WHY? WHY? WHY? Why do manufacturers risk owner safety? I've never understood why manufacturers started eliminating spare tires in new cars. Actually, that's not true, it's because they are trying to save a buck. But a tire inflator can't inflate a tire when it had a blow out and I've seen a lot of people that it happened too. I also take road trips and I travel back roads where I don't have cell service so a spare tire is a must. If you have any questions or comments on what I did or how I did it please post below. I'll also leave links for the products for anyone interested in doing this.

Someone within the GRC community should start making foam with a cutout for a spare tire sort of like SXTH Element did with the center armrest.

Yep, it should have at least been an option as there is room. They could have made a foam piece similar to one that I cut out, would that have been so hard?

Indeed I am, so I have to be prepared! And then I continue on through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and back home to WA State! It's going to be a fun road trip. 😍

So what size tire/wheel is on your GR? Then, what size/type wheel tire did u USE as a spare? U mentioned a "donut" but how/where? Professionally done! 👍 I have mixed emotions on HAVING a spare. ALL my other Toyotas I've owned over decades, I've NEVER had to use my spares (they were all like new). But just knowing u HAVE a spare, gives u security.

I have 235/40R18 tires and the spare is a 135/70R18 which is the same diameter. The links for the tire options are in the description below the video. I've had to use my spare twice over the years but you are right, just knowing you have one is a huge peace of mind. I travel in a lot of areas that don't have cell service so a spare tire is a must. A spare tire is like a gun or condom, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have one! 🤣🤣🤣

what do you mean drill out a hole for the D ring? you mean you drilled into the car? Also do you have a part number/link for the bolt you use for your D-ring? For the wheel/tire, I would probably install it faceside up for your structural support. Put your tool bag under the wheel since the gap will be there now.

If the D-ring hole is too small for the bolt you might have to drill out the hole a little to make it big enough for the bolt to slip through, if it's big enough you are good to go. I tried the wheel the other way but it's much easier to put the wheel in upside down and fit the tool bag in. When having to lift the wheel and stuff the tool bag under it, it's more of a PITA. Plus when the strap is on it won't rub the wheel paint in any way. Others have found this way to work better too.

Does anyone know the allowed difference in diameter between tires on our car? I have aftermarket wheel/tires, 25.3" diameter, this 135/70 spare is 25.5". Thankd for the helpful video. Ive been pretty nervousr driving this car without a spare.

I've been trying to find a definitive answer to that same question myself. I went with this size because my sock 235/40R18 is 25.4" in diameter and this 135/70R18 is the exact same diameter. At some point I wouldn't mind going to a 245/40R18 but the diameter is 25.7" making this spare 1.2% smaller. I'm not sure if that is within the range of being okay or not but I keep looking for an answer. At least this is the exact same size for now so no worries for now.

I'm running 265/35 at 25.3 dia and online calc says 135/40 is 25.5 so was hoping it close enough. I think it's only a 0.8% diff in dia. I've read up to 3% is ok on some AWD systems. I would guess we could look up other Toyota AWD cars and see what they run for spares, but I fear they also don't have spares but these dumb slime kits. I'm likely to grab a plug kit in the meantime. @@LifeSOSlive When I just looked it up it shows me the 265/35R18 is 25.3" and the 135/70R18 spare is 25.4" so the spare is only 0.4% larger so I would think that would be within any tolerance.

Aahh yes! I used a diff calculator and got your same measurements! In think you're likely right, that's much less than 1% dia difference so I would hope that's ok. @@jimsgaragetoys

Yes, I bought a Modern Spare. I left all 3 options with links in the description below the video. Just click on the "more" to expand it. You can by the tire/wheel only, or with the tools, or also add a bag as you will see. There are also the same 3 choices with a steel wheel for less money.

And that is also an option. The new options range from $239 to $469 but keep in mind the most expensive package has all the tools and a bag for the tire. I didn't buy the bag for the tire and most don't which brings the price dow to $409. Some may buy the tool kit and you are already $90 less than you quoted so it's not as bad as you are thinking. And if you are a Prime member with an Amazon Visa you save an additional 5%. 😉
