Thanks for the review! Coincidentally, a day after viewing this video, I happened upon a Zuma in limited-edition full-body painted "surf green" at closeout price. I picked it up even though it was even more quiet, almost muted, than you describe, because the sustain was insane. It vibrates like a resonator. Pluck a string and, true, you can barely hear the note in a non-silent room, but you can feel the body vibrating for 30 seconds. I figured that, at the barely $100 price, it might be a good platform to convert to an acoustic-electric with a Braggs 5.0 or an Anuenue Air Air pickup. First thing I did to it when I got it home was to restring it with a spare set of Aquila Nylgut strings I've had laying around for years (on account having lost the package that says what size the strings are; turns out they fit the concert scale just fine). The string change worked wonders; the uke now punches hard, although with a decided boxiness or even a hint of banjo-ness that gives it something of a vintage-y sound. Or like listening to music on an AM radio back in the day. Which makes me think that it really is nicely suited to use with a mic or combination mic-and-undersaddle pickup.

What i like about a fender headstock is all the tuners are on one side, easy to reach and all turn in the same direction. Plus the strings are lined up straight to the tuners.
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I hear that a lot and they are good enough reasons. However, Fender don’t own the concept (only the shape) - if it was so invaluable, why do 99% of instruments employ a side by side tuner arrangement? I’ve never personally had any issue with tuners moving in different directions myself
@angelocardoc
@angelocardoc 5 жыл бұрын
The Fender headstock is designed that way so your hand doesn't hit the tuning peg when playing certain cords. This headstock design has a straight string path from the nut to the tuning pegs which helps prevent string binding, which improves string resonance characteristics and keeps in tune longer. IMO its a superior design even though it looks out of place on a uke. Function over form.

Thanks for a very good review ❤ I have this one, and except from one thing, I'm very satisfied. The space between the first fret and the G-tuner is too short. A flatter neck would also be better. But I kind of like this cute uke anyway ❤ The price in Sweden (2021) is £ 100. Once again: You make the best vids on youtube. I wish you and your family a merry christmas. God bless ya 💕

For a $169 it's actually GREAT value. I've had plenty of $2-3k Martin Ukes and played a few of the fine ones from Hawaii like Kanilea, Pono, Romero, Rebel and so on, and this little Fender is a nicely balanced uke that'll make pretty much anyone happy. Some might even like that it's not harshly bright or overtoned...some folks think that sound is annoying actually. This one is warm and will let you do all kinds of styles on it with a balanced response. Great value.

@@akshaysharma2786 Very relative and all subjective. But my scoring matrix tries to take that into account. A cheap ukulele can do much better on the scores on 'value for money' than a 3 thousand dollar uke can. The 3k uke may beat it on 'sound' , but not always on value for money, and not always on looks either.

I kind of liked the idea of the 4-in-line tuners (for functionality), but it looks like it comes at a cost. I DON'T like the idea of the 12th-fret-join, and I'm thinking they did that to compensate for the added length of the headstock-to keep the overall length of the instrument consistent with other concert-sized ukuleles and accessories. (And the added length is probably one reason, in addition to tradition and aesthetics, that other manufacturers don't use this tuner arrangement.)
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 4 жыл бұрын
Yep - that's probably the reason - though weirdly I hear people struggle to make these fit in some standard concert cases as it is! I see a lot of people saying the inline tuners make sense, but always reply as follows. Kamaka have been making the worlds most revered ukuleles for over 100 years - they never felt the need to improve theirs with inline tuners.

You know what... I would actually be ok with the headstock IF Fender put that on everything. Ukuleles, guitars, bikes, cars, houses. lol. Because I would at least appreciate the stubbornness... but they don't! They don't! I have a lovely Fender acoustic guitar. Great value for very little money and... a normal (non-''Fender''), regular headstock. So what's the deal here. Do they put that headstock on their Ukuleles to try and sell more of them, making people feel they're cool and they're playing a Stratocaster? Yeah... I think I answered myself. But anyway, back to more important things... great review Baz! You always make our weekends better! Thank you!!!

I have this one and it's beautiful, can't find anything wrong except the little scratch I made myself. It's obviously not the best ukulele but the sound is surprisingly good for such a cheap instrument! my friends have a (ma)kala that was more expensive ($90 instead of the $52 I paid) and they are honestly jealous... I guess you have to be lucky with the one you get, cause yours indeed doesn't sound great...

Wow. Tried one in the store today and I thought it was dreadful. I’d have thought such a petite bridge like that would allow the top to resonate better, but it was terrible. Philip Vega-Ramirez, I now have both in hand, a red Zuma and the Grace VanderWaal Signature concert! I can honestly tell you, the sound quality is VERY different. As I said, the red Zuma has an almost banjo-like sound to it, whereas the Signature has a far more regular ukulele sound to it! It projects well - that said, it isn't as loud as some other ukes I have, but is more than loud enough! I took the red Zuma to a group last night with about 40 other people and it held it's own admirably in fairness to it! Several people commented on it, both for it's looks and for it sounding like a banjo! So if the Zuma could hold it's own, I am in no doubt at all that the Signature will too. It has a lovely, rounded sound to it which I really love. Fittings and finish are pretty much identical to the Zuma, although obviously, not red! The in built tuner works just fine too. I can't comment on it plugged in to an amp yet as I haven't tried it out, but I will! The ONLY thing I wish was done better, and I am being REALLY picky, is the finish around the inside of the soundhole. The sapele wood is stained to the walnut colour (which is stunning by the way) but just on the inner edges of the soundhole, it hasn't had sufficient stain applied to quite cover the original wood colour perfectly. I mean really, if you look at it from most angles, you would never notice - but for the sake of this review I went over it with a fine tooth comb! That is the only thing I can fault it on. The Zuma is obviously painted on top to candy apple red, but there are no such issues with the paint on that one, and the inner of the soundhole is perfect. I'm really glad I have both to be honest. I love the looks of the red one better, just because it is so stand out different, but the Signature does have better sound in my opinion. You also get the pick up installed, and the gig bag too, which is nice quality and looks smart. The Signature is a beautiful looking thing for those who like a natural wood look, and I think it's a really great deal for £159 (UK) Hope this helps? :)

I actually got this ukulele for Christmas! At first I cringed at the sound, it is really quite chimey and soprano-esque with a hint of banjo twang to it! I have to say though, the more I play it, the more I like it! Yes, it does suffer in the volume department, but I played it in a group with about 10 other people and it more than held it's own. I also run a local group with about 18 players and plan on taking it there too. The afore mentioned banjo like sound makes it stand out from the others for sure. I do wonder though, if a change of strings might help volume at all, and sound less banjo-ey? Has anybody tried changing the strings, and if so, what did you think?

I took this uke to a much larger group last night with about 40 other people playing, and it definitely (and admittedly, surprisingly) held it's own! Several people commented on it, both for its stunning looks and for it's banjo like sound! What probably surprised me most, was that people LOVED the sound of it! They loved that it didn't sound the same as every other uke in the room and had a presence all of it's own. They felt it added something extra to the band! It's an absolute keeper for me!

@MattyPeq
@MattyPeq 5 жыл бұрын
KAR I'm sorry, my friend, but I don't think that is true. Maybe that was the case before. Not now though. Fender acoustic guitars are not even worth mentioning when it comes to high end/professional level. But they're very good as far as beginners'/practice guitars go. The Fender CC-60S and the CD-60S are great. They always get high scores in reviews and are often mentioned among the best acoustic guitars for beginners, with the usual Yamaha's and others. And for personal experience: I own a Fender CC-60S. 150€, brand new. I'm not saying it's as good as my $3000 Martin, but it's damn good in its own right, especially for 150 euros. A great guitar to start learning. And Baz said that, albeit flawed, two out of the three Fender Ukuleles he reviewed were pretty good. If the Montecito got an overall score of 8.5 and the Zuma got 8.3... that means something. (Speaking of that: everybody, go read the written reviews!!!!) So, yeah, Fender acoustics are not always bad. :)
@GotAUkulele
@GotAUkulele 5 жыл бұрын
I'd agree - whilst I don't like Fender acoustics and they are not earth shattering, they have much improved. In fact I own a cheap one as a knockabout for play in the garden in summer months. The Montecito and Zuma did indeed do ok. The flaw with both is the volume - which would rule them both out for me. But if you only ever want to play in a bedroom for fun, they'd both be nice. You could never jam with them though, you'd be lost.
