This Government is spending money recklessly, treating it as if it were mere monopoly money. This is partly because of their reliance on career bureaucrats for advice, individuals who have enjoyed very high incomes within the Canberra bubble for so long that money has lost its value to them.
They are probably surprised by the public's outraged reaction to their decision to raise the Governor General's salary from $495,000 to $719,000.
Such a large salary increase in the middle of a cost of living crisis showed a severe lack of awareness. Canberra bureaucrats aren't experiencing the cost of living pain felt by the broader population, as they are insulated by their excessively hire salaries.
Rather than meeting the public outcry with a mea culpa and reducing the salary, Minister Gallagher huffed and puffed. She failed to grasp simple maths (an increase from $495,000 to $719,000 is a 43.2% rise), conflagrated the situation by raising the previous Governor General's military pension and then accused me of misleading Parliament.
In truth, the Government and their bureaucrats were just looking after a mate and got called out for it.

So the GG's pay goes up from about $1,300 a day, 365 days a year, to about $1969 A DAY, 365 DAYS a year. The Increase is $224,000 a year, or $613 A DAY!!!!! Goodness me, that's the daily increase? I receive a carer payment which is about $613 a FORTNIGHT!!!! These people are delusional if they think these salaries are realistic.

You’re argument sucks Katy, this chick hasn’t done decades of sacrifice in the military. She hasn’t missed birthdays wedding and buried mates. Cosgrove/Hurley had at least contributed to society before taking up the roll. They deserve that pension if they continue to serve they nation they should be remunerated accordingly

And my ADF pension ( 33 years) disabled and discharged...will stop when I get to retirement age and I go to old age pension of 30,000 ...if I'm lucky. Absolutely disgraceful!

Now it’s clear now - the poor Gov General was underpaid because she didn’t have another income stream eg “ a military pension”. And so would only be earning $400 k Pa. And so needed a $200k pay rise. How many Australians earn less than $200k and will probably not get a pension ? Well done Albo Is this so his mates can keep up with the last 3 pay rises for parliamentarians ? Average Australians - reach for the stars - becomes a Politician or senior bureaucrat so you can also enjoy the Benefits that flow from good government.

What an insult. My gas went up 85% this month. My food was $100 up to now over $360 for the same crap! I’m sick of the corruption in government. ASIC must go!. Private bank in our post office for all citizens!! Come on not to hard. Stop corruption from lobbying! Transparency is required!!!!!!
