This video is an excellent resource for grab bar installation. I just installed two(2) Moen grab bars at my in-law's. Both were 18" bars. One was installed vertically with the Moen Secure Mount Anchors. The other was installed in the tub on the studs. If you install an 18" grab bar on a diagonal, you can catch the two adjoining studs 16" on center. I found the Secure Mount Anchors easier to install than the stud option. These Moen Products were high quality, sturdy, and easy to install. I would highly recommend them to anyone contemplating a grab bar install.

Only install to studs. The plastic anchors will withstand downward pull but not repeated pulls horizontally. Eventually they will pull through the wall. This is especially true when the anchor hole exposes the drywall to moisture.

The only thing I don’t agree with is not using a silicone when going through the tile. Definitely recommend some sort of an adhesive or silicone.

Why don’t they make grab bars 16” or 32” long so BOTH ends are anchored to studs?

These videos are good, but not one has addressed the problem of when the wall behind it is an outside concrete wall. I had to find out the hard way on my own. When your wall behind you tile is an outside wall, it will not be a hollow wall, which all these spread apart anchors are made for. No matter how deep you drill, you will not be able to hook up any anchor that has to spread out behind the wall. You have to use plugs, plastic or metal. And make sure the screws are stainless steel, or else they will start rusting in and outside of the wall, with orange seeping down.

Or you could forget the stud finder and drill just where you want.If you hit a stud, lucky you. If not, use a 2-pack of purchase some of Lowe's snap togglers (238 lbs. each in 1/2" drywall). Been using them on our local department on aging grab bar installations for the past 15 yrs. Just be sure to start with a 1/8" exploratory hole into which you can use a bent wire to check depth and/or any nearby hidden obstacles. If there's a "challenge", the small hole size gives you some "wiggle-room" for your plan B. And always caulk the top half of the collar.

Great Video! I am trying to install a vertical grab bar beside my shower and tub. There is pine wood trim from top of the wall to the bottom. There is also pine wood trim from top to bottom on the side of the same trim. The screws included are the size needed to go through both trims. The problem is that the trim is 2 1/4 " wide and the flange of the bar is 3 " round. The flange hangs over, beside the trim. Only the 2 screws on the side of the flange will go through the wood. Not the 3rd one. Will 2 screws on the sides of both flanges be enough to hold me up. I am 170 pounds. I actually stand up and use the bar for support after showering. I do not pull on it much; just steady myself with it. Also, I put polyurethane on the wood. Will the wood eventually rot? It is outside of the shower curtain, and I try to pull the curtain so the trim will not get wet. Do I need to caulk the flange? Do I need to order a skinny grab bar with a smaller flange? I am a grandma and only have installed the accessories, like the towel bar in the bath. The set screws were a B---. I have arthritis and have a hard time bending over and getting up from the tub. Can I do this myself? Also---GREAT IDEAS for the tub and toilet. These things really help, as I am just now needing help in and out of the tub. I already have the white grab bar screwed on the tub, but it is not enough, to get up and out of tub. My arms are not strong enough to pull me up .Thanks!

I'm fairly certain plumber's putty should have been applied between the fixture plate and the tile as well as inside the cover plate when installed in the shower area.

So how do you install one or more to the walls of a one piece fiberglass tub and shower enclosure? That may well have been what Louise was asking about.

What if you're installing into tile covered concrete block or plaster? All my walls are concrete block and plaster (or tile in the bathrooms)

Nothing short of a ledger plate behind the tile works. Would a licensed contractor bet his license against a 200lb + pull on a bar attached to tile, ah no! Open the wall behind the location of the bar and install either a 2X6", 2X8" or better yet, install these during original construction.

Can you post a video on how to use the drill bit? What brand did you recommend? How did you put it together to begin drilling? etc...
