Akechi's illogical motivations always struck me as that of a naive little kid. He clearly has a lot of trauma from his upbringing and a lot of time to build resentment towards Shido who caused it all. But he also is a kid who grew up with no real parental figure, so that need for that kind of guardian love is still there. On top of the fact that he's really young (14...?) when he first gets his power from Yaldabaoth. It doesn't surprise me all that much that a young teen would come up with a really grandiose (and stupid) goal like working for Shido, only to stab him in the back. Especially cuz until young adulthood, adolescents are still driven by the emotion based part of the brain when making decisions. And I feel like once Akechi started dirtying his hands, he likely felt like there's no turning back now/he's already come too far to give up, so he follows his Shido plot to its natural conclusion :/ Akechi definitely is a commentary on a lot of specifically Japanese sociocultural issues. Mostly its extremely lacking orphanage and foster care system (especially among the developed nations). Also the really problematic way that adoptive kids are usually never seen as true, or natural parts, of the family. But yeah, definitely doesn't excuse his actions. Agreed that 3rd semester Akechi is the best since he's finally being truly genuine. And yeah I'm also glad that the rest of the PT never really acknowledged Akechi or tried to be "friends" with him and vice versa since that would be too unrealistic after everything that's happened.

I agree. Akechi's dumb grandiose plan and his childish hatred to Joker always felt like a good part of his character. It never felt like bad writing to me, since it made sense when you take in the fact that he never had anyone in his life (adult guardian or friend) to really challenge his viewpoints and just say "Bro, that's kinda dumb".

Royal, ironically, did Akechi justice. He was by far my least favourite main character in Vanilla, as he just felt fake and his whole "oh I'm actually THE bad guy alllll aloooog" shtick was bland to me. Didn't help that his social link was progressed via story progression. We didn't learn much about him and thus, felt really flat to me. Then Royal happened. Holy shit, Akechi was done FAR better in Royal. An actual social link was super enjoyable, made even more so due to all the hints that he's the one whose gonna put a cap in your ass. The rivalry angle was pretty great as well, with the Rank 8 event being one of my favourite social link events in any persona game. Add to that, all of the 3rd semester just being Akechi in his more pure, bastard form was brilliant. He's basically like "all of you are fucking dumb, expect Joker. He's aight". Akechi became a proper Bastard, and I love him for it. I do hope he makes appearances in spinoffs with his true 'persona' in the future.

Akechi was an alright character in vanilla Persona 5, but Royal did him so much justice, no pun intended. I’m so glad he was given more love in the game. Akechi never intended to kill shido. He wanted to bring shido to the top then reveal that he had an affair and a child he didn't look after. Remember that in Japan honor and family are very important so if akechi showed everyone this shido would then be hated by everyone and shamed right after being at the top. Akechi was also very easy to manipulate by shido because he wanted praise as he was an orphan and in Japan they're hardly even considered citizens wich made him Want to be loved and acknowledged

I find Akechi's stance in P5R to be a pretty compelling one given the events of the last two palaces. Akechi is the first person to stand up to you and effectively tell you the vigilante Justice of the Phantom Thieves can be abused or will make people complacent. "If no one else wants the Justice they fight for, isn't that blind self righteousness?". I love this line so much, as he perfectly points out the exact flaw on the PT's motivations so far. I had the good fortune of playing through the game as Royal first, since I only got into Persona a few months ago. Going through his confidant really made him feel compelling as a rival. Particularly around the time of Okumura's palace, where the Phantom Thieves are more doing the bidding of the public rather than any true Justice, I started to doubt the legitimacy of my actions, and it all comes to a head after Shido is defeated and the public outright rejects you anyway. Akechi is more than just your rival. He is a confidant for a reason- he leads you to the truth, as all confidants/s links do. And certainly his devotion to reality, over the interference of someone like Maruki in the third semester, seals his motivation of sticking to true Justice, not just doing what is most acceptable to most people. That is the internal conflict of the Phantom Thieves throughout the course of the original game- a transformation from doing good by the people to doing right by yourself, regardless of who it hurts and who it helps. The third semester gives the Thieves and Akechi a common enemy that reinforces his point, and one that is objectively trying to do as much good as possible. You and Akechi accept that personal free will is more important that destroying pain or pursuing personal goals like revenge or fame (it took Ryuji a long time to accept the latter isn't what being a PT is about). I can see how without that confidant and without the third semester that Akechi would've been seen as kind of a confused enemy, an amalgam of too many things at once. But his motives and philosophy add a dark shade to the Phantom Thieves that end up mattering greatly in the last two palaces of Royal. In both cases, you reject the will of the masses and rely on your own convictions to lead you to the best outcome. In a way, the Phantom Thieves become Maruki's Akechi.

I loved Akechi playing Persona 5. The moment where he revealed Loki gave me chills the first time I saw it. But then people made me hate him. Particularly, I had friends who would try to defend him by saying something about "Shido was blackmailing him into doing the bad shit, he didn't actually want to do it" which was never even hinted at in the story, so I don't know where they pulled that shit out. But just seeing people perform mental gymnastics to try and defend Akechi as being a good person made me hate Akechi as a character by association. Thankfully, Royal allowed me to engage with what I loved about Akechi as a character and I'm back to loving him.

A love it when a character can make you go from not caring about them at all to them being everything you want in a character. I barely cared for Akechi in P5 vanilla, and I never understood how he had so many fans at that time. When I played Royal I was super into his new social link rework. It was so interesting and I always looked forward to when I would be able to see him next. When I got to the 3rd semester Akechi shot up to one of my top 3 favorite Persona characters of all time. Now whenever I think of Royal all my mind goes to is Akechi. His social link, his rivalry with Joker, the glove and their promise, how unabashed he is in the 3rd semester, all of it. Call me a goober, but I had only him in my party for Maruki's palace because I stopped caring about the other party members. And I'm not even trying to push anything gay between them, I just think Akechi is the perfect deuteragonist in this story, and the dynamic between him and Ren is the best out of the entire cast (no one else comes close). Their relationship (however you choose to interpret it) is quite meaningful and yes I am someone that thinks Our Light is about them. Anyway this is all just my opinion and feelings. I just love talking about these characters. I'm so glad you made a video about him!

Just as joker is branded as a villain by society, but is infact a hero. Aketchi who is branded a beacon of hope in society is instead a psychopath. I think that parallel is clear and believable in a game that is about “masks” that society forces on you. It’s pretty believable that those in power would act a certain way towards the public.

I think with Akechi, the problem was his own motives were twisted. He told himself that the motive was to follow Shido to eventually betray him, but ultimately a lot of the stuff he did was because on some level he still wanted to win his father's approval. That kind of thing is not uncommon in people who have problematic relationships with their parents. You see this pattern of contradictions in a lot of Akechi's development. He worked really hard so he wouldn't be continually rejected by society and got that, but wasn't happy because on some level he knew it was fake. If people actually knew his background, his reputation would disappear and people would no longer trust him. That's part of the reason he hated Joker. Joker, like him, was also rejected by society but still managed to find a place that accepted him without needing to go through the same things Akechi did, and on top of that, Joker's acceptance was real. Despite Akechi doing all the right things by society's viewpoint, Joker still had all the things he wanted while he did not. But I think he definitely needed the social link and the 3rd semester because without those it felt like the player didn't really get a chance to understand what Akechi felt. It was pretty clear how he became twisted and jaded, but there was no real punchline other than him dying senselessly. So I'm glad Royal did decide to address that.

TLDR:Lots of evidence too go against his idea that Akechi dislikes Joker. The only thing I disagree with in this vid is when you said Akechi doesn't like Joker, but just respects him. Simply because it is stated and implied several times that this isn't the case. For example when you fight him in the palace, Morgana mentions his smile for Joker. Or how it's implied that he genuinely got vulnerable when discussing his past and such on confidant visits, for example with the Jazz club stuff, at the end of the game if you go back there when saying good byes, two things happen. One the owner says that Akechi doesn't really take anyone there, adding truth to Akechi's comment during his confidant that it's a special place. Then Joker still has his glove in his pocket and it's semi implied that he has basically been clutching it the whole time since he'd gotten it sub-consciously, or Joker's refusal that he actually died after either leaving the palace the day you fought him or after you beat Shido (can't remember) when he's in bed. Another point is that Akechi evolves his persona into Hereward, which is a combination of Loki and Robin Hood, and if you read his Persona description before fighting Maruki, then you will see that (also with the RH on the chest), just with the basis of how Persona's work, both Robin Hood and Loki were actually Akechi, just different sides of him, Robin Hood can be seen as what he wanted to be when younger, going off his confidant visit at the arcade when he talks about heroes. The last point is again about Hereward, every other member awakens their final tier of persona within their homes, they literally went out of their way to design rooms for each party member. Where as with Akechi, he evolves his persona with Joker at Lebanc, implying that he sees Leblanc, or more likely Joker himself, as his home. Some random side things to support all the rest I mentioned, No More What If's if listened to from the eyes of Akechi describes how he is feeling about Joker and having too do what he "needs" too do in order to achieve his goal, as well as the ending theme seemingly written as Joker for Akechi, also when the group meets up with Lavenza in the office, Akechi is surprised they invited him, and Ryuji makes a comment , and they go out of their way with Akechi's portrait to show a smile, which I think is genuine and that it made him feel a little happy. Lastly it's implied that if you go ahead and accept Maruki's reality, Akechi accepts it. Sure he's mad at first, but I think that anger is because it means Joker genuinely cares for him enough that he would sacrifice his own justice for him. The reason I say this, is because in the picture you get for that ending, it shows the group in Leblanc, the gang is all having fun, but Akechi and Joker, both of the wild cards are looking directly at the camera. They know what's going on. They didn't forget everything like Lavenza said would happen, this is supported if you go into the thieves den and look at the title for that picture when you're purchasing it. The rest of the group may not see Akechi as a friend, and for good reason especially for Haru and Futaba, But I think Joker and Akechi genuinely do see each other as friends, and are really close. Just not in your traditional friend way. They trust each other, for example with their showtime attack, Akechi uses Desperation oh himself, which lore/game wise would raise his attack and lower his defense a lot, Joker picks up on this seamlessly and rushes ahead with a diversionary attack to distract the enemy and make an opening for Akechi to release a barrage of attacks, Akechi knows the enemy isn't finished yet and doesn't even turn around instead keeps walking and Joker was already ready with his gun to finish it, they're so in sync especially for an improvised attack.

I believe Akechi is a genuine detective. He shows his skills in Persona Q2 where he and Naoto are on the same page as one another even finishing each other’s sentences. There’s also the whole Sae’s palace problem that he solved. He also is shown to be working on other cases in the Mementos Mission Manga, in the manga he’s shown solving a serial murder case. He also says during his boss fight that he dedicated himself to his studies as a detective. He’s a good detective he just fakes some of his cases to boost his popularity along with Shido’s. I honestly can't wait for persona 6, I feel like the characters we'll meet will also melt our hearts in a way. I feel they will represent the inner hope that some people wish in this world. I'm not sure but I'm really excited to find out. I like the concept seeing theses characters raising from their issues and finding some sort of hope that everything will get better. But they struggle to realize that, so I think this where the card the persona 6 MC is holding (If you saw the picture) might be a symbol of that but that's just a theory. Another theory I have is that those cards is how the activate their persona. It's kinda cool when you think about it, they just burn it and boom their persona awakens. But these cards only show up once they find a bit of hope in themselves and they are willing to better themselves. But still that's only guess.

Now that I finished it, I'm about to write an essay. I really liked this video, I always liked Akechi even in vanilla and knowing that you viewed him as some sort of objectively bad mess made me sad. I think Akechi was never supposed to represent law or order, I think he was supposed to the embodiment of the result of a corrupt society as everything about his life was shaped by Shido discarding his mother and having her give birth out of wedlock which is viewed negatively in places like Japan. Then his mother committed suicide and he was passed around shitty foster homes to eventually he had to live on his own. He's supposed to represent the dark version of what the thieves could've become if they didn't have bonds with each other, he's also rebelling against society but in a much more terrible way. Even his wildcard holds less Personas than Joker because he has no connections. So I don't think he was like a bad concoction of ideas but was just presented poorly and lacked the screen time neccessary to make him fleshed out. I agree with you that the Royal confidant smooths over his rivalry and hatred so much better! It's like his true personality is leaking out and it builds up his boss fight way better too! You made a lot of good points about the 3rd semester making him feel more consistent, but one thing I disagree with is that you said he didn't feel like a detective in vanilla. In vanilla he still figures out how to cheat in Sae's casino and always felt like the smartest man in the room with that one step ahead attitude. I do respect your opinion I'm just stating my shitty biased one. I see Akechi as vengeful demon that was pretty much consumed by his will to rebel, and I think Royal's new semester really shows us how ruthless and bloodthirsty he can he while fighting shadows which I loved. And now onto the point about ATLUS not making us sympathize with Akechi, I'm glad they didn't either. However I think it needs to be said that I think they want you to understand why he ended up this way which harkens back to the fact he was all alone with no bonds. It's part of the theme of every Persona game as cliche as it is, you need friends or isolation will make you go insane. The exact same thing happened to Adachi who just drank beer and watched TV all day. Although the fundamental difference is Akechi being a monster had more external forces involved. Akechi COULD'VE been a good person but chose NOT to be. And the end when he sacrifices himself to save reality is the closest thing he'll ever get to a redemption but I still don't think ATLUS wants his actions to be forgiven which is good. It's a huge misconception that Akechi fans forgive him because we don't. Also some of us aren't into the gay AkeShu shipper stuff like me, I just think he's an interesting character. Glad you liked him in the new semester I'm leaving a like on this video! Hope your channel grows.

I thought Akechi was fine in the original, because the idea of a party member as a villain (and, like, a real party member, not the whole business in Persona 2) was really cool to me, and I thought the kind of fresh idea for the series made up for the less than stellar execution. i do believe the reason why royal feels so fresh and has added so much to the original persona 5 is due to the new director and his take on how a quote on quote villain in persona should be as you go through persona 3 , 4 and 5 there are similar sturtured story beats such as fighting god 3 times in a row whuch is a series staple i know but also how there was always the big baddy in each game to be the cause of everything eg shido and adachi and ikutski and it was starting to feel drawn out in p5 for third time and i feel thats the flaw on the story writers and director's part as to use the same story struture again and again the fresh take on royals is that they do away with that idea and introduce maruki as an antagonist to the game who isnt a villain in the story and isnt treated as such providing much needed nuance in the structure of the story kudos to the director breaking the story structure of previous persona games since it really breathes new life in what the series will do from here on out also comepletely agree on goro really wish whoever wrote goro for royal just rewrote him entirely for royal or just wrote him the way he is now in the original

I greatly appreciate what Royal did for Goro. In Vanilla, he felt very underwritten; don't get me wrong, i enjoyed him greatly and i'm glad he was in the original, but to see him so poorly handled made me upset. "Ripe with Potential" would be the best way i'd describe Vanilla Goro. But Royal: He's a proper confidant, you find out more about him, the rivalry behind him and Ren is genuine and actually ties into his fight and resolution, and best of all: He feels like he's properly written in this. I commend Atlus for going back and, like Fither said, not "redeem" Goro, but give him more character besides "I hate my daddy but want his love too"...... They gave complexity to him, and in a way that feels natural and right for the character, and that's awesome!

I totally agree that Akechi was poorly written in the original P5,but I think makes sense. This is more of a headcanon of mine, but I always saw him as someone who doesn't even know what the fuck he wants. He wanted to kill Shido or at least he convinced himself he wanted to do that. Dude has put on so many masks he doesn't even know what the fuck he's doing. Only when he lost his only goal after Shido had a change of heart,he could truly be himself. He needed Shido out of the picture one way or another. Now,with the thing of "wanted to be acknowledged" is something a lot of people with similar experiences go through. Take for example toxic relationships; the abuser usually makes the victim(in most cases someone who has gone through horrible traumatic events. In Goro's case it would be watching his mom working as a prostitute to get money and ultimately killing herself, living in the mess that is Japan's foster care system, etc) think that they're are only person who understands them or cares about them. Before meeting Ren and ironically enough,Shido was Akechi's only "genuine" bond. He knew more about Akechi than even Sae, Akechi's third closest person and who only knew him as the gleeful,justice-seeking Detective Prince. And let's remember that he was fucking 15/16 when he met Shido. At that age I was reading cringy-ass Creepypasta fanfictions and being busy trying to convince other that "i aM nOt LiKe ThE oThEr GiRlS" (thank God I'm not like that anymore....,ugh)
