I listened to this song after not hearing it in a while and this made me tear up🥺 Grace is so beyond talented. She shined so bright on America's Got Talent and she has come so far at such a young age. Her voice is so unique and powerful, it gives me chills. And those little breaks/cracks in her voice omg! I wish I was versed in musical theory, because I'm telling you, this song is not as simple as it might seem. There is a powerfully gifted artist at work. Grace has crafted I Don't Know My Name to be both mournful and aspirational, bouncy and sing-along with hushed reverence intermingled. It has all the contradictions of youth built into the melody. Add to that the incredibly personal lyrics that young and old can relate to, and it elicits a very deep personal reaction, in almost everyone. But Grace IS this song. Her voice and the image of her audition are playing back in my mind whenever I hear this. As it's playing now (while I type) I'm thinking that, as the song ends, she has taken her audience on a journey with her. The story caries her, and us, through a shared experience of uncertainty, discovery and self realization. It's amazing - she's amazing.

It is truly amazing and remarkable even unimaginable that a 10-12 year old was able to write such unique and powerful song. I don’t know all the technical terms for all the things in this song that blow me away but their are so many. Not just for the obvious reasons like Grace’s voice and the amazing lyrics. Those two things are great, but it’s all the other things that really amaze me. From the delivery of the lyrics to the pace changes in the music. It’s truly brilliant on every level and there are many many levels.

My friend and i were so inspired by this song that we bought ukuleles, learnt the song, and then went busking around our suburb. We performed in music classes, in our own and others (the year 5s, 4s, 3s, 2s, 1s, and pre-primarys), in front of our school, and on the radio. Grace you are amazing and both me and my friend want to be such talented musicians like you. I have tried to write my own two songs but they will never be as good as yours. I have a story to tell. I’m a teenage girl who loves to sing and write songs. I think I was around seven when I actually wrote down the lyrics to my first song. The more I would write and sing, the more confident I would become in my singing. My parents have always supported my songwriting and the people that knew that I wrote my own songs always found it very impressive that I would write songs at such a young age. That led me to believe that I had the potential to become an amazing artist. Then, I was watching TV one night, and at 8 I discovered Grace VanderWaal. I was so intrigued and inspired at the same time. When I realized that she was the girl that won America’s Got Talent, I decided to check out her channel. It was all original songs. Everybody was shocked that a young girl was already writing such beautiful original material at 12. It gave me so much confidence because my brain initially thought “ but I can write songs at eight, i’m so cool!” Then, I looked back at my song. It turned out to look absolutely horrible in comparison. Soon enough, I became obsessed with Grace and started to analyze her songwriting process to try and write an original piece with her exact songwriting process. I even did impressions of her. That way I felt like people could finally see the other side of me. I felt like the fact that I could impersonate another singer would make people more impressed with my knowledge of music. That day, my dad came in the room, sat down with me, and asked me, “ why are you choosing to do this?” I explained why, and he said, “you really don’t need to. You’re perfect the way you are.” That made me realize that I didn’t need to be like anybody else. I felt like I *finally knew my name.* Since that moment, I have still written loads of songs and continued my singing hobby. I do sometimes look back at my old songs and reminisce about how childish and silly they seem, but that’s okay. I’m now going into high school and I can proudly say Grace has been a huge inspiration for me.

You have honored her singular vocal style and allowed the pacing and melody to flow as Grace intended it, ending beautifully with the orchestral accompaniment. Grace, please don't ever stop making music. You are a beautiful light shining on a world with many shadows. For some people music is background noise. For others, it's as vital as the air we breathe; the soundtrack to our lives; what conjures the most intense emotions. I believe you already know that, and have for quite some time. Songs "from my heart", you have said on several occasions. "From your heart" means something special, when it's coming from you! I shall now wait impatiently, till the full album is playing on perpetual repeat, on my funky old CD player, and blasting out of my speakers - filling the house with beautiful music. Hi Grace, This is the first time I have heard the studio version. Of course I fell in love with your audition version. I had got out of the habit of watching AGT and wasn't even going to watch this season. I recorded the 2nd episode of the season and was fast forwarding through most of the acts until this young lady came out with a ukulele in hand. I have watched so many young ladies before trying to get their break singing covers and trying to sound like so many singers before them. I couldn't bare the thought of seeing another broken heart get their hopes and dreams dashed so I almost fast forwarded again. But when Howie said "you're a beautiful young lady do you know that" your response with that witty "why thank you" was gold. My attention was held up to when Simon said "do you think you can win" of course your response "miracles can happen, so possibly" will go down in history. At this point of time not in my wildest imagination did I think it could possibly happen. No one this young had won in ten years and no one certainly had won singing an original. It just wasn't going to happen. But I had to watch thinking how sad I was going to feel seeing another broken heart going home with her hopes dashed. Then the first words came out "I don't know my name". I sat there nervous and anxious waiting and then the final. When I heard "I now know my name" with the power and feeling I haven't ever seen on AGT or anywhere else I can remember I knew I was witnessing a star in the making right before my very eyes. Sorry to be so windy but I was leading up to how much I loved your audition version and it will always hold a place in my heart. That being said your studio version is a little different but is just as great and I couldn't be happier. I know you worked hard on it and you should be very proud. I know I am.
