Julian of Norwich is admired by theologians, feminists, historians, and everyone in between. She's a figure that's hard to pin down and whose influence can be seen from bumper stickers to Ph.D. dissertations. In this interview, Veronica Mary Rolf explains how Julian is both the most and least well-known Medieval woman. In doing so, she brings the theology and life of Julian of Norwich alive, revealing her to be much more than her famous saying (which isn't even really her's) "all shall be well." In this interview, we explore several of Julian's mystical revelations which cover topics from the trinity to the motherhood of Jesus.

About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a KZfaq channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 22 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

Julian of Norwich played a big part in the most trying time of my life. When my wife was pregnant with our second child, a few weeks before her birth, we received a terrible diagnosis: ultrasound revealed the baby's brain was likely severely damaged. A routine 35-week checkup turned into a two-hour discussion with the doctor about "options," what to expect, etc.

When I was in the midst of one of the most cruel and destructive bouts of depression I have ever survived, my sister sent me Julian of Norwich’s quote “All shall be well, all shall be well and you shall see with thine own eye that all manner of thing shall be well.”

Reading St Julians works before I got stage 4 Non Hodgkin lymphoma was an absolute gift! I felt led to read her. She taught me how to suffer-& that it will be well-what was my biggest fear (cancer & death) and now it has become one my greatest pilgrimages in life. Thank you St Julian! 🕊🙏🦋

This was great! St. Julians mystical understanding of Christ cuts through church boundaries and hierarchies. It really puts in perspective how silly sometimes Christian traditions (Protestants, Catholics, Orthos) can argue incessantly over anything with each other while we forget the shared mystical unity in Christ we all have that believe and trust in Him and his faithfulness.

First time here. Love this woman, lovely and very very smart. That handsome dude host has a great personality, perfect for this type of channel. He allows the guest to speak at length without interrupting and without focusing on himself as do so many you tube hosts. His comments are brief and thoughtful, and quickly refocused on the guest.

Thanks for this superb interview, it has been delightful. I would really appreciate that you also interview specialists on other towering female mystic saints such as Saint Hildegard von Bingen, Saint Theresa of Ávila or Saint Catherine of Siena. May Our Lord bless you and Our Lady intercede for you always.

A friend sent me here today and told me how great the podcast was about Julian. WOW, I could not have been more delighted! Veronica was a fascinating, knowledgeable and incredible guest who just lit me up about Julian. Thank you! I'll be back to start listening to other video once I get over the re-watching of this one. I did not want this video to end AND felt like it was a deep beautiful breath for my soul.

Austin, if you love the mystics then I highly highly recommend the book Fire Within by Fr. Thomas Dubay. It's a very readable breakdown of the Western mystical tradition and it's only $12 on Amazon. It's hard to put down in the beginning because there's so much incredible information. The good news is we're all called to be mystics! Even you and me. I hope you can check it out, it's a great read.

Loved this! Would you be able to get someone on to talk about St. Hildegard von Bingen? She was a medieval mystic and composed the most angelic sounding chants, oh and she's also a Doctor of the Church.

Thank you so much! It's been a bit of a wild season for me and this blessed me immensely. Looking forward to the series! :) I'm Protestant but I've grown to appreciate the tradition, thinkers, and mystics of Christianity in a manner that has deepened my own walk in faith. Hope you cover Theresa of Avila and Hildegard Van Bigen too! Continued blessings on your amazing channel.

I read Revelations of Divine Love on a backpacking trip at Big Bend in 2018. Being exhausted in such a dry & hot place really added to the experience of feeling what Julian of Norwich felt to some extent on a micro level!

Thank you for a great interview! Julian of Norwich's revelations have challenged me over the years to think about the truths she expounds. Her revelations took her decades of dedicated contemplation, attention, prayerful questioning and searching, to begin to understand the mysteries that God was sharing with her. Thank you Veronica for sharing your depth of knowledge and understanding of Julian of Norwich and for helping us to journey more meaningfully with her in our search for a deeper relationship with God.

Was heading to Amazon to purchase Veronica’s book, but having just listened to Veronica’s piece on sin and God’s justice, saying that God doesn’t even see our sin, but rather sees the suffering child (the sinner). She is preaching like she never read the Bible. Christ uses the word ‘hell’ more than anyone else in the Bible. Yes, Jesus loves the sinner: He leaves the 99 sheep to go find the 1 lost sheep, and he runs to the prodigal son without mentioning his sin, but He also cautions his listeners about the narrow gate and the wide gate; few take the narrow gate that leads to life and many the wide gate that leads to perdition. Veronica, Jesus is merciful. He also insists that the sinner ask for forgiveness and struggle to avoid sin. He said, “If you love Me, keep my commandments” and “ Be ye perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” St. Paul states that “Eye has not seen nor ear heard what God has prepared for THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.” Veronica, you seem like a wonderful woman, but I believe you are setting a very low spiritual bar for other Christians, so low that some may even put their salvation at risk. God bless you Veronica and may the Holy Spirit guide you.

All shall be well. Edit- I had to laugh when I heard her frustration at that quote being taken out of context😄. I posted it when I was waiting for the video. Editing now! My mother and sister read “showings” when I was a teen. They loved Julian. My sister later became a contemplative herself (Carmelite) and she reached so many as a contemplative. I think that might be more common than thought. As I listened to this I was reminded of the Divine Mercy devotion, as it all ties in (and is so similar- I’m talking about St Faustina who was relatively recent. Of course it all ties in with the Gospel.

Beautiful and inspiring interview! What a great choice of guest to bring Julian's revelations to life for a contemporary audience. Veronica's passion for Julian came through so clearly. I would love to explore Julian's mystical theology more deeply and personally - her powerful visions of Christ's overflowing love are a gift for the soul in these unsettling times.
