@@kyachdistent1301 how right you are, a quantity of gems were there in plein sight, but the majority loved trash. I think 1984 was the year rubbish took over. By the way this is a superlative cover from Roxy Music - Brian Ferry 1975 and yes, I was there.
@kyachdistent1301 Жыл бұрын
@@paolo3087 Yep, but I wouldn't say 1984. Granted slagdonna, worst plague of the world allowed to appear and stay, but that bas**** from hell began it's evil dominion truly by 1985, also Pete Waterman's scourge on music appeared, so between these two, no wonder things went truly south by 1988 (the year we could all tell we were in trouble). In all fairness though, there was crap around every year of the 80s but it never took over. Plenty of good people making records in 1984, with some cool ones still not appearing yet, but many of the best are always making albums and songs that get little attention from the mainstream. The so-called Top 40 of TOTP is not a proper representation of proper music of the 80s, nor is any radio station when it pretends to cater for it. 1984 brought us Alphaville, one of the best acts around, but as Germans, never given a fair crack of the whip, same with Sandra for the next year. 1990 was the year it became clear music had died. Then when things didn't so much as change or even stay the awful same when the millennium came but got even WORSE, well. It's no wonder we all go back to live our lives audibly in the past music-wise.

Daniel Latham I think Gaga is a reliable substitute, but reliable isn't what you should try to be if you're a musician trying to do "art pop". Bowie, Kate Bush and Grace Jones kind went in a much less linear direction. I don't dislike Gaga, but I would rather Jones to her.

If you caught a live performance by Grace Jones in the early 1980s, you literally entered the future. She put a performance together that was a mix of fashion show, dub music, performance art, and live vocals. Every song had a different set, different look, and visual effect. Of course, it helped she had some of the best musicians money could buy on her recorded instrumental track, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. And, for good measure, Chris Blackwell did his mixing magic. Grace Jones was underrated then and is surely way underrated now. You can't overstate her influence on her contemporaries at the time.

Grace Jones recorded "Love Is the Drug" on her Warm Leatherette album from 1980. The track was released as the second single, following "A Rolling Stone" in the UK while it was the first single to be released in Germany. After failing to chart in 1980, a remix of the Grace Jones version was released in 1986 following the 1985 compilation Island Life and then became a minor hit in the UK, peaking at no. 35.
