I'm not a teacher or married to one but I really am disappointed in our governors comments about teachers. Teachers starting salaries are around $32,000; they work tirelessly during the school year to educate our kids. Thank you teachers for teaching our children. Shame on you governor for not respecting what they do for us for so little pay and apparently for so little thanks.

Most states average starting salary for teachers are in the $30k range, NM is not the lowest or the highest. I would imagine their benefit package (healthcare, retirement, sick days, disability vacations etc) is probably around another 30%, then factor in that they have off 3 months in the summer and you'll find that the value of their entire annual compensation is valued at around $52k. And that's just to start. The average salary (not starting) is around $45k, using the same formula the total annual compensation is valued at about $73k. Teaching is an honorable profession, as are many others, but I can think of many other professions that have it much worse.

Lou Nunya So, basically you are just passing the buck? I hope you don't ever meet any actual teachers and debate them on their salaries. People who think like that NM Governor are the reason why this country is so messed up. Anyone who has ever set foot in any public school will see the sad working conditions,the corrupt politics and hard work that goes unnoticed, uncredited and unappreciated by fat cats thieves like Susanna Martinez. I wonder how she would like it if she took a dramatic paycut????

If a teacher works 2080 hrs per year and is paid $32,000 for that year he is making an hourly wage of $15.38 per hour. That is not much for a city like Albuquerque. Maybe one could earn another $5,000 during the summer months or about $37,000 per year. Now - good luck getting a mortgage for a $250,000 with this income. Good luck trying to raise a family with this income. Remember - this is a person who attended at least 4 years at a university and paid $$$$ for that education. If we can't do anything to actually improve the teacher's income can we at least acknowledge that they should be getting better salaries?

opadennis YOU are RIGHT! But stupid people (politicians) like GUSANA (worm parasite) MARTINEZ does NOT give a SHIT about YOU,ME,TEACHERS or anyone but her political buddies and Texas fatcats! Republicans in general don't give a shit about education unless, it pertains to THEIR kids. Otherwise, your kids don't matter. Kids are ONLY important enough to send off to war and keep uneducated. Martinez is ALL about the money and her pseudo pro-education smoke screen is just another scam. This is the same woman who cut Santa Fe's Community College funding and wanted to get rid of lottery scholarship money!!!! So, it is NOT amazing that she DETESTS teachers salaries and would want to cut those too. Anyone who threatens teachers' salaries and education DOES NOT BELONG IN OFFICE!

I have family members who are teachers, and I can assure you, teachers work a minimum of 60 hours per week. My wife is a music teacher. She creates lesson plans for three different schools, for grades k-8. Anybody who thinks that teachers are overpaid is ignorant.

Since when do teachers not work 2 or 3 months out of the year? (By the way, their checks are prorated so they are actually not getting paid for the days in the summer they are "not working". She should know that!) Apparently she does not know teachers. Not only are they going back to school or preparing for the next school year, or working another job because their pay is so paltry but they are kicking it big time. I wished she had the same work ethic that they do. Maybe she would be a half-decent governor.

+Carla Sevilla Trump needs to get the woman, spanish and black vote or he'll be trounced by Hillary iin the general election. not a chance in hell unless he works out this major issue. The best choice is Condaleeza Rice. The trump voters aren't enough in the general election. Martinez is no good for the spanish/ or blacks, they don't know her. Everyone knows condaleeza Rice.
