Hey genius chick. Do the employees at the Cookout in NC make $25 an hour? Do you really not get that if the worker gets $25 an hour, the burger is $20, and nobody buys the burger, so the employee gets fired because they do not need employees to serve non-existent customers. Whatever degree she got, was NOT in economics. The mom and pop shops are not struggling, because they already closed down.

Yup. "Economy of Scale" is a nasty weapon. Back in the day when Walmart was taking over small town America, they had a business model where new stores operated in the red for their first 5 years, and were entirely floated by other stores so they could keep their prices insanely low. Its impossible to compete with that, so everyone else closed down. Then, the prices went back up after all the local competition was gone.

Most are also run by franchisees, not the corporation itself. Example: 90-95% of McDonalds are owned by franchisees (their own website sites both numbers), not by 'big old meanie' corporate McDonalds. McDonalds is a real estate firm, supply chain and marketing corporation at this point. A lot of franchisees are on razor thin margins, barely seeing any actual profit for their investments.

100% Correct. This type of job used to be geared toward workers such as young workers who were wanting to show they could perform a job (arrive on time, get along with co-workers, take direction from supervisors, etc...). They used this experience to obtain better paying jobs elsewhere or they could choose to try for a better job at that establishment. There are many people who have made a really good living at fast food restaurants, but simply working as the fry cook, janitor, or cashier shouldn't guarantee that the worker can live in that area's 4 BR 2BA house on that income alone.

It wasn't until the last 15 years that they all of a sudden became "careers" that needed full living wages. And mom-and-pops can't really survive in this environment at those prices either, kiddo. They don't have the negotiating power of buying in bulk to get lower prices from suppliers, and inflation has gone up so fast you literally CAN'T live off a mom-and-pop counter job (and no, I'm not talking managerial positions, I'm talking the waiters/waitresses, etc).

@robertbrown1021 There are many tax loopholes that make them more profitable. When the cost of labor increases, it causes more small businesses to close. This benefits McDonald's. Good for Robbie on standing his ground with the clueless co-host and he is 100% correct! The answer is not a minimum wage increase because it's not the government's role to interfere in business operations. What is the government's role is to make legislation incentivizing new businesses to open which will stimulate the job market. By creating more jobs employees have more job options. Businesses then have to compete with competition for labor. When you have companies competing for employees the only thing they can do is increase starting salaries. Unfortunately California's legislation is driving businesses out and because of less job options companies can pay lower salaries because they know there's nowhere else for the employee to go!

I have a client that owns multiple McDonald's stores in SoCal. I recently asked how the $20 minimum wage law affected them. Prices went up, employees had their hours cut, labor costs are up 50% and revenue is down 20%. People see McDonald's as some faceless evil corporation. The reality is there is a good chance your local McDonald's is run by a local family business.

I live in Mississippi. McDonald's prices have increased and service has also gotten worse. It's not faster, cheaper, and healthier to make the burger at home. We haven't been to McDonald's in months now. And now that we're aware of seed oils, we won't be going back.

For my location it prices mostly stay the same or went down and they hired more. Few went up, and I live in a expensive coastal city. Same with other cities nearby. Here the thing it depends of who the franchiser is, and if their great at managing. I know personally franchiser that complain about paying for more workers in one store location. Yet on the same breath goes and and makes 1 or 2 new location in a expensive city that forces them to hire triple the amount of people on a slow day. While the location their whining about paying for more workers is a way smaller location, and they are recognize by corporate as the top growing money making places with great feed back and returning customers. So it no excuse to still force that whole narrative about wage increases. In the end of the day the franchisers are the ones causing these mass closures due to wage hikes. Like I been to a McDonalds in los Angeles the prices where decent for the location. Been to Vegas almost double or triple the price of the same meal. Lets be honest here Vegas don't raise their wages as often as California but at least California not all location raise their prices absurdly. look at in and out it only going up 25 cents.

Minimum wage was NEVER meant to be a final goal. It's while being in school, learning atrade jump-starting a young life - not to retire on!

She’s in her 20’s, supported Bernie Sanders’ campaign, and did not study economics. All that sounds right.
