If you watch frame by frame, Aho's helmet is the first thing that stops moving. For everybody saying it was clean, that means the head was the first point of contact. Just to be sure he takes out Aho, Giordano sticks out the leg (just like he did against Fowler) and Aho gets the worst of both points of contact.

Head shot is a head shot. Doesn't matter if the head is down or up. So ejection was a good call. Don't think suspension is needed.

I love Aho, but this looks like he just put himself into a bad spot. Going against the grain like that in the slot? That's the high rent district. I hate to see a brilliant young player hit like that but this is as much Aho's fault as Gios.

That was no shoulder to chest.... it was to the head. If it wasn't his head why did his helmet come up like it did? Aho is very very hockey smart, looks down at the puck for one second so he can make a shot and yeah maybe that was a mistake but also wasn't expecting to be rammed in the head and taken out at the knee by a bulldozer. I will say, the knee on knee I don't think was intentional, but the hit sure was. Also, Giordano did lift into it, his skates completely left the ice and that's what they look for with hits to the head like that. I just hope Aho is okay.

Man do I miss 80's and 90's hockey: more excitement, wide open, numerous 50 goal scorers....and plenty of open ice hits like this. When I played junior, hits like this were a fact of life if you didn't keep your head up; and the blame was soley on YOU if you got rocked like Aho just did.

Aho got past Dougie, looked towards the net instead of keeping his head on a swivel to see Giordano and tried to cut to the middle where he already was, so there's not much the d-man can do at that point besides take the body with a guy coming right at him. Now, could it have been a cleaner hit? Absolutely, knee-on-knee and shoulder checks to the head have no place in the game, but if Aho had been looking up, this could have been avoided. I don't think G should be fined, but I think Aho might be on the shelf for a while from this one. It'll be a learning experience for him for sure.

Giordano literally didn't need to move to make that hit. That's how clueless Aho was about his surroundings. Giordano stood there waiting and Aho basically ran right into him. Giordano didn't do anything wrong he pulled his elbow down and tried to make a textbook bodycheck on a player that happened to be off by himself in la-la land.

Very controversial hit. That is a text book open ice Scott Stevens hit. 5 years ago this hit would've gone under the radar BUT with todays NHL it is considered "dirty". Gio has what, 3 inches? on Aho and he hit him in the chest to chin range. only reason why you can say chest - chin range is the fact that he has bulky shoulder pads on, IN MY OPINION if i were calling that game, i would have labeled that as a clean hit. Now, for the knee on knee aspect, the league shouldn't do anything about that because he wasn't intending to go knee on knee with him, he didn't stick his knee out or anything, their knees collided because of the HIT. Love to see it when a player is hit clean and a teammate comes to the rescue and gets smoked himself. There should be an automatic instigating penalty if any player starts a fight after a clean hit.

Don't think he tried to hit him in the head, but just the way it happened was unfortunate for aho, as for the knee on knee, gio didn't stick his leg out at all to clip him.. All in all i think the NHL made the right decision and it's just very unfortunate for Aho and the Canes.

This is a tough one: stupid play by Aho. You just can't skate head down with the puck across the attack zone. You'll get hurt. Like Aho did. But after I watched it in slow motion multiple times, the principal point of contact is Aho's head. I'm certain that it was an accident. Now if you think of it, Aho was just about releasing a shot and therefore he was in vulnerable position, so is there a difference if that hit would've come after the shot? You can't shoot the puck straighten up. This was good intended legal hit that turned unfortunately illegal one. Knee to knee was unintentional, he was looking only to make good hit to Aho. I hope that NHL will see in this nothing more than an accident but I can see a chance that Giordano is going to have at least 2 games suspension.
