I've had several small snowfalls this season but not enough accumulation to warrant mounting the front snow blower on the kubota B2601 compact tractor. But with a lot of ice and several inches of snow, I need to get the driveway cleared for some friends coming over. Time to pull out the Landpride RB1672 rear blade to get the job done. The forest is beautiful after a fresh snowfall so come along for the ride today, up at the cottage, here in the outdoors. Merry Christmas!

GP...hey from Georgia US...that's one of those things I just don't get to do down here in the deep south of the US. Hasn't been a significant snowfall in 3 years. One of the only things I miss when I lived up in the New York area. SO beautiful. WAY impressed that you were in 2WD for that. I was sure you were in 4X4. Our little B series tractors are impressive! Maybe one day i can push some snow down here with the 2301. Just enough to play! Hopefully next year. We are due!

Nice to see you again on the snow removal. The camera never renders the beauty of a rising sun in a forest of trees loaded with dusty snow. It's comparable to a sky full of stars. That looks like a good improvement: pulling the back blade full of snow, driving uphill, while the base is ice... in 2wd! Thanks GP for sharing!

It's 60F here in southern Indiana, sunny -- great wood splitting weather. I remember 50 years ago, we'd be putting on warm clothes and be out on the hills sledding in 6-10" of snow during Christmas break until past dark. Be careful pushing snow off the side of the road -- it looks like a long walk back to the house. Happy New Year...

I was thinking about doing a pre-emptive video last year when you finally committed to purchasing a set of chains. That video was going to predict your reactions to using your tractor with chains in adverse conditions for the first time. And now I wish it had done it because I would've nailed it !!! You've now become one of the 'Enlightened" in the tractor community !! Before its over, may I predict that you may in fact utter the phrase: "I don't know how I did it without chains before". LOL. I loved watching you hit the hill the first time and you waltzed right up and over it and from what could be seen of the front wheels, I suspected you were in 2wd...then confirmed it there at the last. Great job with the various angles and up-close shots GP. You 'nailed it' too !! LOL.

If you drag your rear blade with the cutting edge opposite your direction of travel, you will leave your gravel and just take the snow. Also, I have a front mount snowplow blade, drop the bucket, put the plow on and your pushing snow. Just upgraded to the hydraulic controls last winter so I dont have to get off and adjust the angle anymore. Worth the cost.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Nice Jacob! I did try that opposite blade setup a couple of times and found the blade tended to ride up on the hard snow instead of plowing it at the ground. I do agree with you, the hydraulic assistance is so much better and worth the money instead of having to get on and off the machine to adjust things. Have a Happy New Year and thanks so much for watching!

It's interesting to note the type of tractor implements a person has is determined by where they live. Where I live you never see a snow blower and rarely see a tractor with tire chains. Just an observation. You truly live in a winter wonderland. It's beautiful. Have a great day.

That is what makes it difficult for folks to ask questions about what is needed because everyone is different. One person will say they have never needed chains and the next will say they can't even get out of the garage without chains. Until you have a couple winters under your belt it's difficult to know what will work best for your locale and conditions.

Greetings Gord, Lee here, yes, those type of chains work great, I'm a little envious of the snow you have, we have only an inch or so. I run with a back blade on in the winter also, great getting close to the steps and garage door. I have found that when plowing the first snow before I get a base formed over the lose gravel that if I turn the blade around 180 degrees and tilt the top of the blade toward the tractor it does not dig into the gravel and as the base gets thicker I start to tilt the top of the blade away from the tractor until the base is thick enough and then return it back the right way. It works quite well and you can even angle the blade right or left. I wish you and yours a magnificent new years. Later

Setting your rear blade height control to slightly unload the blade will give your rear tires more weight and better traction.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Don! I hope you had a good Christmas. By "slightly unload" the blade, do you mean by slightly lifting my blade out of the lowest position on my lever (handle on the fender), so it is slightly lifted but not off the ground? In other words, so the full weight of the blade is not resting on the ground? Thanks and have a Happy New Years!
@donbrutcher4501
@donbrutcher4501 4 жыл бұрын
@@GPOutdoors Thank you. Basically yes. If you then find your steering is too light, fill the loader bucket with snow. I would also set the rear tire pressure around 13 to 15 psi. Do Not reduce front tire settings from the factory recommendation!!! Keep a close eye on your tire pressure settings up there in the wild north. Cold temps can really drop pressures and you don't want to pop a bead on a sub zero F day

You make that rear blade look easy to plow with! I used it this season for the one small snowfall we got (about 6 cm), and I found out I’m not very good at it. I kept second guessing which way to plow with it. Pulling, pushing, angled... straight.... I’m so much more used to using the front end blower. I guess if I used the rear blade more, I’d get used to what works for my driveway. I’m very surprised to see how much more snow and cold you get in central Ontario compared to what we get in Nova Scotia. We normally have very little snow on the ground at Christmas, if any. This year we’ve had about 3 or 4 small snowfalls so far (about 5 cm or less, each). We’ve had enough melts and rain to melt it all. So we had a green Christmas. (See my video recorded Christmas Day from my New Mavic Mini drone) Nice scenery in your video as usual! Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

Good morning Andrew! I hope you and your family had a nice Christmas. Trust me - the hardest attachment I have tried to learn how to use is that rear blade. I enjoy how you are always making informative comments like why you hold off using the rear blade to plow snow. I wonder if a wheel kit on that blade would alleviate the problem with catching gravel. Thanks so much for the great feedback Allen. I am happy it is helpful. I think it would for sure but the main reason I use the blade through the winter is for scraping the driveway down bare, otherwise I usually just use the blower. After a while though, the base of snow builds up (and the blower skid shoes ride on the base) and it is good to blade the surface back down from time to time. Appreciate the suggestion though! All the best and thanks again!

I was looking for a blade for the rear of my B2650HSDC-TLB when I came across a "project blade". Now I am thinking I will put "Cat "0" pins and invert for my JD322. It is a 7' AARPS blade that had very little use but was nearly ripped in half. After about a week of spending time, it is all fixed and painted Kubota Orange. I do have a 63" snowblower too but after two years it still sits in the shed unused. The 72" blade is mounted on the FEL instead of the same tongue mount as the snowblower which I didn't realize when I purchased the tractor and implements. Surely it would have been easier to have the blade use the same tongue mount as the blower versus removing the FEL to mount snowblower. My first time using the FEL to plow snow, somewhat of a learning curve with tail weight and angle of plow edge. I do have 3rd function on this FEL as blade has hydraulics. I do remove the BH77 backhoe and put on a 3 point hitch ballast box and found out that "zero" weight works best with plowing with FEL blade. This year I had the rear tires filled but still deciding on chains and if so, what style. I do like your style of chains but don't think V-Bar would work as well on the blacktop. Thinking maybe just a crosslink chain instead for the B2650. I run R4 tires on this unit and at present, all I plow on is blacktop, except for one neighbor who has a stone driveway. Rain next few days instead of snow here in New Tripoli Pennsylvania.

I see someone said to turn the blade around. they are right that it will not pick up as many stone but it will pack the snow under the tractor. I just push going backwards with the back of the blade set on an angle. Two passes out and back clears my 1/2 mile drive and the wife is HAPPY. Also play with the third arm length.

Good morning and thanks for sharing the idea Thomas. I have tried with it reversed but it does just as you said - kind of piles the snow up and because it is not too heavy, it tends to float over the snow a lot. I might give your way a try though. I have not done it that way before, Thank again and Happy New Years!

New subscriber, great content here. I'm south of you in New Hampshire and run a 68" MK Martin Meteor 3 point hitch pull type snowblower. I have the same chains as you on my tractors. Both of them are 2WD without diff locks so my guess is you'll hardly ever need 4WD with those chains on.

Good morning and welcome Dave! Thanks! Great to hear about how the chains are working out for you - very helpful to know. Would that blower be called an "Inverted" blower? It blows while you drive forward? If so, how do you like it, if I may ask? I had another subscriber asking about them about a week ago. Thanks and Happy New Years!
@davem4193
@davem4193 4 жыл бұрын
@@GPOutdoors thanks! Yes, the blower is an inverted snowblower. MK Martin calls it a "pull type" but it's an inverted snowblower. I absolutely love it, I've had it for a couple years now. I highly recommend them to people who are considering a 3 point hitch snowblower. The biggest advantage to an inverted is you just drive forward, no sore neck like a standard rear mount. Another advantage is you never get snow in your face on a windy day like you do with a front mount. It is also very nimble, I can snowblow tight spaces with it. The only disadvantage it has compared to a front mount or standard rear mount is if you have large snow drifts to deal with. In my case I'm surrounded by woods so I don't get a lot of drifting. Another plus to the inverted is if you have a tractor without live PTO it works better for that application. I found your channel researching Land Pride spreaders, I'm hoping to get a spreader for my next implement. I have a hilly driveway and it was scary going down this morning. You did a great job with your spreader videos.

What a beautiful day in the woods, GP! You added a lot of nice close-ups shots, very cool! Just wondering, are you reluctant to use 4WD because the rear tires are now a different diameter with the chains on? Or are you testing the effectiveness of the chains? They seem to be doing the job! We have had several days of near freezing temps here in East Central MN, the snow has turned a bit slushy. When it re-freezes, it is going to be tough gong! Happy 2020! Cheers!

Merry Christmas Michael! For now, I'm looking to see how well the chains work without assistance, in different scenarios. I want to push them first, for a while. Then, I will definitely use the 4WD (despite the concerns) to see how different it is. But for now, I need to build a baseline on the chains alone. And so far, what a world of difference. Not sure I will need the 4WD but stay tuned as the winter continues. I am pretty shocked to be honest. I didn't realize how well a good set of chains would work. Happy New Years to you and the family!

Good morning Sydnick. Thanks for sharing your setup - sounds like it works great. My challenge here is the driveway is cut close into the forest and is about 1 mile long. There is nowhere to push the snow. And to be honest, I tried a rear blower and my back and neck can't take the twisting for that long. LOL. Blower was the only way to go for me. You would have to drill holes in the blade for them... But if you find it digging up a lot of gravel a set of skid shoes does wonders for avoiding that issue. We used to push back over a lawn with a rear blade with them on and it tore up very little lawn. Also keep meaning to ask... Part of the way up the driveway it looks like there is another path coming off it or is it just a odd twist to it?

Good day MM. You are absolutely correct. I only use the blade when I need to scrape and seldom with the blade to the sides of the driveway (you may have noticed a few segments where the blade is pushing to the middle of the driveway, and then I pass back with the blower afterwards). I had to get the blower for that reason. When I used to have people plowing the driveway, it would get too narrow to drive through by mid winter so I knew I had to buy a blower. Thanks for watching and for the good question. Cheers!

How come people in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc have a ton of great property cheap and in Calif, you have to be a millionaire to buy anything over 1/2 ac. Ridiculous. How's property values in Ontario? I want to thank you Gord for that great explanation on the concession roads. Kinda sounds like what we in Calif call County roads. Hope you had a great Xmas with your family. Did your daughter come up from Socal for Xmas? The property sure looks nice in white. I remember back in the 70's when I was in the Diablo 4 Wheelers, we used to go up around Tahoe for the Kids Xmas Run. Good morning Tim and hope you had a great Christmas. LOL. True. Kind of funny about land. Land prices way up here are not unreasonable where I am, but certainly much more than I paid many years ago for this property ( which is good for me). Sadly, no. She was not able to get away so it was the first Christmas without her. Carol was pretty sad as you can imagine (ok, I was a bit too). But she is able to get home in about two weeks so we are leaving the tree up and the lights outside for when she comes and Carol is going to make a second Christmas for us when she gets home. Tough as they start to get older but will be great to have her home soon for a little bit. Thanks for asking Tim. Wish you all the best for the New Year!

@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good day Sunjay. I don't use skid shoes on the blade. But yes, I usually have it in float - I only use it after the ground has frozen hard. At 285 lbs, it does not dig into the ice too much, so I seldom pull up gravel. If I used it before the ground was frozen, then I would definitely be pulling up gravel. Hope that helps. Happy 4th of July weekend!
@eosjoe565
@eosjoe565 4 жыл бұрын
Wow... I can only dream of the ground being frozen like that. I have the same LP RB16xx rear blade and have to use it pushing backwards against the curve of the blade. If I were to go forward I would gather up huge piles of gravel no matter how my top link was adjusted. The last couple winters our gravel just has never had a chance to freeze. We get cold weather and then it warms just enough to thaw the ground a bit. By the way, do you know you can get a factory hydraulic angle kit for that RB1672 blade? I have one on mine and it has been a game changer in the way you can manipulate the blade from the seat. No more hopping on and off the tractor to change blade angles.
@GPOutdoors

Hey good evening Joe! Yes, I heard about the hydraulic angle kit and sometimes I wish I had it, as it would be so much easier to use it. I didn't get remotes on the tractor when I bought it, but wish I had now for sure. Have a Happy New Years and all the best to you and your family Joe!

So GP let me twist your ear on an idea. What if you built a set of tail wheels go behind the blade? That way you could keep the cutting edge of the blade off the ground and not worry about gouging the surface.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Jeremy! An interesting thought. I could do that. I also found out from my dealer that I could get a pair of skid shoes for it as well but I think I would need to weld them or bolt them on. A good idea I think if it were something I needed regularly but once the ground gets a good freeze into it, I don't really rip up much gravel to speak of. It's really just at the beginning of winter that is the challenge. Interesting idea though - thanks! Hope you have a Happy New Years and all the best for 2020 Jeremy!
