hired army motivated by money rather than love for motherland or national glory). If Nepal were to be a part of India, these brave soldiers would be working for their motherland and their bravery will count as glory and not just paid service. So, that's all I had to say. You are free to voice your disagreement. Thank you for reading. Have a great day ahead. 😇😇😇
