To me Family Champion = Family Ambassador in today's terms. As Kama JJ teaches, Gracie JJ is a self defense art and that message holds primacy and still needs to be spread....ironically INSIDE the Jiu Jitsu world as well as outside. That said, I see Ryron and Rener as the primary voices of that message for the foreseeable future. They deferred on what could've been successful fighting careers in order to spread the art, particularly its self defense efficacy for everyday people.

+JiuJitsu Brasileño Y Defensa Personal SNG, thank you. I know they haven't trained. It was just someone saying Roger is the best ever based on him winning championships. But many say Ryron can also be considered the best. My question was, have Ryron and Roger ever fought for the family championship behind closed doors to determine who's better (no). They are about the same age and the same size. Hard to know who "the best" is without two of the top of their generation coming together to train, no? Just because someone beat someone means nothing. Styles match. In jiu-jitsu, just because A beats B, and B beats C, doesn't mean A beats C, is all I'm saying. Whereas in the old days, it was easy for Carlos, Sr and Helio to determine who the family champion was. It's impossible today.

Very good video! I totally agree with you, the expression "Family champion" applies correctly for the fighters mentioned. But it is worth mentioning that Royler, for a period of time (not short!) was the only Gracie competing. Also, Royler "crossed" generations of fighters (adversaries) being champion of his division, that is unprecedented. To be specific, Royler fought with early Carlson Gracie students like Cassio Cardozo and Peixotinho, then with De La Riva, to the point he fought with Amaury Biteti (I could go on with Abu Dabi - ADCC). Royler not only is a one of most technical fighters in the family, but he is also one of the most competitive. Regards from Brazil.

@bjjdad4
@bjjdad4 6 жыл бұрын
I have much respect for Rickson, but if you TRULY interview many of the Old-School Gracies and their practitioners, they say Rolls was the best and yes, Rickson was catching up, he never surpassed Rolls. Of course Rickson will say he beat Rolls, but even Helio has said Rickson has always embellished his wins--and we know Helio thought his sons were "invincible"! Looking at the video, it is obvious Rickson is at LEAST in his 20s, and considering how good everyone says he was (which is truth), the video shows just how good Rolls was because he was superior in every aspect during the match. Roger is obviously the family champion, and he is very "old-school" in his technique, but you want to include Rorion's children just to keep Helio's line going and not give credit to someone in Carlos' lineage being the champion again. Yes, more Gracies "fought" real fights, but they did tournaments as well, and Rolls, Rickson, Royler and Relson dominated that scene. Rorion's sons did tournaments as well early on, and they were very successful, but not nearly as successful as Roger. Give credit where credit is due, and don't disparage Carlos' line because you favor Helio.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 6 жыл бұрын

@duncansutherland47

Sonny Mercado....in the video you are referencing Rickson is in his late teens. Rolls was still well ahead of him. It makes sense that he caught up, however. All of what is mentioned here can't be proved and is purely speculation on both sides of the debate. We do have ample evidence of Rickson's prowess in and out of the ring. Rolls apparently recommended to Helio that Rickson fight Zulu. It does "appear" that the torch was being passed. They all loved Rolls and respected him immensely. There are intense loyalties that come into play with regards to this topic now. Rolls was a uniting energy in the Gracie family that is fractured in some ways. This question will never be fully answered. There is a great pod cast that is on Grappling Central that honors Rolls by some of the Gracie family members (on both sides) and a few of the famous five black belts He created.
@phuckfumassters
@phuckfumassters Жыл бұрын
The video your referencing Rickson was a teenager maybe 16 or 17 and Rolls was 23 or 24. That's a huge difference in physical prowess at that age range. It's not a fair assessment of Rickson until he is 21 to have him go against a 27 or 28 yrs old Rolls. That would be more fair of Rickson since he would be an adult at that point.

i knew/trained with all of them AT THE TIME. no way, Royce was ever the "family champion." Royce was put into the UFC because Rorion was "saving" Rickson, should Royce have lost in the inaugural event. Black Belt Magazine came out in an interview and asked him about what it was like being the "family champion." Royce said (and i'm paraphrasing here), "i'm not the family champion. my brother Rickson plays with me." as great as Royce is/was, absolutely no one in the Gracie family thought him to be even "a" family champion let alone "the" family champion.

Rolls was raised by Helio because Carlos Sr’s (2nd) wife didn’t want to raise a son who wasn’t hers (supposedly). Since Margarida was not able to have children herself, she was happy to entertain Helio’s idea of adopting and raising Rolls. The son (Helio’s “natural born”) Helio was purported to favor over Rolls was not Rickson (who is several years younger), but RORION (who is the son of Helio and Belinda), who was also raised by Margarida.

I disagree - George was the 1st Champion. He was putting the Gracie name out there long before Helio did. His Techniques were by far more refined than that of Helio and Carlos because he tested it in Vale Tudo (Not to mention George's students would beat Helio's students in fights - Most famously Nahum Rabay beating the heavy favourite - a much bigger & more experienced Guanair Vial who would later leave Helio's camp to join George's camp and be known as the one of the 1st, if not the 1st case of "creontagem" known to the Jiujitsu world). When Carlos was teaching the brothers Jiujitsu, Oswaldo and George were two of the standouts at the First Gracie Academy. George never cared for Carlos's goals for Jiujitsu and lifestyle such as the "Gracie Diet' which strained his relationship with Carlos which Carlos was very vocal about. In reply to one of Carlos's public criticism about him, George said: “My brother Carlos is nothing when it comes to fighting. Carlos does not have the authority nor the competence to speak about Jiu Jitsu… Who created the sporting tradition of my family if not me, in all honesty, with my career?” Carlos and Helio would have never admitted it at that time given their strained relationship that their brother, George was by far more technical than they were as they passed on every challenged issued to fight George stating publicly that George wasn't a representative of the Gracie Family and forbidding George to use the "Gracie" name when he decided to open an academy later in Rio and charging alot less than what Helio was charging at his academy.

RXN NRK I agree George was the toughest and the champion among the family and brothers.I still feel the idea of George fighting his brothers though should never happen, as I am positive whoever was the promoter was pure scum in trying to get family members to fight against one another. Carlos came out with nice ideas, but he did not seem to be the fighter of the family. His diet is pretty nice though. George was considered open minded about using other arts also. I have talked to people who are GJJ enthusiasts and man, do they ever think if anything is outside of Helio's teachings, then it is blasphemy. Somewhat cultish really.
@KamaJiuJitsu
@KamaJiuJitsu 6 жыл бұрын
Carlos definitely fought, but once it got to where his brothers could fight, he likely decided he'd had enough. we all reach that point, some earlier than others. From the stories i've (Ryan) heard about george, i tend to not think much of george as a person, although during his time, he was undoubtedly a great fighter. then again, maybe Carlos, Sr's personality pushed George away. but when you think about it, among any family with numerous family members like the Gracies, it's not uncommon for one family member to harbor jealousy for another family member's achievements and work to undermine that family member through various means. the "cultish" behavior happens on both sides, but actual animosity does seem to flow more from Carlos, Sr's side to Helio's side vs Helio's side to Carlos, Sr's side, imho.

In the documentary video produced by Renzo, there is footage of Rickson and Rolls sparring. The date of the footage is 1976. Rolls appeared to be bigger than Rickson. But as Rickson mature I think he was bigger than Rolls by at least 20 lbs. I don't think Rolls was as small as 145 lbs. In Relia's book, she described Rolls as weighing about 160 give or take 5 lbs. Rickson weighed about 180 lb as he matured. Rickson stated on the Joe Rogan show that he submitted Rolls once. He said it was a turning point in his life and in his relationship with Rolls. In the interview with Rogan Rickson said he got better and more mature as a fighter over time and the tables turned. There is a great pod cast honoring Rolls's life that includes some of his black belts and family members. In that pod cast Royler said Rolls was offered to fight Zulu but said it should be Rickson to do it. He told Helio to have Rickson do it. At the time Rolls had a tremendous influence on both sides of the family. He was the champion and he was the uniter of the clan. Things changed after he died.

Ezequiel Lima that's not entirely true. Rickson said he never altered his Jiu-Jitsu because of other art's. He did other arts to learn how to adapt what he already knew to defeat them. He didn't add other martial art's to his arsenal. His Jiu-Jitsu is all Helio Gracie. For example if when he fought in a Sambo competition he was doing Jiu-Jitsu but adapted it for the rules required for that art in that environment. In interviews he also gives credit to his brother Rorion who is a very gifted teacher as well. He wasn't a family champion, however. His talents apparently are in disseminating the important details of the Jiu-Jitsu he learned from his father. In every interview I have heard where this question was asked that is the response "Rickson" has given and not what others have speculated.

what does competition have to do with anything? i could never understand why so many from the new school think so much of someone's competition record? well, i guess i can see it. i guess it's the term "world champion" that gets me. given how thick the rulebook is these days (can't slam, can't neck crank, can't reap in a footlock, etc, etc), i can't see how today's jiu-jitsu resembles yesterday's jiu-jitsu in any way. yes, i know Rickson followed Rolls. my question was, if Rickson was the best champion of all time, who is the next best? i didn't mean next in chronological order. if chronological, Roger would definitely be a contender for that title... if IBJJF contests are the sole criteria for consideration.

Rickson had passed Rolls by the time Rixson was 16-17. Rickson always bowed out to Rolls. He hid the fact that he could beat him.

If there weren’t anymore champions then why did Royce represent the family in the UFC?

Because Rorion was saving RICKSON in case Royce didn’t do as expected.

I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have fought with the rule changes that came in once they (UFC) began to bend to the rules of the state boxing commissions.

What this video doesn't mention about helio gracie was that he ambushed a fighter that he lost to with others by tieing the victim up then breaking he's bones so badly it he(the victim) needed career ending surgery which left the victim crippled . Unfortunately this violence happened 3 times to different fighters and he was jailed subsequently he was released because of he's influence. He was also known to favor teaching wealthier white students and was against teaching female self defense. When comparing the accomplishments of helio to other martial artists there's no denying he's greatness how as a person he was little better than a thug.

@@felipe0102031 what are you talking about, he was employed by the government as a educator and a member of the Olympic committee .he was known for his anti fascist and pacifist stances.
