If they made a cheap plastic injection molded sheath it would be a Gerber Strongarm competitor,n at only $30 U.S its a cool looking project knife. I bought the Ontario SP5 and supposedly its now 1075 and IMO its great steel. The heat treatment is excellent after my testing on nasty seasoned plum tree wood it passed with no issues. Our wild plum wood here in Oregon reminds me of that crap you guys have down there, its like it turns into glass with age very grainy nasty stuff.

Very good observation. I just bought the same knife a month ago and very happy with it. I wrapped the handle with 4 mm jute rope, flatten the spine a little more and it's now my favorite knife, more than my RAT5. Cheers!

Ontario SP5 is $45.00 on Amazon right now( US. sorry Pete) . The Absolute Best Survival knife under $50 ,imo, it has a 1/4 in thick , 9in long , FFG 1095 steel blade , bowie clip point , sharpened swedge( I dulled mine) , kraton handle, a good US made sheath, weighs 15oz , came with a good sharp edge , it slices and chops , I've had mine for 4yrs now and beat the piss out of it ever time I use it. I have knives that cost 2-4 times the money , but when it comes to hard core beating , that I wouldn't use or trust my other knives for , I grab the SP5 . All I ever did to the knife was mod the handle because it rubbed my pinky on my XL hands , that's it , l love mine , it's unbeatable for $50 , just ask The Preppers Bunker if you don't believe me .

Well, in all fairness, we all started out somewhere. That somewhere is usually at the entry level. If you are just camping or hunting, you do not need a heavy use knife. If you're thinking " survival knife" , I'd say to you that a great survivalist knows to be prepared enough that a mere tough situation doesn't unravel into a true survival situation. With that said generations survived on Green River - Old Hickory grade carbon " butcher " knives
@tombrown8800
@tombrown8800 4 жыл бұрын
Great review/comparison , the poor quality knife was made to look like a traditional hunting knife but w/o good materials, fit & finish ( made to sell not use ). The Ontario was made for use not looks. Budget knife that will get the job done. Liked your critique of the scabbard . Often this is where many manufacturers save money when offering a good blade. BTW no negativity here but what we call railroad ties in the US are approximately 6 inch x 6 inch , no criticism just information . Love what you do , excellent vids .

Hey Pete. You keep saying 17° edge is too thin for a survival knife, and I personally would disagree. I put a 17° Edge on most of my knives from folders to fixed blades and I never had any rolling or chipping because of it, maybe I am just lucky. Ofcourse I wouldn`t but an edge like that on a big choppa like my Tops Tahoma or something, but in my more companion sized knives like the SRK or the Tops Tom Brown Mini Tracker I find that the increase in cutting performance validates having that more "fragile" 17° edge. I never had an issue while batoning, and those knives aren`t really for chopping (except crafting chops). On my big knives I usually go for 20°, at most 23°, edges which isn`t that much thicker. Then again you are famous for destroying knives (or the wood that you use is) so maybe you should go for thicker edges :P

I live in America and am very much into both guns and knives and yeah I pretty much a rule to never buy a knife from a gun company. There are some exceptions or at least some better than others. Ruger collaborated with CRKT so they're not garbage for the money. Some Browning knives are ok for the money (I wouldn't say better than ok though). Winchester and Remington knives are pretty much crap. Even Gerber's crap knives (the Chinesium ones) are far better. For the money any Cold Steel, Mora, Buck, Ontario, etc are going to be a far better investment.

Don't worry. We gun owners here in America full well know that Winchester knives are junk. They get sold often around Christmas at places like Walmart for $19.95. After Christmas, half that on closeout. They put them in tins so that unsuspecting wives will give them to their outdoorsmen husbands as presents. Or sonthaybteenage boys can take them home and make KZfaq videos of them breaking while being thrown at barn doors lol.

I’m another one of those people who’s into both guns and knives. Winchester makes such beautiful guns, but man, that knife is horrible. You hit the nail on the head that most folks who hunt or shoot really have no clue about knives. My thought is, I use a knife way more often than I shoot, so why wouldn’t I spend maybe a little extra money to get something that’s an objectively better tool?
