Brazil and Japan made several agreements back in the XIX and XX centuries. Brazil needed affordable workforce and Japan was facing huge economical problems. Several Japanese families came here to work on coffee and sugar cane plantations and planned to get back when they made enough money, but a huge portion started families and decided to stay, moving to the capitals. What was interesting is that this Japanese population continued to have the same string identity, recognizing themselves as Japaneses, even if legally they were Brazilians now. So they taught their children the Japanese culture, language and practices. A big community formed and even Japanese schools were built. It was only when Brazil joined the allies in WW2 that the government stated shutting down and distancing itself from the Japanese community. When the war ended, the Brazilian - Japanese relation slowly normalized and even more agreements were made, facilitating migration both ways. The problem is... The children (Nisseis) of the original immigrants (Nikeis) were taught about Japanese culture while living in Brazil, so a huge part never identified themselves as Brazilians. But in Japan, even the people who were born in Japan but moved to Brazil, like my father in law, weren't culturally accepted back by the society. So they kinda live in this cultural limbo where they don't feel and act like Brazilians, but also don't fit in Japanese societies. This lead to huge Brazilian enclaves in Japan, kinda mirroring history.

I find it interesting how Brazil's immigration is the opposite of the U.S: Non Europeans were the plurality in the beginning but increased dramatically in the 19th and 20th centuries, whilst for the U.S Europeans were the plurality in the beginning but then non Europeans arrived in waves in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Blanqueamiento ("branqueamento" in Portuguese) was circulated in national policy throughout Brazil in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.[9][10] Blanqueamiento policies emerged in the aftermath of the abolition of slavery and the beginning of Brazil's first republic (1888-1889). To dilute the black race, the Brazilian government took measures to increase European immigration.[9][11] More than 1 million Europeans arrived in São Paulo between 1890 and 1914.[12] State and federal governments funded and subsidized immigrant travels[11] from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Russia, Germany, Austria, France, and the Netherlands.[13] Claims that white blood would eventually eliminate black blood were found in accounts of immigration statistics.[13] Created in the late 19th century, Brazil's Directoria Geral de Estatística (DGE) has conducted demographic censuses and managed to measure the progress of whitening as successful in Brazil.[13] Wikipedia

I live in Orlando, FL, but you might as well call us "Little Brasilia", "Little Rio", "Little Recife", or "Little Sao Paulo". We have a very large, Brazilian community here. Brazilian style eateries has opened throughout Orlando and we also host a lot of visitors from Brazil. I work in the tourism industry and I see tons of Brazilian IDs and passports. I would venture to say that Orlando has the highest population of Brazilians outside of Brazil. That is the funny thing too, Brazilians love the theme parks.... Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld are all here. We know when it is summer in Brazil, they all flock here for winter in Orlando. Lol

The biggest Oktoberfest out of Germany is in Brazil. Egon Albrecht-Lemke was a Brazilian born ace fighter pilot who fought for Germany in WW2. Pomeranian dialect and traditions still live in the country of Brazil in a colony where the language is still spoken. The arrival of Pomerania immigrants with Germans and Italians helped form the state of Espírito Santo since the early 1930s. Their importance and respect are one of the cultural signatures of the area. The Brazilian city of Pomerode (in the state of Santa Catarina) was founded by Pomeranian Germans in 1861 and is considered the most typically German of all the German towns of southern Brazil. American Confederates migrated to Brazil after the US Civil War.
