This looks more like a conceptual difference than a "replacing artistic talent". All I see is a difference is the size of the waves, and that could be because it looks less stormy in GKs compared to AK.

There is also translucency in the water to catch the ambient light(Previous game). Also the waves seem more randomized. More natural. Gotham knights Water effects seem last last gen in comparison. Clearly Minimal effort put in. Wont be surprised if this was a ready made off-the-shelf texture effect, that the team just put in. Even a cursory look at the previous game would have told them this was sh*t. Dont think dev bothered to do that even

Arkham Knight WAS last gen and the water was so realistic I thought they were going to make Killer Croc pull me in at times if I still on the edge lol. Completely agree. Rocksteady must have had absolute masters of their crafts to do something like that with UE3. Granted that at launch, the game had it's issues, but 7 years later, it's a great game. In fact, even in UE4, making an open world game is nearly impossible. So I'm quite excited about the new Suicide Squad game being developed by Rocksteady. Lets see, how good UE5 will be for open world games.

GTA 5 had better water physics from 2013 I didn't notice any water splashing after it collides with a wall in both Arkham nights and Gotham Knights, whereas it does in GTA 5.

I get what you mean, and you're correct, but rather it shows that the technology to achieve this has been possible since 2014/UE3 days. It's just about the individual usage, the artistic and human effort put into using it to its best. That varies. RDR 2 came out in 2018 There are so many games that still stand out, being decades old. Mirror's Edge, Crysis 3 come to mind. Also Battlefield 4, 5. They all had something groundbreaking that other games of the time couldn't achieve. And Red Faction for it's physics. You are 100% correct, but technology isn't the right word. So just wanted to elaborate a bit on it

Yes, that’s why you can’t interact with it. It looks great because they didn’t have to put in extra effort in physics and such, only looks. I expected Gotham knights to allow you to swim, but it turns out you can’t. How did they screw this up? It looks worse and works the same. This is unacceptable.

The standard isn’t too high. The closest similar game released between the Batman series ( Spider-Man ps4) also looked and felt amazing. Gotham Knights looks way too rushed. Everything from the character models to the water looks worse than Arkham Knight.

The waves are exaggerated and stylized, just like the rest of Arkham environments.

I think this is very much a case of average vs above and beyond, the water in Gotham Knights looks good enough and behaves more realistically due mainly to technological advancements, while Arkham Knight goes hard on making the water look extra pleasing, and the unrealistic movement adds to the uneasy gloomy atmosphere as it looks as of a storm's always approaching, in Gotham Knights there is no discernable atmosphere so the water doesn't get any particular attention to drive some visual esthetic home, it only serves as part of the background, which is OK but that's why it looks so unimpressive compared to Arkham Knight, artistic direction will always beat pretty graphics, just compare the city of gotham between the 2 games, on a technical level Gotham knights is probably more advanced, but you don't care cause the art direction in Arkham does wonders to hide its flaws and generally looks more appealing despite being made on inferior hardware, no amount of RTX can make your game look beautiful if you don't have a strong art direction.

its an artistic choice for gotham, as its always raining, stormy and thundery it should be made that way as a sign to not come any closer to gotham because its chaotic.

Yeah and the moon is literally 10x the size it would be. It's good style and art direction

the arkham series' art style, as explained in one interview, was never to be "realistic", but rather, to have a "comic book feel" type exaggeration. in that, it has photo-real models, but was deliberately made to look "fantastical". just think about the helicopter scene in arkham city while everything was blowing up -- it was "photoreal", but it had that comic book intensity that was just mindblowing when you're in the moment (nice touch that the arkham city main theme plays over that scene)

Same, though I'd say games in 2005 had passion, you could see it and they were complete unlike so many modern games nowadays. I think that's the real issue.

Also, its literally the architecture of the 1930's (1890-1930), in the 80's comics they flipped inbetween block art deco towers in comics, and church relationed spires in the other.
