LYRICS
When the Cotillion arrived
We threw out the television
Model D 575
Has custom flute presets
And Harmony-Plus in addition
Now for an arm and a leg
We get three half-dozen beats to choose from
So now we can pretend
That there's an orchestra in the loungeroom
I put the Genie Bass on
So my left hand can play the choir
With 16ft Diapason
And Lowrey's patented Orchestral Symphonizer
Banjo's great on repeat
The kids want to play but they'll have to be patient
The wife can't help tapping her feet
It's a genuine home entertainment revelation
State of the art
(Hold the phone, it's so)
State of the art
[Listen to the difference!]
(Oh my god, it's so)
State of the art
[By use of a computer]
State of the art
Now we don't want to go out
When we could spend the night at home with the Cotillion
Invite the neighbours around
Start the bossanova beat and limbo from the living to the kitchen
Enjoy the state of the art
The Magic Swing Piano really is astounding
Now we can't tell them apart
But these amazing simulations end up sounding even better than the real thing
State of the art
(Hold the phone, it's so)
[Computer controlled tone colour]
State of the art
[The marriage of music to computers is quite natural]
(Oh my god, it's so)
State of the art
[It is time to hear the results]

I mean, technically he isn't since his song Eyes Wide Open hit #96 like a week after Somebody That I Used To Know hit #1. But honestly he was never going to be a consistent hit maker. His sound is just too indie and with too much substance for the brainless pop industry.

This song has an interesting backstory to it. Gotye's parents bought him a Cotillion D575, which quickly became his favorite instrument. He made this song on the instrument along with a little bit of computer touch-ups in it. He uses a sped up sample of a song called Green is the Mountain by Francis Yip, which makes up part of the beat in this song. But that is not all of what the song is about. The song tells the story of a family taken over by technology, in turn, displaying how we have grown so dependent on technology and it eventually takes over our lives. That is the basic story behind the song.

***** lighting can be fine but few people can get around in the dark. Also lights are designed with a break for profit. The first lights could go forever and in fact there is a fire station in the US that had a party not so long ago to celebrate the light that is still running after 100 years. Economics as applied by the current kleptocorporate system we live in is only economical for the ones at the top of the ladder. I argue that there is a dependency happening on many levels.

This song was the last message my friend sent me before he passed away. We didn't know eachother for long, I only had the pleasure of knowing him for one year but nevertheless it's like he knew what I was into without me ever telling him. I hope that in his last moments he achieved what he was searching for his whole life, somesort of inner peace. He was the most real and kindhearted person I knew, I'm just sorry I wasn't there for him enough that he'd reach out to me when he was troubled. I'll never forget you and that's the least I can do.

" The song tells the story of a family taken over by technology, in turn, displaying how we have grown so dependent on technology and it eventually takes over our lives. That is the basic story behind the song." This is the coment of DarkComet360, 8 years ago. The tune is more and more aligned with the perspectives that we have now in 2022....actually a very cool premonitive anthem to the End. Thus, it never gets old.

Yeah, I just finished watching the short documentary and there was a part on this song and nothing was said about how technology can be bad, he said that he wrote the song to portray how excited he was to play it, when he first got it from his parents, unless he completely refused to bring up this notion, its really about how much he loves the Cotillion and the vocals were designed to sound like if someone or something powerful from the past when the cotillion was SOTA was speaking to us in the present

This song and video have special meaning to me. It is an ode to the Lowrey Organ model D-575, given the model name "Cotillion." It was introduced in the summer of 1981. I was with Lowrey at the time and I helped debug the prototype for presentation at the NAMM convention in Chicago. I was also the first person to play it in public, at the model introduction during the "Lowrey Breakfast" dealer meeting that year.

The video has an allegorical meaning to me becoming clear by the fate of "The Family" in the video. They are strar-struck by "something"(it can be anything in your life) that makes them become totally absorbed in it and lose their self. I'm not sure if the artist of the video or the song had the most influence on it because it's clearly influenced by the video but also the lyrics.

The guy is a genuine creative, and unfortunately modern popular society just doesn't seem interested in that, they want simple, samey, repetitive music. I feel like he would've thrived in the 80's, when electronic music was about feeling and creativity. First heard this on some Dynamo show in like 2012 and it's never gotten old, just as amazing now as the first time I listened. So underrated.

the song was written when he got a cotillion himself. he said he was inspired by how technology can be so innovative and then just fall out really fast. so he wrote this song sort of like a time when the cotillion was still the best of the best in technology. and operate170, he used some keyboards on this. the horns are sampled, and many other parts are using the cotillion (im too lazy to look up how to spell that)

Still so many years later, and this song is still just as amazing. I could honestly talk about this for hours. The song itself is an absolute masterpiece! Possibly one of the best pieces (musically) that I’ve ever heard. There are just so many layers, that you can almost always discover something new. And there are so many hooks in it! Like the violins, the wind instruments, the harmonies.. And then we have the MV. And everything fits absolutely perfectly with the song. The message is there, there’s a clear story, and every little musical cue is being amplified by the animation. Almost to a point where the song wouldn’t be the same without it. But I think he wrote the song prior to working on the video, which means the animator(s) and storyboard artist(s) are also just THAT good! It’s incredible to see true genius play off each other so well.

I feel like Daft Punk must have been aware of this tune. Really reminds me of the Random Access Memories album vibe. Love both.

It's 70s lounge music with modern production and a vocoder. It's a good track and a nice tribute to 70s organ music, but it's not "unique".

I just realized that this is basically a dub reggae song. In fact, the entire instrumental part in the middle 8 would be perfect for a freestyle IMO.

Could this song perhaps be a message about technology ruining music? Stating that everything is so mechanized by synthesizers and mixing software that everything is practically done for you and there is hardly any creativity or ingenuity involved? Just an idea.

***** That actually makes sense, There was a part in the song that said, these amazing simulations end up sounding better then the real thing, that gives this theory real support

+David Rodriguez But Gotye is an artist that creates songs almost completely by combining samples from all kinds of old dusty records that no one knows anymore. Without mixing software his music would be entirely different, and you cannot say there isn't any creativity involved on Gotye's part... This song sounds more like a 70-ties advertisement for an organ like this.

+Duncan Blair At face value, I'd say yes, but what does the tone of the song and ESPECIALLY the music video remind you of? A radical discovery (in America, 196X) appears and destroys the concept of the nuclear family, as a cautionary tale. This is a satire of propaganda films. This is to music what Reefer Madness is to weed. And I know you weren't slating Gotye specifically, but you _can't_ say that this song, which incorporates all those things, is void of creativity or ingenuity (much of Making Mirrors was made with this 'state of the art' synth, as 'outdated' as it now seems) It's just a different way of doing things.
