The 1977 South African Grand Prix was the third round of the 1977 season of the Formula 1 World Championship. It took place on Saturday 5 March 1977 on the Kyalami circuit. The race was won by Austrian Niki Lauda in a Ferrari. He preceded Jody Scheckter in the Wolf-Ford Cosworth and Patrick Depailler in the Tyrrell-Ford Cosworth to the finish line.
The race was marred by the death of the race commissioner Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, hit by Tom Pryce's Shadow, who in turn was hit on the head by the fire extinguisher that the steward was carrying, also losing his life.

La gara fu funestata dalla morte del commissario di gara Frederik Jansen van Vuuren, investito dalla Shadow di Tom Pryce, che a sua volta fu colpito al capo dall'estintore che lo steward trasportava, perdendo anch'egli la vita.
