Late on this one busy baby sitting my newest grandson with my wife. Octopus solid mahogany looks really nice. I think the tie bar is a little harder than the slot bridge for a beginner to change the strings, but it works. Oh lol you just said the same thing.😂 I have gears on all mine but that was because they all came with them on sale. Ohana 35 for example. The price is good for all solid here in the states. I like the sound of this one as well. I would put on Martin 600’s but that’s just me. Thanks for another real nice review….DOC

not bad at all for approximately US $175. I agree re: the eared tuners, though the last ukulele I bought (Gretsch concert scale resonator) has them. I totally disagree with putting Ohana below it though. I have an SK-75 (soprano, solid mahogany body, solid spruce top) that’s a genuine honey and an SK-21 solid mahogany sopranino which barks like a big dog, especially if you tune it up a 4th to F tuning.

Thoughtfully assembled, right down to the left-handed knots on the tie bar (keeps the gathered string ends from snagging on one’s jumper).

Really a nice little soprano ! I tell everyone to check out your you tube before buying a ukulele!!!

Nice - I like that (and I hadn't realised that Octopus has a website with some quite useful accessories). Definitely wouldn't have guessed what it was from the pictures.

I really like the look of this one. The decorations are not too much and not too little. I'm grateful for the brands that have good ukuleles for a budget-friendly price. I have my Mahi Mahi mahogany soprano, thanks to your review, and I love the way it sounds. It is my favorite and I am proud to play it. I'm sure I would be happy owning this one as well. It's also nice that they make the concert and tenor in solid acacia. That would be interesting to hear too. 😃 🎵

A nice ukulele in the more traditional look. I agree that peg tuners would be better looking due to it's size.

I agree with almost all of your insights. I do differ with you when you critique a fretboard for having some variegated colors or praise one for its uniformity. We have to get over visually perfect wood. It's wood for heaven's sake. So much wood will be wasted in the quest for such. In this day and age we can no longer require this. Trees are a valuable and a disappearing resource due to our carelessness. Certainly it's not prudent nor respectful to leave visually imperfect logs rotting on the ground. Better to take the view of Bob Taylor, that is training our aesthetic view to appreciate the natural variegation in wood. IMHO wood with some color stripes can be truly beautiful. This being said, there is no excuse for a poorly dressed fretboard, no matter the visual quality of the wood.

This one, although nearly an entry level instrument, decidedly passed the Baz Sister Kate Shimmy test. That is the definitive uke test in my book; I use it frequently and with confidence! It's jangly hop reminds me (a bit) of my 1940s mahogany Martin. If we could check back on this Octopus in 80 years, I think we'd hear some great aged in mahogany warmth and vintage voice.

One thing I just do not understand is the cut-down tenor bridge on Chinese built instruments. It would not be beyond the wit of the designers to make the change to a Martin style bridge.
