That architecture you commented on is typical for the east coast (white clapboard with a covered porch, gable roof). You see it everywhere in rural areas. It was cheap and fast to build. The town you were in looked like a company town since many of the houses were identical. Mining companies (e.g., coal) or manufacturers and railroads built them for their workers and companies deducted the rent from their paychecks. Companies also often set up company stores and overcharged for basic necessities since they owned the only store in town. The store became a profit center along with the mine and the workers typically saved nothing or were even in perpetual debt to their employer. Eventually unionization and declining commodity prices put an end to these exploitative practices but the legacy lives on in Appalachia, still one of the poorest and unhealthiest regions in America.

Cass is a lumber and railroad town. Still a "company" town. Coal ran the mill and train engines but it came from elsewhere.

I enjoyed your Highland Scenic video. As a native West Virginian, I can say the houses and architecture are typical of WV and western Virginia. Thst is because most of the houses were built and owned by the operators of mining, logging and railroad companies. The companies would rent the houses to their employees. Thank you for your positive review of our beautiful state.

My sister lived in War WV. We went to visit and my teenagers were pointing phones in every direction looking for a signal. My sister literally lived in a holler and got about 6 hours of daylight a day, lol. I was born and raised in West Virginia. Its the most beautiful and misunderstood state in the United States.

Rt 150 is pretty great. There is a back road from Marlinton to Cass(the little company town you went through) that is just awesome. You should have stopped in Cass and checked out the scenic railroad. It is living history. I really enjoyed this episode as I have ridden all these roads before. Great video!

I have to admit I had no big clue about the area at all - Brett recommended to take 150 on my way to Green Bank and that was all. So yes, I completely missed out on the railway and quite some other sights I meanwhile know more about. 😅

A geologic oddity. No water runs into Pocahontas County on the surface of the ground, but eight rivers originate in the county and flow out of it. It’s truly a rider’s paradise with the mountain roads, low population density and scenic views! For dual sport riders, there are literally hundreds of miles of National Forest Service open roads plus many more gravel county roads.

It’s not just Green Bank that does not have cell phone coverage. The only two areas of the county that have coverage is Marlinton, the county seat and at the top of the mountain at Snowshoe. We live a few miles from the Cranberry Glades. My wife and I used to hike this area a lot. I need to get back into it. The closed road where you turned is an area a lot of hikers and mountain bikers use. There's a lot of camping and fishing along the Cranberry through there. This road comes out back near Richwood, the town your video started in.

Yes it’s actually a tragedy that West Virginias past in some parts is not exactly rosy - and still I guess there are a lot of problems to be fixed. But at the same time it definitely is a very underrated state when it comes to traveling and to its nature - and to me everyone I met was so friendly and welcoming. It was really one of my favorite states of this whole trip and I hope to be back in the future to see more things that I missed out on this trip…

So many were basically slaves and treated that way. Greedy company owners got richer, low wages, company store, company doctor, company houses. They even made their own laws in their towns to keep total control of the workers. Excellent video editing and music choice too.

I am so very happy you had a great time in my home state of West Virginia. I was born and raised in these mountains. They are in my blood & I love them.. I am so happy you had a fun, safe ride here. The remoteness is too much for some people. That is one of my favorite things about the mountain state.!!! The scenery is never ending. Overall, the people are great, friendly, giving, and kind. Mountain people. If they like you they will do anything for you. If they do not like you, stay away from them. As a rule people up here do not like authority and are suspicious of outsiders and are sometimes clannish. But for the most part most of them are decent. We do have a few bad apples, a few! Most everyone in the community knows who that is. We tend to address our issues ourselves when able........ Please come back again, please. Take care and ride safe.... You may want to contact 1-800-CALLWVA for more information and resources.... May I suggest you ride up to Tucker County WV. Tucker is up near where WV and Maryland meet. It is also where the Potomac River begins This area is uber - remote.. Some tourism, a little. A lot of hiking trails and scenic areas, quite beautiful.... Check it out!!....... Ride safe and defensive!

I so enjoy your video and the music is great.... I hope you enjoyed the glades. There are several places in West Virginia that are unique. Suck as the bogs/ glade. Another is Dolly Sods. The plants and animals in the sods are native to Canada. Be careful in there. The U.S. Military trained there for WWII. There is reports of unexploded ordnance left over there. I have never found any there, but that does not mean anything. I think the signs may be a CYA type thing.... When I lived in this region, I heard of people going there and getting lost. The radio telescope is the largest steerable/moveable device of its kind in the whole world!!! But, I must confess West Virginia is my home state and I love it very, very much. If you are ever in the Green Bank region again, go to Cass Scenic Railroad. The rolling stock there is from the 1800's and is amazing. The Shay locomotives are all-wheel drive, even the tenders. A very scenic place. They logged this area from the late 1800's until the 1960's. I read on quote that said the lumber that came from there built America..

The movies wrong turn and deliverance were not 100% fiction. There are hollers that branch off from hollers and houses you can't get within a quarter mile of while still in a car. Some hollers have many varied broken down cars with multi state plates. Even the locals don't go certain places and some places cops won't go.

I was born and raised on McDowell County in West Vs. My dad raised 18 children there. 13 of his own and 5bof his brothers after his death. I loved it then and I still love the mountains of Wva. TMH YAHUAH says his spirit dwells in the mountains. I left 45 years ago but came back home and retired here. It's the safest place on the country.

You went right by Snowshoe and the white houses is Cass. My friend and I ride in that area all the time and there is a bunch of dirt roads that go on for ever into the real back Country routes. If you ever make it back this way I would gladly take you on a dirt road tour and have room and board at Snowshoe resort
