Got a Champion Splitter? Watch Out For This Problem

My Champion 27-ton log splitter has served me well splitting over 5 cords of wood, but it has a couple problems. It had developed a leak previously that was easily fixed by tightening a hose clamp. While operating it, the hose popped off from the same spot, causing hydraulic fluid to shoot out all over the place. Don't forget to subscribe and join us on Facebook, too / flatcreekoutdoors

From page 7 of the Use and Care Manual for the Champion 27 Ton splitter, under OPERATION: 2. Be sure to confirm all hose connections and hose clamps are tight BEFORE EACH USE (emphasis added). It is possible for connections to vibrate loose over time.

Quite literally why maintenance crews used safety wire on EVERY hydraulic connection on aircraft, as when those break free, pilots can lose control of the aircraft. It would be nice to have a safety wire hole in the nut with an attachment point.

You might want to get a high pressure hose made with threaded ends so that won’t happen again. Should be easy to do. They just use that low pressure return hose as a cost savings. You sure treated that wood, I’d charge extra for that pile. 😂

Back in the 70s I worked in a hard rock mine and and we had a lot of air powder equipment and when ever we put a air line on we used a small cable whip check so if for some reason the line would come apart it wouldn’t be flying around bashing you or others. I’m sure you could find some whip checks at the hardware or maybe Amazon.

@vitomountainman6462

I did not read through the comments so I don’t know if someone else has suggested this but there are hose clamps that have a hole drilled through the nut head that tightens them so that you can safety wire the clamp to keep them from coming loose. If a clamp with the hole can’t be found one can always drill a hole in one. Of course the hoses should always be inspected and changed out within regular maintenance schedules but this will absolutely keep a clamp from coming loose. Just my two cents hope this can help.

Log splitters should have compression type hydraulic hoses on them, NOT worm gear clamps on the high pressure side. This type set up is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

That hose should not be fitted with a hose clamp. You are asking for trouble. The manufactureer of that log splitter should know better. That return hose should have proper hydraulic hose fittings that will never blow off.
