If you live in Ontario, a new credit to be aware for your 2019 taxes that is not mentioned in this video is LIFT - Low-income Individuals and Families Tax Credit. It's available for individuals with low income and minimum wage workers to help refund the cost of provincial taxes. You can learn more about it, any other credits for families this year, in our Tax Credit for Families video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5yEhaeB38imdKs.html.

So as a married couple can we both apply if our max household income is below $45k? We are in Quebec, so CPP equivalent I'll get approx. $950 and my wife $750($20k/yr). Not sure if I need to add OAS when calculating but even then we would be below the $45k and we would have no other taxable income. Thank you.

What happens when your income stops? Do they asses your gis based on an estimate going forward? Obviously last years income doesn't help you when this year you have no employment. What about the $5000 deduction from income? And the 50% after that to 15k? Do you know how that works? The government site is very confusing.

Hello I watched your video for the gis and was hoping you can help me. I am presently 69. Until the pandemic hit I was receiving $41 a month in gis because I was still working full-time. Due to health reasons I retired and received CRB and EI last year in sept of 2022 I received my last cheque so been living off those incomes since this then. Since this year's income with oas. Cpp and gis made a total income of 13,000. When I get my income tax done this year will my gis increase to the max? Btw I am widowed thank-you for your help. Pat

Hi Last Empire, if your parents have a relatively straight forward tax return, they may be eligible to file their taxes for free with CRA who take care of this for them. CRA started sending out notices last year to clients with simple and predictable tax situations. They would receive a letter in the mail or a message on their CRA "My Account" portal inviting them to participate and the phone number they should call. There are also free tax clinics with CRA where they can meet with someone in person if that is more comfortable for them and discuss all of this in person. Hope that helps 🙂

At 0:16 it says in order to qualify you must be receiving OAS; I have no idea what OAS is. EDIT: Is this something that applies to Ontario only? If so, it should say so prominently, preferably in the name of the video; and definitely in the description. EDIT2: Never mind; Old Age Security; and I would need to be 65 to qualify; I'm only 63... So I'm F.

@TheIndependentDollar
@TheIndependentDollar 3 жыл бұрын
Under 65, the benefit available is the "Allowance" but unfortunately it is not available to single individuals unless you meet the criteria they gave you. You might be eligible for the GST credit, it is income tested but that might be something worth looking into. Not sure if you've seen this before but the government has a really easy tool you can use that asks you some basic question then narrows down what options are available to you. You can use it without logging in or inputting contact information. Here is the link to it, it's off of the Government's website: srv138.services.gc.ca/daf/s/bf61d0eb-493a-4548-9ec5-6de53a74fed9?GoCTemplateCulture=en-CA Or you can search for it, it's called Government of Canada Benefits Finder.

CPP is based on how much you contributed over those 26 years. Service Canada should be able to provide you with a schedule of your contributions and explain how they came up with that number for you. Most Canadians receive close to half of the maximum entitlement.

Hi John, the allowance needs to be applied for in writing - you are not automatically enrolled in it. Here is a link to the CRA website which has the forms you need to complete and also shows you where you need to mail them out to: www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/publicpensions/cpp/old-age-security/guaranteed-income-supplement/allowance/apply.html. You will want to apply right away as the process may take a few months. For OAS, you should receive a letter notifying you that you were automatically enrolled. If you didn't, then you need to apply.
