You're a fantastic teacher. Even if you never reach the GM title yourself, you've almost certainly inspired many future GMs, and possibly even a future world champ or two. Everyone's heard of men like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, etc., but not many people realize the sheer magnitude of the line of men who preceded them. Every world changing artist learns from someone, and I think there's honor enough in being part of that chain. Even if you're not the strongest link.

3:07 "the first thing that goes through my mind": quote: "You (Levy talking to himself) are GOING to find a way to MESS this up" ... that is a TYPICAL SELF-HYPNOSIS AND NLP combined! ... Levy is CONDITIONING his being in a self created mess due to HOW he talks about himself negatively on almost all levels, thinking he is "funny" that way ... Using sarcasm against himself on a daily basis IS A FORM OF CONDITIONING. If you do it often enough, you program yourself to experience the "confirmation bias loop" trap. Levy joked about seeing a sports psychologist, but if he really hasn’t seen one yet, it could be all he needs. Mental blocks are some of the most significant obstacles facing elite level athletes and there is very real , measurable ways to push pass them with simple routines. Something bad simple as mindfulness and breathing routines before a match can put some people completely at ease

Unfortunately that day won't come. Unless Gotham quits streaming or youtube he won't even have the time to practice, let alone the dedication to keep at it until he gets the norms. Also the incentive isn't big enough. He has to put his career on hold for AT LEAST a few months and study chess like a maniac just for two letters in front of his name and a bit of prestige? Not worth it. That's the reality and Levy knows it, he's expressed parts of what I said himself. No matter how many clickbaity titles and videos he makes about "Levy=GM", he knows he won't get that title, so at least he's using the situation for views.

@@agent0422 but deep down, we all know that Levy is capable of doing it. even Hikaru agree one thing that holding him back from becoming a GM is that Levy cannot hold his composure against someone higher rated than him. Levy's opening and mid game is already at GM level, but his end game and nerve is severely holding him back. I still wish that someday when he retired from streaming, he will try and pursue the title to prove to everyone that he can.

@@JFlatby I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend your sensibilities, by showing how uncultured I am when referencing a popular game with another popular game. You're right, only Americans care about the NFL. There's definitely not the statistics to prove that 15-20 different countries have NFL viewership in the millions. There's surely not semi-professional football leagues all around the world, and there is no possible way that another country (like, oh, I don't know, *Canada*), has a high-profile league of their own. Nothing in my comment suggests I'm an American, but just so we're clear, if you have to go online and defile the humanity of an entire country that has close to 350 million people in it, just because you don't agree with a comment you read, from a stranger, no less, in an ultimately fruitless attempt to feel better about your shortcomings, your respect is not on the list of things I need to get by in life, my friend.

I absolutely love this video. Not because of schadenfruede of Levy's loss, but because of the guts Levy displayed (and displays daily) by putting himself out there and showing that he is human, and struggles just like us. This video hits home for me, because I get super nervous playing real people even online. To see the struggle and know that even the best (which you are Levy) means so much. Thank you for sharing!

That last few words hit deep for me. I feel you man. I personally sometimes get over those barriers with a plan - a plan of inviting losses. If I go with the mindset that the default outcome is a loss but my ONLY objective, my personal win condition, is PURELY to learn, to play/do the best, or to keep nerves calm - even IF you play like shiz, or lose the game, that doesn't matter. You're solely focusing on one thing only (that being keeping your nerves in your case). If you can do that, no matter the outcome of the game, then you achieved victory. Keeping that kind of mindset has actually helped me feel good about my wins instead of just feeling relieved, and losses hurt much less. But this is a very personal barrier and everyone may have to figure it out on their own. I wish you success my dude!

Let's be realistic. Levy is quite a bit out of his prime. And in his prime, he wasn't an exceptional IM. He was a very regular 0 GM norm IM. Don't get me wrong, being an IM is extremely, extremely impressive, but Levy has never been close to GM. You think nerves can close a 200 elo gap? That's a gigantic elo gap for anyone and nearly unprecedented at Levy's age.

@@fangiscool1 no offence, but you dont know what youre talking about. Im a concert pianist, I deal with nerves on stage all the time and I can tell you for a fact that nerves can hinder your performance so much it is unbelievable and the same would apply to nerves in chess. You could play like a 2700, but if youre too nervous youll have too much adrenaline running through your system causing your brain to go blank and concentration becomes a real challenge, so of course you are going to play considerably worse in those situations.

I am a sports psychologist and I have a tip for you Levy. The subconscious mind makes no distinction between constructive and destructive thought impulses. It works with the material we feed it, through our thought impulses. The subconscious mind will translate into reality a thought driven by FEAR just as readily as it will translate into reality a thought driven by COURAGE, or FAITH. Also remember that one comes, finally, to BELIEVE whatever one repeats to one's self, whether the statement be true or false. If a man repeats a lie over and over, he will eventually accept the lie as truth. Moreover, he will BELIEVE it to be the truth. Every man is what he is, because of the DOMINATING THOUGHTS which he permits to occupy his mind. Thoughts which a man deliberately places in his own mind, and encourages with sympathy, and with which he mixes any one or more of the emotions, constitute the motivating forces, which direct and control his every movement, act, and deed!

I struggle with time trouble after getting winning positions and have gotten very discouraged about advancing. To see someone like Levy open up about having a similar challenge with higher rated players and a similar "relief" feeling when he wins is refreshing. Watching too many of the GM videos where they say "its so obvious" and lay out 10 moves of calculation in three variations can be very discouraging. Thanks Levy.

This has got to be the most painful video levy ever had to make. The takeaway isn‘t that he loses sometimes, but that he‘s intimidated of other players. I didn‘t find them stronger, but he did. He‘s underestimating himself. Regardless of whether or not you will ever be a GM Levy, know that we will always believe in your Ability and we know you can do it. Don‘t be discouraged by yourself.
