Gospel singers possess impressive vocal power and voice technique. How can singers who have not grown up in an African-American church or who live far from this tradition develop the same power and control in their voice? Is this something you're born with or can it be trained? Gospel artist and voice coach Monique Thomas joins me to discuss these questions and offer her insight.

Yes indeed. Vocal power is not about pushing or forcing the voice. It's about making the mechanism work as efficiently as possible. If we are able to balance the airflow and the closure of the vocal folds, we will automatically get a boost that makes the voice more powerful.

Blueridge4000 It’s really a mixed bag. No person can be a serious opera singer without studying technique and some years of training. In gospel singing, there is no formal training or school. Some gospel singers put a lot of work into their vocal technique and practice regularly. Others don’t put in the work and think if they just turn up to church every week, God will do the rest.

I would have said so last year, but after learning so much about metal singers and the technique that goes with it, I disagree. The only thing that competes with that is classical singing. Listen to bands like Nightwish.

Total Voice Studio in the aspect of vocal training the background techniques are applied to lead vocals. Gospel choir music goes from classical styles like “Total Praise”(Richard Smallwood) to a contemporary jazz styles like “Strange” (Ricky Dillard) & even to a churchy style like “There is no way”(Ricky Dillard). There are many different styles in Gospe Musicl. Mostly only one style on Opera. The vocal prep from singing in a good Gospel choir is superior when compared to others.

I love this quote from American ethnic dancer La Meri “The only reason for mastering technique is to make sure the body does not prevent the soul from expressing itself.” I believe there is a place for learning technique, but it is not an end in itself. Thanks for watching!

intresting channel just subbed and il hope il get more informations , i started singin in a young age and i was sinign more before puberty but when it did came it hit me hard and it didn't know how to work on my voice when it did hit me ! i sing blues and soulful music and some of rnb as well , sometimes i like to sing other types of music pop riggie ... etc just for the love of music , but in some soulful songs need a full controle of ur voice and i dk how to work on it and idk how to work on my range spécialy on my throat voice!

Thanks for watching, Issam! Your experience is very common. The research tells us that most people tend to have positive experiences of singing when they’re very young, and then many children (especially boys) give up singing when they hit puberty. Some never come back to it, but it’s great to see you’re still singing. Humans are capable of singing beautifully across their entire life span and it’s a very healthy thing to do for many reasons, including confidence, mental and physical health. Spend some time with a voice coach that specialises in soul, RnB, Gospel, Blues and that will help you. I will try to upload some more videos soon on these styles.

How do you add growls and squalls into your arsenal? I have a naturally bright instrument. My voice is very bright especially when I go higher on the scale. So, I wanted to make my high notes more rugged and gospel sounding. So, how can I do it?

I try not to let singers add growls for the sake of it. The best growls are those that actually mean something - that is, they are connected to the lyrics of the song and the intent the singer is trying to express. Bright vowels are not necessarily a problem when you are singing gospel music. If you wanted to explore some darker vowels and what that would do for your singing, then you should start low in your range and using chest voice. Make sure your voice will allow you to make clear open vowels in the bottom of your voice and that when you move from note to note in the chest voice, that there is no sense of you using volume or force to help the pitch. The dark vowels you could use down here are "ah" (father) and "oh" (boat).

@@TotalVoiceStudio I understand exactly where you're coming from, but I really do feel like I'm limited with my voice all because I don't know how to growl. Yeah, I'm a light lyric tenor. Yeah, I can make my chest voice and mixed voice darker by changing my vowels, but there's still something missing. I really want to learn how to growl. I'm a gospel singer and I feel awkward when I cover a song that involves a whole bunch of growls and squalls. If you can help me I would really appreciate it.

God Chaser it’s best to work with a voice coach on these sorts of things. It is not something I could easily teach in a message.

How many times a week do you suggest vocally exercising? 3-4 times or less not to strain the voice

La Radia the same principals apply to training your voice as to training any muscles in your body. It really depends on how long you are vocalising, what kinds of exercises you’re doing, and how vocally fit you are. Yes, I think 3-4 times a week for 20 mins is reasonable. For this, I’d also check out my video on how to do a warmup. Happy singing!

Truly impressed with her knowledge, that level of detail is amazing, much respect. Have to admit it saddens me how people love to know how to sing like Black gospel singers, but don't acknowledge the level of generational suffering that is the bedrock of that style of expression. People want to "sound Black," but certainly don't want the experience that goes with it.

It depends on your experience and level of confidence with your voice. If it's just leading during a rehearsal, then maybe it's a good idea to push yourself and take a challenge. If you're leading in a concert, then you will want a song that's within your range and to spend time learning the lyrics, rhythm and melody.

I need help, my voice is all over the place. My lowest note is F2 and I can sing it all the way to F4 and there after my voice turns into a sqeaky tone way different from my regular voice and it sounds nasty and it goes all the way up to F5.

Is there a different placement for gospel music? It sounds as though placement is behind the nose?

Voice Scientists don't really like the term "placement" because it is inaccurate. Sound waves go where they will. They cannot be placed or put anywhere. However, we do feel vibrations go to different parts of the mouth and vocal tract as a result of changes we make to the vowels, volume and technique. So, I guess this is the placement of sorts and just playing with semantics. Depends on whether you put the cart before the horse or vice versa. In answer to your question, traditional Gospel singing is closely related to the speech patterns of African Americans. This means the vowel choices are brighter rather than the round dark sounds of European Classical singing. Also, the registration is different. A lot of gospel singing happens in the "mix voice" which from the singer's perspective, will feel like it is resonating in a higher place when compared to chest voice. The mix voice is the secret to how many gospel singers are able to sing high powerful sounds that appear effortless.

my question.. can I sound black? is it unachievable or still it's a matter of technique and I can actually in the end have at least some of this roundness and richness of what black guys seem to have naturally? :( sometimes i think i do sound like black a bit... but still lots missing.. this video gave me actually some hope :D

Mahalia Jackson is the Queen of Gospel - so many of the greats grew up listening to her. Aretha Franklin was also a wonderful gospel singer and Whitney Houston did a bit of gospel. Other great females are Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Mavis Staples. For the men, James Cleveland was an important influence. Also, Smokie Norful has an amazing voice. Same also for Sam Cooke, Edwin Hawkins and David Peaston.

Thanks for watching, Chaylen. I think gospel began in the church, just like blues began in the bars and juke joints. But both styles have evolved to become something bigger than their beginnings. There are professional performing gospel choirs that rarely perform in churches and many contemporary artists who have been influenced by the gospel sound.

People want to "sound Black," but certainly don't want the experience what goes with it. They used to sing Negro Spirituals on plantations as a cry out to God. Often to find some kind of relief from things like watching a loved one be worked so hard they would literally die after their muscle separated from their bones. Those precious notes are born of a cry out for protection, and relief from unimaginable suffering unleashed by oppressors. Go through that, and I guarantee you'll be able to sing Gospel without being told how. It will rise from the depths of your soul!

Authentic Gospel originates FROM the soul and is TO God. Techniques are fine, but technique alone only produces mimicry.

Yes, analysing what some people do naturally and have been doing all their lives without too much thought. But if you weren't so lucky to have that background and training, then analysing can be helpful. As a native speaker, I never had to learn English grammar, but people who learn English as a second language need to learn it.

@@TotalVoiceStudio I hear you. Going with your example. It's not just trying to learn English. It would be like trying to learn English from a certain group of English speakers to acquire their dialect. Especially if that dialect is natural hard to immitate well and highly sought-after even when the people aren't. People that aren't us have been trying to drain, strain, analyze and reverse engineer our gospel ,blues, soul music, r&b etc etc etc. When I watch old interviews of Black artist they would get the question over and over , what is soul? It wasn't a harmless curiosity it was so they could try to brand profit and exclude the originators. Yet it's a gift that's not refundable or transferable. So I laugh when I see on these singing shows people that have been chasing what soul is for decades. Saying to people during their audition that mimic what soul was back in the day , that's soul! Well half of a century later they are passing the class with a B. Except soul and gospel comes from the spirit not a book. So if you get another Elvis sure that's soul, for you. It's not soul though. Because what we have that you want is non refundable or transferable. 🥰
