In this episode we have a discussion with Javier from the British Gouldian Finch Club. We discuss his thoughts around fostering and breeding this beautiful finch in general. We also take a look at the checklist for the month of November (southern hemisphere).
Please email us photos of your birds, or comment on the video with questions you may have. I do try and respond to every question and I also appreciate your suggestions for topics. (Please bear in mind that if it is not something I am personally well informed about it may take a while to do an episode on the topic as I need to find an expert who is able to share their knowledge.

Excellent episode. I agree with Javier on the consequences of using feeder foster parents. Long-term use makes it almost inevitable that the parenting skills are lost.

I'm a canary breeder although I did try Gouldians years ago. It wasn't a success for me due to my ignorance. In the canary world, the use of feeders fkr, say, the Norwich has led to Norwich that don't rear. Get I kept Norwich which did read their own perfectly well. In old books you'll read that the Norwich was used as a feeder for the Scots Fancy which is my specialist variety. The old Scots Fancy more or less died out (what we have today is a re-creation) and that might have been a contributory factor. Nowadays, you'd use Scots as feeders for Norwich. It's a strange world. Keep up your films which are most informative and the way forward for our hobby.

Thanks Donald. I remember the episode showing your Scots Fancy I remember thinking how interesting some of the type canaries are i appearance etc.. Very interesting indeed that they were used as feeder birds. I know very little about the canaries but I enjoy Matt's show and learn a lot.

I’m also convinced it’s how that works ! That’s why I never use foster parents, Id rather have less babies but let the nature does her thing

i am in the UK very interesting video i only let my Gouldian's parent rear but mine are not show birds but interested in trying to breed show type birds

Breeding for the show bench comes with a whole new set of challenges and makes you really have to focus on your pairings. In terms of fostering to other species I don't think it is needed. I use my good parents to raise my bad parent chicks and then leave those chicks to learn from the good parents when they raise their next round. The challenge is what makes gouldians interesting.
