How to Clean a Semi-Auto Shotgun | Winchester SX4: Some of you may find cleaning your semi-auto shotgun to be a straightforward and simple task while others may be overwhelmed with the process. The matter of the fact is, whether you are new to cleaning your shotgun or not, many people aren’t doing a great job of cleaning their shotguns.
After 100’s of shotgun cleanings over nearly a decade of shooting professionally, we have learned a thing or two that work well when it comes to cleaning and lubricating our shotguns so they keep up with the rigorous workload we put them through.
This is how we clean our semi-auto shotguns (the Winchester SX4) but it’s not the only way. We have tried several methods and several different cleaning and lubricating products and this is what we have found to work best. If you have any questions, comment below and let us know.

Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!

Been cleaning a SX3 for years the same way. The things I do different is I use a thick grease for the choke tube and I use gun scrubber followed by compressed air to clean the trigger group. But hell I cant imagine anyone in the world who knows how to clean a super x shotgun better than you guys. Thanks for the video.

Sounds like you already got it down, nice 👊 The choke grease may be better than the oil that we put on if the chokes are left in for long periods of time and a lot of rounds. We don’t have any issues with our chokes if we put just a little oil on the threads. Thanks for watching and sharing. SG

I only shot around 175 rounds through my sx4 and I took it apart the gold ish looking part wow it had quit a bit of carbon build up on it with only 175-200 rounds through it. I love the gun so much first time I got a sx4 semi automatic I got it in 3 inch best thing I bought for shooting.

TRUTH. Gas guns are different. I actually run felt pads on a dremel and using 800grit lapping compound on my SX2’s mag tube and the barrel where the piston sits. And run dry silicone lube on all gas system components

Absolutely love this video. Very informative. I just got an sx4 for my birthday a couple weeks ago. My only issue is I can’t find the carbon remover anywhere and when I click on the link you provided it shows a light tan bottle that says Otis complete gun cleaner.

I experienced the same thing, so I searched the web for something similar. I ended up choosing "Bore Tech Inc. Carbon Remover". I am cleaning my sx4 today, so I could let you know how it works if you'd like!

I just got the Sx4 and putting the trigger back on was kind of a pain. I had to put pressure on it while I put the pins back in place. Not like a browning my friend has. The holes line up for him easily

Have you ever figured out how many rounds you shoot each week? Also, how many rounds are for practice and for performance? I'm betting you shoot at least as many, if not more for practice than you do when performing.

After Running the nylon brush with pad and synthetic gun oil down the inside of the barrel. 1. Do you use gun scrubber for the inside of the barrel? 2. Do you then use dry lube on the inside of the barrel?

I have cleaned my SX4 following this video step by step a couple of times and its a great video for all new SX4 owners to watch. My only issue with the SX4 is, after assembling the shotgun after cleaning, on 2 occasions I have gone out to hunt and the first round fires with no issues, the weapon cycles the next round in the chamber and then that's where it happens, NOTHING. No fire, no click, NADA. It doesn't matter if I use the stock choke or a Pattern Master or a Carlson choke tube. Do you have any ideas on what may be causing this ? Have you ever had this issue? I take the SX4 apart in the field and do nothing but re-assemble and it works just fine. I'm stumped!!

I have an SX3. My guess would be for some reason the next shell is not getting into the chamber correctly? Make sure there is enough lubrication in that area

Excellent how-to vid. I am still fine tuning my cleaning process and products to clean my first semi-auto shotgun, and I picked up a lot of good ideas here. So is that Gun Scrubber comparable to a contact cleaner? It sure seems like it. Jerry Miculek uses contact cleaner to blow out areas such as the trigger group. That Windex pro tip was very interesting - looking forward to trying it with a scotch brite pad. Have tried Hoppes #9 bore cleaner and a nylon brush on the piston/gas port area, but it doesn't really do much to remove the carbon there.

@@gouldshooting Checked it out. I see you are using all Otis/Shooters Choice products now. I have always been a Hoppes guy, but after doing a bit of research I see that the Shooters bore cleaner is generally considered better. I actually never heard of it haha! Bought a small jar to try out - it is a lot more expensive so I am expecting better results. Also bought a can of their polymer safe Quik Scrub to try - couldn't find the polymer safe BC Gun Scrubber anywhere.

It really depends, if your decoying and expect shots 20yds or less IC works great for steel. I usually shoot a MOD which is a Full when using steel. AG

I’ve never seen it hurt the finish on any of the guns I’ve used. That being said you might want to test it on a very small area to see what it does. But I think it will be fine. AG

There is no reason or Beni fit to lubricating the magazine tube. Actually doing so will cause more problems with the collection of carbon, dirt, etc. AG

What would happen if the bolt did slam home in the chamber with the barrel removed?

The bolt handle slams into the receiver and it causes a nick, not the end of the world one time, but I don’t like to dents in new guns when it can be helped. Doing it over and over would not be good for your receiver. AG

We remove our chokes a lot and we oil the threads so we don’t have any issues. Choke grease may be a good idea for many of the folks out there. SG

Hi, I have the sx4 and I use it for trap. Two problems: 1) shells hitting the next guy and 2) harsh vibration on the last round. Fixed 1 with a "save it" shell catcher and I have no solution for 2. So, get a semi auto if you really need. Like for skeet or hunting. Otherwise, pump action or over and under will be way nicer for trap.

It is fairly new. The vibration is basically the semi-auto mechanism right? compared to a pump which basically hits the primer and nothing else move.

If using the gun from the shoulder the way it was designed to shoot the break in is really simple. Just go out and break some clays with it. Put a few boxes though it. Just like any new equipment all the parts just need to break in. Heavy loads are an option, but I just shoot regular heavy target loads. AG
