Hi, thank you for your review. I also noticed that a lot of people seem to find a lot of wrong with baritones; in the best cases they called it a failed guitar. I'm just a beginner but I love the baritone exactly because of the way it sounds: dark, mellow, warm: not an Hawaian sound for sure, but beautiful. I like it so much more than "normal" ukes, even tenors.

Baz!!! I am so excited. I have just bagged one of these. Mine has black headstock. The body seems a bit darker but it's a photo so may not be. Used but in mint condition for £175. They are currently selling them brand new at SUS for £540 including VAT.

Superbly detailed and objective review. I have the same uke bought from the same supplier (Southern Ukulele Store) but fitted with a different pickup system. Yours, as you explain, is a Fishman under-saddle strip, mine uses two separate transducers fitted on the underside of the bridge position. The case that the Pono came in via SUS is really excellent. I would REALLY have liked to hear your MB-E played using the pickup as well as acoustically. I think the system I have has a fairly low an output but it would have been useful to make a comparison. I agree with every single comment you make about quality, tone, sustain etc. ... and let's face it, the words 'sustain' and 'ukulele' don't usually go together all that well. I would however, veer more towards a 'C' profile when describing the neck rather than a 'D'. Playing, as I do, with 70 year-old hands and fingers, the neck width at the nut is JUST OK, but I am now finding it just a tad narrow at times. Nothing worrying - but when compared to my cheap (but eminently playable) Brunswick ukulele which has a constant width neck, the Brunswick just wins by points on comfort. (Update - I've now reversed that opinion and am finding the narrowing of the neck to be extremely comfortable. I hope to sell the Brunswick in 2016 and buy a 2nd Pono or similar). The tone created by the blend of Mahogany and matt/silk finish is much less 'toppy' and subtle than usual and is a sound that I really like. I'd like to hear a baritone made with cedarwood as the Admira classical that I have has a solid, satin-finished cedar top and Brazilian Mukali back and sides with a neck made from African mahogany and the tone is similarly well balanced without overtones that are overly edgy. I can only agree that the Pono MB is a fabulous instrument. My own demo and review is very different to yours, but also tries to show the quality of the instrument. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zqpmaa6o0q69YoE.html All the best.

***** Thanks Alan - the pickup in mine is fairly low output too - but like yours, being passive - they really benefit from running them through an EQ pre-amp pedal (I use an LR Baggs). I played it yesterday on stage for the first time through a big rig and it sounded nice to my ears!

***** I don't have a dedicated pre-amp but on the other hand I don't gig. When I want to play electro I either plug straight into my Stagg acoustic amp or I used a Zoom FX unit (clean setting) as a sort of alternative pre-amp. Sometime in the near future, I hope to try a few at-home recordings using the Zoom but with some of the more subtle effects I've programmed for it such as light reverb, phasing etc. If anything seems worth uploading, I'll do so. Hope to hear and see more of you playing baritone ukes - or any ukes, come to that. I've subscribed and will soon find time to browse your channel. Regards.

***** To be honest - gigging or not, they are nice things to have . Some pickups can sound a bit artificial, and the EQ part of them is great to cut out some of the quackier sounds they can create.

***** Not having the money for an LR Baggs, I've just bought a basic Artec acousticSE-OE3 pre-amp. First tests look excellent when I plug direct into my Stagg acoustic amp and even more interesting when I pass the signal through my favourite Zoom FX box. I won't have the same level of control as you with your LRB, but the Artec looks fine for what I need. In a few months I know I'm due to have a week all to myself here at home so I can get out all my gear, spread it over the floor and get down to making a 2nd demo of the Pono which I'll now be able to demo with its acotsic sound + it electro sound + a few subtle effects. So thanks for the tip. I'm very grateful - you were absolutely right.

I've heard several people comment on changing the strings of the baritone ukes. No one says changed to what. Are Uke strings all nylon? Since the baritone is bigger with a longer neck than the other ukes does it require longer strings specifically made for baritones?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 6 жыл бұрын
Same applies to all ukuleles. You can change to different materials (Nylon or Fluorocarbon or Nylgut) and you can also change the gauges meaning you change the tension slightly. With Baritones you can also get specific strings that are gauged for retuning to standard GCEA tuning. I dont know where the attraction is I think that destroys the point of a baritone, but each to their own. Whatever change you make you need to choose strings specifically designed for baritones and labelled as such. Not least, they are the only ones that will be long enough!!

I like the sound of baritone, very full and rich...Pono is maybe the best brand for the middle price range about baritone ukulele. There is Kala also...but i think that Pono is one step over.

Pono cannot be wrong. Kala solid spruce top baritone suits me for a budget for $259 Sdg. Likely I am getting a kala solid spruce baritone.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the lead pops out of the socket on my Pono. Strings - Worth Flourocarbons make this uke sound 10 times better. It's expensive, but good. My favourite gig uke.

Depends on the jack socket used - this was retro converted to electro by the store. Mine had a pretty standard jack socket

I to am not fond of the wound strings to, it would have been nice to see a split video where you changed the strings and gave it a more mellowed tone , I also think that the quality of pono's instruments are very good they sometimes are over built and are heavy which also makes them play a bit brighter needless to say beautiful uke' ,can you do a follow up with different strings , 👍🏼

I am getting a Aloha soprano ukulele it's Basswood is that a good beginning ukulele?
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 9 жыл бұрын
Juan Peralta Sorry, don't know the brand. Anything billed as 'basswood' tends to be a cheap ukulele. Basswood is a cheap hardwood and not really considered a quality tone wood. It also gets used by instruments that are just plywood.

Juan Peralta If you haven't already bought anything, I STRONGLY suggest you contact Southern Ukulele Store. They're exceptionally helpful and gave me masses of advice via email before I bought my Pono ukulele from them. They will give you all the advice you need and the SUS website is fantastic for searching to find something you might want within your budget. From his comments, Gotaukulele also bought from SUS. Just use the 'Contact' link on the SUS website. www.southernukulelestore.co.uk/

For good purchases, I agree with Alan - Southern Ukulele are a great store - as are Omega Music in the UK.

***** Agreed. In fact, when starting the process which eventually ended up with me buying the Pono. I first contacted Matt at Omega. They didn't have the uke in stock but were good enough to put me in touch with Southern Ukulele Store. The folks at Omega (lead by Matt) have just started producing a high quality, monthly magazine called 'Uke'. So far there have been 2 issues. www.omegamusic.co.uk/ Whereas SUS specialise in ukuleles, Omega also stock a very wide range of other instruments.
