Gracie Slick is special as the lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane now called Starship, she is unquestionably one of the queens of rock music. I guess because at a time they were both in San Francisco, who were both women singing lead in top rock and roll bands. The comparison between her and Janis were very much in vogue before Janis died. Now as not only a great artist in her own right, but also someone who managed to live through the insanity of the rock world in the late 60’s, she’s uniquely qualified to talk about it.
Good Night America: Season 1; #3
Episode; Hard Rockers, Hard Drugs
Air Date: May 1st, 1974

When I was sixteen, I attended a rock concert in Providence, RI around 1967. Jefferson Airplane concert. The opening band was playing. I was stage left to check out amps. And suddenly a woman about 5'4" emerged from the wings. Blue eyes, dark hair, pretty. She smiled, and we danced together to the music for a song or two. Then, Gracie smiled and kissed me! "Gotta' go!" She could not see me blush in the darkness. The funny thing - I did not recognize her until she took the stage. Sweet memory!

I grew up in Southern California as a teenager in Newport Beach in the’60’s. I was able to see quite a number of the bands from that era. Saw Jefferson Airplane twice then, so amazing. Most of the bands then were fun - some good, some not so much. It was so cool to be able to hear White Rabbit 🐇 or Somebody to Love with the band rocking along and her foghorn of a voice. I’ve met Grace twice. Each time she was gracious, interesting and well informed-she’s thought about or read about just about anything you could ask her. Glad she quit all the drinking and the drugs -she’s still around because of a healthier lifestyle.

The first time that I smoked marijuana was when my brother; who worked for Bill Graham Productions, introduced me to Darby Slick; Grace's brother, in Golden Gate Park. I had just returned from the Vietnam War and was just 2 months into being a "civilian" again. I knew nothing about how to smoke it, what I would experience, etc. ... but Darby was a "professional coach" and gave me a perfect orientation on "How To Smoke A Joint".

I live in Fort Worth, Texas and so back in 1978-1979 I was a waiter and musician so I basically worked at night. Back then Charlie Rose, when he was just starting out, had a talk show on a local television station here, NBC, that got taped around nine in the morning. Anyways if you showed up early at the station back in those days you could be in the audience and participate in the show, it was set up exactly like the Phil Donahue Show. I got to be a regular, did this for almost a year, it was a lot fun! Anyways, one time back in 79 Grace Slick was the guest and it was one of the best shows I ever experienced and even after the show I got to hang around and have a conversation with her for 15 minutes or so. She was awesome, pretty, funny, smart and so down to earth, a great experience and memory! What you see here is who she is, genuine!

The media and those that own it wanted to get rid of the ideas of the 60s DURING the 60s while it was happening, so in every way possible after the 60s, they treated those years as if they never had happened. That's how much of a threat we were to the establishment, that the media lied about us during the 60s, and on every available occasion thereafter. So, it's no wonder that only 5 years later (1974) Geraldo is treating the 60s as if it were merely some kind of fantasy dream. And it's not an odd thing to notice. The media, and government, has proceeded to hide and lie about everything that happened, and the reasons they happened, since the 60s. It's obvious to anyone in their right mind.

GRACE......HATED THAT SONG! By the time it happened...I think she said she wanted to puke or something. Paul had already departed the band and had sued . Personally I thought it was complete pop trash. It was not ..Ummm .... GENUINE.

I was turning six years old and in kindergarten, back in 1970. If you asked a kid, growing up in the 1970's, who Jefferson Airplane was, they would have no idea. Jefferson Starship?? Oh, hell yeah! But, with Jefferson Starship, they should have let Grace Slick do more. She was the most talented singer in that group. Had they let her sing a few songs, they would have had a few more hits, and they would be evergreen, today.

@@baneverything5580there have always been plenty of artists/performers who don’t do well in live shows. There are a lot of different reasons for a poor quality live performance, even shows that are partially choreographed, and carefully stage managed can be ruined due to a number of factors and unforeseen circumstances. Doesn’t necessarily mean Grace Slick, or any other artist who sucks at giving live shows aren’t talented or can’t create exceptional, quality work. Human beings are flawed, and sometimes in ways that aren’t so obvious to anyone else. Grace Slick is still an amazing singer and has a legacy because of it, and as an Audio Engineer, the analog recording technology (which was the industry standard when Jefferson Airplane made their most famous recordings) that was utilized by the recording studios in the hippie-era wouldn’t have magically turned a bad singer into a good one. Auto-tune and ProTools weren’t a thing back then, and making an album was a much more tedious, and labor intensive process. You couldn’t really fake it without someone eventually finding out the truth, eventually ending in your career in disgrace.

I would NEVER use auto tune unless I was doing a comedy show. I`ve stopped performing because of rude audiences jabbering and shoving cell phones in my face and disrupting every performance with ridiculous song requests. I get so angry about it that I`ve turned into Mr Jerk and just cannot tolerate any of it now. It`s pointless to try. I`m sitting in a room now with some amazing equipment I can no longer use for its intended purpose. @@Pretermit_Sound

Grace Slick is a really talented, cool, and genuine person. I really admire her. She eluded to her having an addictive personality and I totally can relate. Grace did go through a bad period with Alcohol when she was Starship for a time. She od'd in Germany and started Goose-Stepping on stage, and the crowd went crazy-angry so much that Paul Kantner sacked her. Very sad and I'm so glad she broke through that Booze Ceiling to come out the other side. She's got guts, brains, talent and beauty. What a woman. Go Grace Go.
