I think CCM is easier for people to engage in , you can play simple and be anointed as well , you don’t need all the tricks

@@AdamFontenet-iy3tb I think you are right with respect to the guitar parts in CCM. It takes a good ear and knowledge of presets to make different appropriate combinations of sounds and accompaniments on the electric guitar while playing CCM. But I think a well versed gospel musician could probably learn that in a few weeks if he has the resources (pedalboard, software, etc.) or gets into learning the tricks about them.

Agreed that the difference in complexity between gospel and CCM is undeniable. it should be noted however that, as with any other genre, there is a huge difference between the way amateurs play CCM and the way the PROS play CCM. Definitely not something that could be learned in a matter of weeks. I've been working on it for years and still have much to learn!

I was invited to play at a “CCM” church few weeks ago on keyboards. We had couple songs where it was just keyboard for the songs. I gave them a few “flat 5” and “7 sharp 9” and Diminished 7th chords. The WL looked over at me with a big grin on his face. 😂

Well stated KC. Thank you for sharing your early experiences of self doubt. We've all been there but the important thing is to always remember the one person we must focus on is God. The gifts come from him and on judgement day he won't as us how many licks we played, he won't ask us how many chords we practiced. He will evaluate us based on whether we were faithful to use his gifts for his glory.

KC, I was wondering if you could speak to the "importance" of keyboard players understanding how to keep all your chords in the (sweet spot) middle, using (two-handed) rootless chords, especially when playing with a Bass player; by continually inverting chords to KEEP you in the "sweet spot. Thanks for all of your teaching!

100! You're hilarious, bold, and right. I've played in CCM, multicultural, and gospel churches, and this has been my experience, too. Of course, there are other differences, such as in rhythmic patterns or how the music is improvised vs. orchestrated. After making a Hammond shout, it can be hard to play pads in CCM because it feels like I'm not doing anything, but I'm learning that there are a lot of nuances in pad techniques to build tension. It's all good if we remember our purpose and play for the right reasons.

I was into gospel music but I found that we musicians we deviate from ushering people into the presence of God to showing off our skills, especially when we’re aware that other fellow musicians are in the audience. I started getting worried, every Sunday, people will compliment how I play and they’ll tell me how dark were my chords but yet the same people can’t remember the message that was preached

But God always ask for excellence in worship specially when we offer our sacrifices, is simple good for God? Aren't we should be giving our best in worship, so, what if musicians throw everything in his arsenal to worship God, we are not to Judge if he's doing it for self glorification or for God's glory, but even singers overplay(do a lot of adlib) isn't this self glorification or very deep into worship? Only God can tell what's really in our hearts. In the book of psalms, multiple times it was mentioned to worship God Majestically, skillfully, extravagant, with joyful noise to exalt his name, and simple music it seems, is not enough. Or maybe (CCM style) is just a defense mechanism of most musicians in churches who fails to play skillfully. Because if its that so, then we are just like Cain, offering something from our harvest, but not giving our best.

The Production , The MD & the committment to excellence!!. Its 2 schools of thought happening 1 is the commitment to making the Music Great for God the other school is saying if we just sing and Pray together the music can be simple or occassionally somewhat sloppy & God will Bless it & Us.. 😂😂😂. The World needs both though...

CCM does a great job in keeping it simple and the focus stays on the worship. I love gospel but it is (imo) harder to pull off. I’ve gone to smaller churches where the keys, bass, drummers are all over the place. Sounds like each players is having a solo the whole song. But when done properly, it is amazing. I 100% prefer gospel when done right

Very well put. Remember though, that CCM is broader than the modern Hill Songs type stuff we here. Take a listen to the earlier Michael W Smith albums, Michael English self titled album, Steven Curtis Chapman Great Adventure album, Bob Carlisle.... And you will hear a whole different type of CCM, with lots of chords and nuances. So to me, CCM has evolved over time, and there is still a CCM out there that have some really cool chords.

CCM is another way to praise our God. When I came to my present church it was culture shock. I was not familiar with CCM but I’ve learned to appreciate it. Gospel is totally different. What I’ve learned in the past few years is that while as a musician Gospel is more fun , all too often the message of the song gets lost for many congregants. It can become a Show and less a service. CCM can be cookie cutter and lose folks in the sound alike songs. Ideally our mission as musicians is to point folks to God, not to musicianship of riffs and screaming guitars. Less show , more Jesus . Regardless of the musical leaning.

i've grown up with a good mix of both but I must admit it is easier to forget the purpose and focus of worship with traditional gospel than with CCM. I have seen this happen in both genres though. It is still completely possible with CCM, because often people confuse emotionalism i.e. people lifting their hands / crying in CCM with true worship, but the musicians can often be very distracting in gospel.

I prefer CCM. Keyboard-wise, It’s about textures and space. Lyrics and a pure connecting experience with God is paramount with praise & worship and the music should not be distracting from that, but supportive. Gospel music sometimes tends to get over-the-top with screaming divas and/or showboating musicians 😅 but that’s just my opinion.

CCM sounds like it mainly uses Guitarist who rely on First-Position "Open" chords. The legacy of Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan predominate (Guthrie said "Anyone who plays more than Two Chords is just showing off!"). I have occasionally played fill-in gigs at Black churches though I'm mainly a Jazz organist (originally influenced by Theater Organists). I have work with Blues and R&B singers and my "Back Door" experience in gospel.

Hey KC. This was cool stuff. IMHO it really has to do with what you are raised on both as a musician and a listener. If all I ever heard or played was straight majors and minors with zero passing tones and the same or similar pop/rock progressions, you might say that is what has been baked into me, hence, allowing me to focus on the worship and lifting up Jesus, but in the same token, if I have been only exposed to Gospel music from the age of 2, hearing passing tones, polychords and pentatonics everywhere might really be just as familiar to me to the point that I perceive it as simple, as it is the only thing I have ever known which yields the same results, where I am focused on God and the music, even at that level of playing still takes a second seat to the Worship. So it really is what you are exposed to the most, musician or non-musician. Musicians and listeners on the Gospel side have to really slow things down with CCM with their ears and with their hands, as CCM is a very stripped down version of what they are used to musically, like a car without all the bells and whistles, but that car will still get you where you need to go, so it is equally effective in terms of the Worship experience from start to finish. At the same time, I think the people from the CCM side might be inclined to think there is a lot of flesh in Gospel music, because it is so challenging and sometimes impossible for them to truly grasp and technically master, as they simply don't know it and were not raised on it, so they immediately will judge it as a display of technique, but I know plenty of guys who can play over a bunch of changes and rhythmic variations almost effortlessly, and they as well as their congregation, are just as laser focused on God in the worship experience. Why? Because it is also baked into them, they practiced to the point where it is no longer technical, but a part of who they are. Don't get me wrong, there are some pseudo divas and showboaters out there, but that is not necessarily tied to their technical ability as it is with their heart. It exists on both sides where you got the Cory Henry/Jason White wannabes on the Gospel side since it is largely keyboard driven, but you also can have an Eddie Van Halen/Steve Vai wannabe on the the CCM side since it is often guitar driven. All of it still goes back to the heart of the person, Bro!

yeah I agree with you - i've grown up with a good mix of both but I must admit it is easier to forget the purpose and focus of worship with traditional gospel than with CCM. I have seen this happen in both genres though. It is still completely possible with CCM, because often people confuse emotionalism i.e. people lifting their hands / crying in CCM with true worship, but the musicians can often be very distracting in gospel.

Jus seeing the title. CCM is like the song Perfect By Ed Sheeran. And gospel is like any BEBOP song.

CCM-Pop-Gospel is where it's at for me! I think I'll disagree with you a little on the instruments side. Modern CCM leans heavily on syth keys work and keys programming
