I live by the Quabbin Reservoir is the largest inland body of water in Massachusetts, and was built between 1930 and 1939. Along with the Wachusett Reservoir, it is the primary water supply for Boston, 65 miles to the east, and 40 other cities and towns in Greater Boston. 39 sq miles of woodland and water shed. Wildlife galore, Moose, bear, turkey, etc. Western Ma far different than Boston area. Best wishes to all…!!!

Creosote is great for sealing logs. My dad built a baseball backstop back in the seventies. He got an old milk can and filled it with creosote. He used cedar poles which he soaked the ends in. When we pulled the posts twenty some years later there was no deterioration on the post bottoms at all. Utilities use it on their poles. Gotta work very well.

And creosote was used for railroad ties. My granddad was a carpenter on the B & O RR and was commonly covered in creosote. He used it a lot on the farm too.

Mike, in my area here in western Colorado, I built a pole barn, 40 x 64, 22 years ago and only used raw gravel at the base of the poles. I did pour 1 foot of concrete for them to set on, but I did not use any concrete or dry mix. The poles are 4 feet in the ground and the gravel poured tightly around each one keeps them tight and the water is not held close around them. I have had no issues with any rot whatsoever!

Hello! 😊 The Ames Shovel Company originated in 1774 and products are sold even today. They were hired by the US government to supply shovels for the soldiers on the ground and also made sabers for them. Thus the trademark on this saber. After doing some research, I found out that the Ames Shovel Company did not make sabers for the government but the Ames Manufacturing Company did. They were two separate companies. Sorry for the misinformation.

Pressure treated lumber commonly sold to the public is clearly rated "Not for ground contact". There is "For ground contact" pressure treated, but my local hardware store didn't know what I was talking about when I asked for it. Concrete piers 6" out of the ground with an anchor bolt in it will last forever and are super cheap.

First time I saw a turkey was when I was about maybe 19, driving the backroads. I stopped the car and got out, and it started running, so I ran behind it. and it ducked under a barbed wire fence and flew off. I was surprised, I didn't know they could fly :) Now they are everywhere. And, we had a lot of partridge, but you don't see them very often anymore. We used to have pheasants, but I think that was mostly because we had pheasant farms and some would escape.

I would recommend railroad ties New ones from the railroad for the posts you put in the ground. The wood always rotes at ground level, The other thing you can do is when filling the hole with concrete keep the concrete thick and bring it up higher than the ground and angle the top for good water run off.

I've been on several different zero turn mowers. My dad bought the mower you have. We live in north central Ky. I can mow everything dad does. However, he does it much easier and faster than me. It never slips or slides on a bank. I do think on a perfectly flat yard, a zero turn will turn faster. However, on slopes, hard to beat the front wheels being controlled. Instead of them being just casters.

I think coating posts with "tar" should work. I used a latex/tar roof sealer on the posts when I built my chicken coop. Six years on and it's holding up great, no signs of rot at ground level. I've also heard that you can drill a couple of holes in a post just above ground level, then fill the holes with a mix of used motor oil and diesel. Refresh the oil mixture every six months to a year.

They had a beautiful piece of land that was donated to the state it is now known as Borderland State Park. I believe it's on line so you can check it out . When we were kids we used to go in there and go swimming the place was amazing and the history of the Ames family is vey interesting. Mower comparisons: my zero turn is great, But, it can get stuck pretty easily. When one wheel spins, the other will turn you in a circle. Almost makes a hole deeper under the spinning wheel. The caster up front turns towards the twist. With the stearable front wheels, I think it would resist the turn some cause the rear wheel with drive would have to drag the front wheel sideways instead of castering around. Interesting to think about. We don't have enough slope to rest the problem with that. Good luck...thanks for the videos.
