Federal Hiring Advice

This video covers the government job interview process. For federal government job interviews there is a specific process that is followed. There are also specific types of questions that are asked. The most difficult are the performance based interview questions. This video explains the entire interview process. Also, if you wait until the end I give my responses to three specific interview questions that I have been asked before on interviews.

The hiring manager does the reference checks before they make a selection. Assuming the reference checks went well it could take a couple days for the hiring manager to send their selection to HR and for a TJO to go out. HR won't know anything until they get the selection back from the hiring manager.

A lot of people are getting turned down jobs because of their “grading system “. There was a time where you applied for announcement and once the announcement closed hr would give an offer to the best candidate. Why did that change?
@federalhiringadvice1385
@federalhiringadvice1385 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know when that was but it hasn't been done that way in the 9 years I've been in federal HR. Instead everyone that meets the minimum qualifications is sent to the hiring manager for additional screening to determine who would be the best candidate.

@@federalhiringadvice1385 Your right about that because I’ve been with the government for over 15 yrs. This happen back in 2009. If a person been working with the government for a number of years and have listed there qualifications especially if the candidate is applying for announcement that they have done before and listed on there resume. For example, an announcement post (Supervisor Document Imaging) a candidate apply for the announcement, candidate has worked in Document Imaging before and listed the qualifications on resume, why can’t that candidate be given the offer without the formalities. @@tinajohnson4685 There are non-competitive processes such as VRA and schedule A, that allow folks to be placed regardless of grade, so long as their resume demonstrates they meet the needed specialized experience for successful performance in the position. You can also use delegated examining - under delegated examining, applicants are not required to meet time in grade, only experience. That said, the rules exist to ensure merit systems principles are followed and to reduce the number of prohibited personnel practices. Most agencies also have agreements with their local labor union and have to take those things into account when the post job opportunity announcements. Yeah, it is complicated stuff. And it would be infinitely easier if you could just pick someone. But there are always folks out there who do stuff they are not supposed to and then rules have to be established.
