The Navajo did not take land from the Hopis, They were driven westward from fertile lands in Colorado and NM by the settlers eventually completely surrounding their villages on the mesas which they have occupied for centuries and still occupy, some of the most desolate lands in North America but where they were told to settled by Massua their God. Some people care but are incredibly ignorant because they didn't know they were autistic, have had untreated illnesses for years and spent life trying to keep up and going to therapy that never worked. I know when my folk came here they were running from Europe and the church because they still lived in small family groups and still held to some of the old ways, the Navajo from what my great great aunt told me just blended in. Most those that went west always came back, my mom and I were the first two not raised in the Ozark Mountains. My aunt taught me a lot. But at 58 and how things are right now I doubt I will see that but hopefully my kis and grandkids will. The increasingly outrageous lies and manipulations of the governments lately ARE waking people up to some sad underlying truths of greed and disregard for native people and the land and nature itself. Being able to respectfully collect herbs, pine nuts and dead wood should be part of proper land management. And self-sufficiency should be taught in ALL schools, along with basic agriculture, herbology, mechanics, physics and such. It’s so sad to hear the state of town meetings focused only on getting unsustainable government funding. I love hearing Grandfather Wally speak his message fully in the native tongue first, and then explain things in English pointing out the discrepancies and mistakes that are allowed to continue out of ignorance… A book/ workbook compilation would be a worthwhile project as well as getting this video series into the schools especially in your area. I’ve heard that in Canada, kids go to various ethnic schools on Saturdays to learn the language of their heritage (Greek, First Nations, French…) my parents were immigrants and we made a big effort to learn their languages, valued by my parents, seeking to be a part of creating a cultural community in the midst of a big city with all kinds of people. It’s a personal commitment, not always easy. I think I feel the same. I just had the thought: I wouldn't really want to feel at home in the world as it is: a cage, a trap; flourescent and sparkly, hyperconspicuated, hypnotic, and no less malevolent for its ubiquity. The malevolence, the machine, it wants us to feel sad and alone and without hope, and that thought is enough to put a fire in my guts, as a wakeful human with a conscience and the love of freedom... I'm determined to be a force for good, in any and every way I can, because the trap is everywhere and everything in modern civilization, and those of us who can see it, are going to need to work together. There are good people who will need our help, and we're going to need to help ourselves. I too feel the weight of the dystopia under construction around us, and the weight of the evil of the past. I get down, I get exhausted, but I try to remember how it feels to be deep in the woods, and how it feels to put my hands in the soil. I remind myself of family and friendship. All that is wrong in the world serves as a sort of compass. There may be infinite ways to go wrong, but there is only one way to go. I can imagine a peaceful human future, in harmony with nature again. We can only rise above. It's the only direction I can discern. You're right about the universe, the score is being kept. We thought it was possibly the site of a settlement and a battle or hunting ground. We often played at being Indians . Good memories. In winter we played being Eskimos and built igloos, warm inside there. Plenty of neighbors to play with and fresh air and sunshine to enjoy. Snow days often. Long ago now.
