Hi Barry, Brilliant video! I’m now the proud owner of this very Ukulele, I purchased it from SUS about 18 months ago and I’m absolutely thrilled with it, even more so now that I’ve realised it was owned by your good self at one stage! Keep up the great work, I really enjoy your content.

From the first few strums you could hear every note clearly and yet they harmonized perfectly, too. That is what I always imagined a great ukulele would sound like. Congrats!

A dream uke for me, saving up for a standard though it'll be awhile. I've returned to this review a lot mostly to just keep reminding myself what I'm saving up for. Music and Warhammer as hobbies make my wallet cry 😭

I inherited a Kamaka Soprano when my mom passed away in 2009. It was made in 1972 and she had it factory refurbished at some point before she passed. She lived near the factory so that was not a problem. It was beautiful, but I installed Gotoh planetary turners when I switched to Aquila strings. It now holds its tune much better and I love the sound of this instrument. Thanks for featuring this great brand.

Nice review Barry, in my humble opinion Kamaka is certainly one of the best, i bought a concert from them some time ago, ordered it directly from them and it is my favorite uke. They were a pleasure to deal with very nice people. Thanks for the review.

Thanks so much. Your reviews are phenomenal and honest. Truly one of the few who actually do reviews rather than showcasing (most are sellers so I suppose that makes sense for them). That said this review hits the gut a bit, cause just 3 short years ago this model was $3-400 cheaper. I can’t fond one less than $1045 🙃 Thanks again, the Internet needs more folks like you 💯

Glad to see that you are doing a review on a Kamaka...I would love to see a review on a tenor Kamaka. Great review!

I think that's unlikely for the reason it was so long to feature this one. It just doesn't stack up in any way for Kamaka to send one to me on loan and ship it back. Plus, they really dont need my blog to help them sell - they dont struggle. I was just in the market for a new soprano - dont have a wish for a new tenor at the moment

It’s not so much that they didn’t want to, rather that there was no way I could ask them (or they could justify) shipping one halfway around the world and back for a review. Kamaka have a heritage that they dont rely on reviews or need them. They are that good.

@@GotAUkulele I know this is getting old so you may not have this ukulele hanging around now-a-days. I've found Worth Brown Mediums sing on this ukulele. The Martin M600s (and the Worth Lights) are a bit thin for the shorter, lower tension standard (soprano) scale. The Worth Brown Ms really strike a nice balance between the traditional Hawaiian sound and playability of the black nylon spaghetti strings Kamaka uses, and the quality fluorocarbon strings we have access to here in the 21st Century.

B-e-a-utiful ! Am gonna start putting my foot down when purchasing a new ukulele. If am gonna pay $300. And up for any instrument and if it doesn't come with a hard shell case ... it's a no sale for me. I mean how difficult can it be for manufacturers to include one? If you go on Amazon or eBay you can find $23. Hard shell ukulele cases all day long from multiple suppliers.

But it must be remembered that many players will not require a case, they either have one or the uke's not going anywhere. Empty cases take up more space than the instrument does. It's always worth asking for a case instead of asking for a discount when purchasing any instrument - that's if you want one. I've yet to find any case that enhances the tone of any instrument = I consider their main purpose is to protect during transit.

Barry : just a curious thing have you ever come across any ukuleles that were finished inside , not sanded and polished ( which I think would be cool,but don't know how it would effect the sound ?). But saturated with something to seal the wood inside ? 🤔
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen some with stained insides and I believe Lichty gloss the insides. Not sure what the impact is but I would wager that it’s one of those topics people will debate endlessly!

I guess all this is valid for the standard soprano pineapple ? I'd be pleased to know what you think about it, if you had the opportunity to compare. I'm also curious about the finish : is it a sort of natural lacker or a polyurethane kind of stuff ? Maybe top secret ? Just curious, as I'm pretty sure I will invest in one soon. ^^
@GotAUkulele

Afraid I've never played the Kamaka pineapple. I hear enough good things about it though. If anything like every other pineapple - the change in tone will be in the increase mid range - caused by losing the waist (more top to vibrate). They built their business on the pineapple, so it's worth putting trust in!
@bernardinelermite1133

@@GotAUkulele I fully trust Kamaka's quality. The only question for me now is to figure out - without being able to hold/feel/hear the ukes personally - which one I am more likely to prefer. Your answer just confirms my wish to head for a pineapple ! Thank you so much !

I was fortunate to enough to buy one of these 2016 models in pineapple shape. Have you changed the strings on yours yet, and what do you think of the sound after? The Kamaka nylons are an odd choice for me. Part of me thinks ‘what do I know, they’ve been making these for over 100 years - they MUST know their sound’. But the other part of me thinks they are just horrid strings. Ah well - that’s strings for you. Totally subjective and why string debates, recommendations and arguments are utterly pointless!

I’ve never heard your uke, so couldn’t comment. What I would say is, having reviewed several hundred ukes and played many hundred more…I wouldn’t say this is a ‘best’ as sound is far too subjective. I think that’s why you don’t sense it doesn’t sound different to yours, and you wouldn’t be wrong if that is your take from it. Personally though I think there is more nuance and subtlety to the sound of this than a great many I have played. There are others that stand out more for me, but this is right up there.
