Buying a new bike is one of the most exciting things we can do as mountain bikers. There's no feeling that compares to bringing a bike home from your local bike shop or unboxing one. You'll probably want to get out and ride it as soon as possible, but be patient, there are a few things you'll need to do first. Neil Donoghue offers advice on how to set up and inspect your new bike before its maiden voyage.

@@gmbn It was really easy. All I did to the bare Aluminium Frame was. 1: I RUBBED the bare Aluminium Frame with a SCOTCHBRITE PAD with WD-40 for 1 x HOUR. 2: Then I used AUTOSOL Metal Polish for another 1 x HOUR and PRESTO it was Finished in 2 HOURS. Then I painted the Forks RED... The bloody STICKER KIT for the Bike is $140.00 from America to Australia. So I printed my own MONGOOSE Fireball and RST Dirt Stickers for the Frame and Forks for $55. I bought a new PRINTER and Sticker Vinyl and now I can make other Stickers for the Bike as well.

@@janeblogs324 I lightly Sanded the GLOSS PAINT first... 5 Minute. And I used a CAUSTIC PAINT STRIPPER. 1: I Brushed it on in Sections and Waited for the Reaction. 2: Then I Applied more Paint Stripper to a SCOTCHBRGHT PAD and Rubbed onto the Paint as well. That was Very Effestive. After the FIRST PROCESS was finished then I WASHED the FRAME with Water and Dried it to see where I was at. 3: I REPEATED the Above STEPS again and 99% of the Paint was Removed. 4: I then RUBBED the FRAME hard with A SCOTCHBRITE PAD with lots of WD-40 and that removed the last of the PAINT and completely SMOOTHED the ALUMINIUM ready for the POLISH. 5: USING a MICRO FIBRE CLOTH and AUTOSOL Polish I RUBBED the FRAME fairly hard and FAST. And in a FEW SECONDS you can see the FRAME becoming a MIRROR FINISH. 6: AFTER each Section I used a NEW CLOTH to remove the BLACK POLISH.. I was expecting it to take WEEKS. But it was Finisehed in one Day and it looks ABSOLUTELY UNREAL.

Might be cable tubes inside the frame, if so not a lot you can do really other than pay a bike shop to try to fix it (they'll know how and if it's possible). Bottom bracket could also need some attention, tightening up perhaps. Also check the recommended torque and use a torque wrench.

After using a spray nozzle hosepipe (never a pressure washer) to wash a bike, use PTFE spray to expel water from the chain and gears, then clean/dry with a microfibre cloth (it will get oily, don't worry about it). Add chain lube after that. These days I just try to avoid the muddy puddles, then most of the time all I need to do when I get home is wipe some mud splatters off the frame with a damp cloth, job done.

Exactly what you would do if it was brand new. Re-grease, check every bolt and torque them to the manufacturers specs if you can

If it's not near brand new I'd do full service because obviously no one does it when they sell the bike.

Don't forget to bed in your brakes before your first proper ride.

The Canyon comes with a chain stay protector out of the box! You can buy aftermarket ones though.

2023 Co-op DRT 1.3. This is REI's house brand but seems to have pretty good components for the price point. Always wanted try out MTBing, did my first solo ride on a local trail to celebrate NYE, enjoyed every minute of it Reply

New bike, strip it down completely. Re-grease everything, Loctite everything else. Invisi or ride wrap the frame, then re-built it.

Pretty poor indictment of manufacturers and retailers. For pre-owned bikes, always give the bike a thorough checkover. That said, as a motorcyclist and a cyclist, I wouldn't throw my leg over two wheels without first checking everything.

Most bikes out of the box come without grease yes, I'd rather have that than a bike tech put way too much grease where it's not necessary, also buy a torque wrench and torque EVERYTHING down, don't trust the factory or bike shops, humans are humans ...
