Gouache requires patience. Every time I am going to paint fast something very simple I end up by working a few hours on the painting. Adjusting the colors, creating a color harmony and atmosphere in the painting takes time, but if you are patient enough you will eventually see something beautiful on your paper ;)

Lena Rivo it's beautiful! 💜 I wanted to know if you complete your artwork in one sitting or do you complete it over a period of time, by taking breaks in between?
@LenaRivo

purrplish Thank you! I usually complete them in one sitting. Sometimes, after working on a painting for more than three house, I may leave it until next day. This one wasn’t too hard; it took me about two hours.

Hi Lena! Is this the one with the Zink white in it? Leela
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 6 жыл бұрын
L. Beukema hi Leela! Yes, it is. I deliberately hadn’t put titanium white on the palette until the very last stage of painting where I started adding some strong highlights to the town area and the clouds. I must say zinc white does make a difference. The colors in the finished painting are much brighter and cleaner that in my other gouaches which sometimes look a bit washed. Also, because zinc white isn’t as thick as titanium white I find it more appropriate for layering.

I like the way you blend colors with your finger - I have to borrow this technique from you :D And I've always wanted to tell you how precisely you manage to show the light in your paintings - they have a character! Thank you for these inspirational timelapses ^^

TralliValli Thanks very much! I think light has always been the greatest inspiration for artists and I am not an exception. Beautiful paintings can be done without a direct light but still light, especially sunlight, changes everything... I use my finger to soften edges all the time. I think it came from oil painting. My philosophy is the more diferente textures and mess I add to the painting the more interesting it becomes :D Again, it has always worked for me in oil painting so I keep following it with gouache too!

Lovely as always! I adore the way you paint seascapes. The sea, the clouds...everything makes me want to paint and to dream ☁🌊⛅You are such a great inspiration and the music you choose, I can't explain how well it fits with the paintings. I hope that one day you will present us the finished sketchbook in a video! I sincerely can't wait to see all of the artworks you made 😄💚💐As soon as I discovered you on KZfaq, you became one of my favourite artists. I have a lot more things to tell you, but the comment would be way way too long😂 Untill the next time...lots of love 💞

I use short handle brushes for acrylics. Flats for the first stages of painting and small round brushes for details. Watercolor brushes are too soft for gouache ;)

Hi Lena, thanks to you I have been painting outdoors with gouache. My paintings in my pad are warping. I taped the edges the way you showed us and I take the tape off when the painting is done so the tape doesn’t stick to the paper..The four paintings I’ve done are warped. What do you recommend? Thanks
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 5 жыл бұрын
lenmey1 Hi Lenore! What paper did you use? I use masking tape only to keep the edges of my paintings clean and not to stretch the paper. I use 140lbs watercolor paper (cold or hot pressed) and it has never gotten buckled. If you use the same paper as I do then you probably use gouache like watercolor which makes the paper to absorb too much water. Gouache dries instantly on paper when its consistency is creamy so it doesn’t usually provoke warping of the paper...

Lena Rivo .Thanks for replying Lena, I will try less water🤞👍

I am considering using gouache.. I have a few questions, can I reuse same brushes I use for watercolors? Or do the brushes need to be separate? Can I use gouache on thin paper?
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 5 жыл бұрын
I find watercolor brushes being too soft for gouache. I use acrylic brushes with it. Gouache isn’t as light as watercolor, it has body, so it is better to use a thicker watercolor paper with it.

@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 4 жыл бұрын
Я использую гуашь марок Winsor and Newton и Holbein.

How do you prevent the gouache from drying out super quickly? I always feel like im doing something wrong whenever i do gouache because it dries down İMMEDIATLY without ay time for me to use the colours
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 6 жыл бұрын
:)))) I know! I cant prevent it. It really dries very fast. I mist my paint box and the mixing palette with water every ten minutes or so. Although it depends on the surrounding air temperature. Working outdoors in summer is even worse.. Just mist your squeezed paint and the mixing surface when you feel it is starting to dry.. There is no other solution really. I get used to it though and dont mind spraying my paint every few minutes.

What brand of glass do you use? When you bend the paper after it’s dry does the paint crack?
@LenaRivo
@LenaRivo 6 жыл бұрын
MBirdsong what glass? Gouache is pretty flexible, but it probably might crack if you bend the paper. I don’t do that :)
