Right now, there are too many people who need an affordable place to live. SB 1537 is a critical step in the right direction, building more homes for Oregonians to live - brick by brick - to ease our housing crisis.

Thanks for talking to your constituents like we are gathered around the reading rug for snacks and a nap. What is this, kindergarten? Oh and I appreciate how you try and work in the class warfare too. Nice touch. I’ve been trying to sell a very affordable condo in Salem since December and still haven’t seen those ‘rich folks’ come along with their bidding war. Note to government, “cut the red tape and all the hoops for builders to jump through and a lot more housing will get built”

How about making homefront businesses easier too. Small homes and multiple homes on small lots. Just building more houses won't do much to fix the problems nearly every state is having.

I believe we are now experiencing the collapse of government. In Oregon, our roads are full of litter, sick elderly people on the streets unable to get shelter, or help NOW, because of all the bureaucratic BS. Mentally ill people on the streets, no help. Roads are a mess, what happened to the infrastructure dollars??? The only work I have seen where I live was to make UNNECESSARY changes to lanes, while pot holes remain. We have too many people at the top sitting around in "task force" groups accomplishing absolutely NOTHING!!! Housing problem? Yes! I live at the coast. I have watched the homes disappear for years. Where have they gone??? Torn down to build hotels and condos for tourists. Homes bought up for vacation second and third homes. Corporations buying up homes and using them as vacation rentals, and tax write offs. In Seaside, EVERYTHING is oriented toward tourists. Take a drive during the winter and you will see a vast amount of housing sitting empty, owned by someone who does not live there. In the 90s I had clientele who owned homes on the prom in Seaside. Clear back then they were worried because they didn't think their families would be able to keep the homes because of the ridiculous increases in taxes. Now most of those homes are owned by corporations. Same thing now happening in Astoria. People who are from here, and lived here, can't find housing. People move here form California, Florida, and Texas (biggest offenders!) and pay above asking price buying up homes. Immigration from other countries is one thing, but what I see is the invasion of people moving to Oregon from other states, especially Californians, driving up the cost of living here.

I support efforts to increase housing supply, especially for lower-income and working families, who are hurt most by the housing crisis. This is a national problem.

I understand that you are considering a veto on funding for a couple of communities in regards to money they are requesting for sewage and water treatment. This funding however is imperative. To increase housing upgrades to sewage treatment is a must since more housing will increase output of said sewage and this is why upgrades are necessary.

What is not demonstrated with Legos is farm land that Kotek wants to take out of production to build houses on. She has an alliance with developers and wants to make farm land available for them to build on. Apparently she thinks its okay because people can buy food from grocery stores instead of growing it.

I understand that Oregon has a lower vacancy rate than most other states in the union, but I hope that you don't intend to build these domiciles to the benefit of the corporate landlords and private equity firms who are disproportionately contributing to the homelessness problem of other states by holding vacant properties as an investment. If you begin to build new homes you must do something to ensure that they are either added to the state's pool of public housing or sold to real families who are actually going to live there. If you don't, instead of solving Oregon's housing crisis you will only be facilitating the transfer of wealth between the public sector and private equity. Please be very careful about how these homes are built, and for whom.
@stutterfly4722
@stutterfly4722 4 ай бұрын
Private equity firms ownership of housing development like Blackrock is tiny. The unethical practices of vacancy to keep prices up is disgusting but statistically not a major contributing factor to the housing crisis. Local zoning boards hold way responsibility.
@Jx493
@Jx493 4 ай бұрын
@@stutterfly4722 In Oregon yes, but this is not the case in every state in the country. If this project is mishandled Oregon will only be adding rental units, and at a rate lower than the state is developing property, which will only drive rents up. The options of home ownership or public housing have to grow proportionally (or imo to a disproportionately greater extent) compared to rentals in order to prevent collusion between landlords and other practices that should frankly be criminal. This criminal-esque behavior has already taken root with regard to the office and commercial sectors in much of Oregon, especially Portland, and you certainly don't want to end up like Syracuse (or Upstate NY in general) with a surplus of housing and commercial space but still experiencing a homelessness crisis, in spite of the fact that home ownership is viable on paper. It's just next to impossible to actually win the bid if you're not coming in cash, which most families are not, especially not if they're coming off the street. In any event, it's essential to be careful and ensure these homes actually end up housing real people. It is also essential that if a family leaves a property they own to move into one of these new developments (which, let's face it, most new tenants of these homes will not be coming off the street), their old home is not acquired by a corporate entity practicing rent-seeking or a private equity firm. As much as I want to love how so many mayors and governors are talking about finally doing something about this housing crisis, almost all of them when faced with the question of what kind of housing to develop and for whom, say "it doesn't matter, it doesn't even need to be affordable, we just need to saturate the market that will drive prices down". This is literally trickle down economics, don't fall for it. Demand a social housing solution, refuse a neoliberal housing solution.
@mohammedsarker5756
@mohammedsarker5756 4 ай бұрын
@@Jx493 The problem with Upstate NY is that they don't have good jobs/industries as opposed to an inadequate housing supply. It would help if you had more rental units to be built because that's the entry-level housing option for most first-time housing market participants. Also "building more housing" has NOTHING to do with trickle-down economics, which is a tax theory, complete apples to oranges, especially since the former has been proven to make housing more affordable (Austin is literally lowering rents due to their boom) and the latter has been thoroughly discredited for decades.
@Jx493
@Jx493 4 ай бұрын
@@mohammedsarker5756 I would spend time addressing each of your points individually, but I'm pretty sure they're in bad faith and you know better. Instead I'll just say that trickle down economics is pretty much any time you pump money into the top of a market and expect the benefit to trickle down to the little guy. It doesn't matter if it's tax cuts for the rich, or flooding the market with rental units controlled by private equity. Trickle-down economics is an economic philosophy, not some specific economic practice.

What she leaves out of this little diorama is government: Gov't artificially limits land for housing (when we have plenty of land) Gov't imposes costly regulations on housing (up to $100k in govt costs to build A house). Bidenomics inflation has driven mortgage costs to more than double in 3 years (2.7% to 7%+). Her solution? Increase taxes (making housing more expensive) to subsidize govt housing programs (the most expensive kind of housing) and redistribute wealth and income.

Keep mass home development out of Oregon. Limit it to 300 hoe subdivisions per developer. This keep mass developers ( IE: KB homes ) out of Oregon and allows small local builders to make the money and keep jobs local to the state. Mass developers will destroy the economy and the land. BTW it's Lego not Legos... even multiple Lego is still "Lego" ..

We need military intervention and a good six bases built. One one each state’s border and the coast. Then we need a housing and job priority law for locals before immigrants. All this is a good two decades behind and the charade has gone on long enough. Heck no we don’t want our marijuana taxes to go towards hard drug addicts. It’s taxation without representation and keeping the cost too high for the disabled buyers. We want medical grade cannabis legalized. All that weak marijuana is bad for the asthmatic and disabled, not to mention the environment. It is moldy and making people sicker. Really we need THC tablets provided by Medicare for free. It’s long overdue and not much to ask. How dare they tax us to make things worse for us.
