@KamaJiuJitsu

every school is different. we go by the original standards, so what we do is likely not accurate when compared to other schools. ours is white (3 stripes), yellow (no younger than 8 yrs old, 3 stripes), orange (no younger than 11 yrs old, 3 stripes), green (no younger than 13 yrs old, but younger than 16, 3 stripes). once age 16 is reached, adult belt system.

That’s what I’ve been saying I’ve been at it for 2 years and coach told me I’m very close to my blue belt but I’m not worried about that I just want to improve in different areas the belts will come later on. Both my coaches are just very very wise and can talk to them about anything . My main coach was trained under Rigan machado family very high standard training. Coach is a level 2 expert in combatives, knives, guns, ect has many other backgrounds, special forces, Muay Thai, Kung fu, 4th or 5th degree black belt in BJJ. And he always makes sure that when we are training to go into deep detail which really helps.

I'd like to hear thoughts on this. I think stripes make the most sense with white belts. The difference between a person who has had a white belt for a month, and a person who has had it for a year it huge. The high end white belts will consistently crush new students. Meanwhile at the high end, brown and black belts can have competitive rolls together with a person of either belt color potentially winning. For this reason I think the breakdown of levels via stripes within white belt is more useful than at any other belt level.
@sonnyc3826
@sonnyc3826 3 жыл бұрын
yeah thats what i thought he was going to say..as he said theres 36 tests in the gracie jui-jitsu system so i wouldve thought hed say the stripes were for that like 2 stripes maybe means youve beat 15 of the tests as one stripe would maybe mean youve beat 7 of them so you can kind fo see where each student is in the class...4 stripes id guess emans you get promoted to the next beltlike master the 36 then do soem sort of test then get the next belt

May be there is no point in differenciating a new white belt vs an experienced white belt. The point at the beginning being just to start learning, no matter the recognition, just for fun and out of curiosity. A new white belt speaking

I am a Blue Belt with 2 or 3 Stripes but had to quit because of health reasons. I wasn't the best student but I really wanted to make it to Purple Belt. My instructor wanted me to stay at White Belt a bit longer but relented and gave me the Blue Belt. I should have listened to him. He was a great instructor. He always used to say two things that I'll always remender. He would yell at the class, "Rest Tomorrow" and "Breathe". I got a lot out of BJJ and I respect Fabio Santos.

[TL;DR You only need to read the first two paragraphs the rest is a tangent.] This has been the case for most martial arts for centres. It's basically just understood that you can't really know what someone's belt means without training at their dojo ... you can only get a rough general idea if all you have to work with is belt color and discipline. This is actually a good thing to me because it doesn't foster a false sense knowing a lot about what a given martial artist is capable of. Besides, how much information did you expect a belt to convey about the wearer... [The rest of this doe not address the comment directly thus can be ignored.] I mean there could be a merit badge system, some disciples do have gi colors and patches that signify certain things but it's mostly competition stuff. I studied shoda-ryu for a couple few years and in our class a white gi was a student, a blue gi was an assistant instructor and the black gi was for sensei... our sifu only visited twice in my time there and he wore some kimona looking garment, I don't know about it really as I didn't ask. But to really know a persons skill relative to your own, you'd have to train with them or challenge them to a bout. You can just walk into most dojos and challenge the instructors, and they'll usually accept, you sign a waiver and maybe pay a small fee and wait till the end of the class for your chance to fight. I've never seen it in person except when I do it, but KZfaq is full of videos of idiots doing it... they're actually pretty funny. When I do it, I make it clear that I have nothing to prove and everything to learn, I'm just looking to see if I like the instructor and that I am considering joining, I also usually bring a small gift to show my graduated for the opportunity... also I like starting out thoroughly humbled. I've found that at most dojos Saturdays tend to be the best day to should up if your going to try challenging. Odd tip I can't really explain.

I rolled with a purple belt last week and it’s the most frustrating and humbling thing.. this guy is just kind of moving around me and I have no idea what they’re doing but before I know it my arms trapped and pushed up against my neck with his legs around my head choking me.. Hey man, doesn’t matter when you start. This what I Like to call “life style” is amazing. if you really put in the work into it and reach blue/purple/brown, it becomes a way of your life and honestly made my life amazing. Started when I was about 8 years old, sadly quit right before my 16th birthday. Regretted every second of it because I had the talent for it and was told “good chance You will be a black belt by 18-20” and have regretted quitting ever since.

I had my white belt up to the 4th degree for two years. Before life got in the way and I could get tested for blue, I moved, which took about a year and a half to get back to training. I joined an old school Jiu-Jitsu academy and the instructor told me “you have nothing.” I was allowed to train with my other school’s belt stripes for about a year until I received my new belt with two stripes sewn in. It took me about another year, watching lots of people get promoted, to get my blue. Because of my many life responsibilities, which only allows me to take class two maybe three days a week, I know it’s going to take some time until my next belt promotion. I’ve been learning to run my own race. Thank you Professor Ryan for all that you do! 👍🙏

Still the same at a Gracie BJJ school, it takes forever to climb the ranks. Only diff is you have a half step where you can earn a white belt with a blue stripe after completing the Gracie combatives program. You're still essentially a white belt until you test for and earn your blue belt after training for a total of two years or so.

Years do NOT matter! Gracie's system. You most be able to this consistently! White belt - Beginner Blue belt - You can beat a bigger, stronger opponents who are untrained. Purple belt - You can beat a bigger, stronger, trained opponents. (Massive learning curve) Brown - Noticeable efficacy in energy, speed and movement from a purple belt. Competition ready Black - Master; you are the competition.

JiuJitsu is not all about beating guys better or worse than you. If I come from another grappling sport like Judo or Wrestling should I automatically get my blue belt? I don't think so. My first stripe at white belt came after 2 months. That day I came in and started rolling hard. I didn’t give up and actually tried to use the moves I learned. My professor watched me tap a few other white belts and a couple blues. I got my first stripe. Turns out just showing up wasn’t enough on its own. I had to actually show I was learning and applying before moving up.

#kataarobelts Professor Ryan, I'm a 41 year old white belt just started BJJ with my kids a month ago. I came across your videos looking for gym etiquette. The knowledge and history you have shared is amazing. I had no idea the rich history behind BJJ/GJJ and the figures that got the sport to where it is. The main attribute I see is humbleness in the sport and sharing knowledge. My kids are 11 & 7. I look forward to all the benefits they will learn in the gym. Thanks for the great content. Really interesting to learn about progression in BJJ (as an outsider). For comparison, chess simply has a rating (called 'ELO') based on outcomes of games. And ice hockey simply has a binary rating: are you pro or not?

Traditionally everyone gets a white belt and through time the belt changes color through sweat, blood, and dirt. This was removed because it is unsanitary, but the belt system should come from commitment and time.

@@KainHowl that's actually a myth. Originally the belts were made to make it easier for instructors to tell beginners apart from the advanced level guys. More colors and stuff was added later to further organize and refine how the arts were taught. If you're an instructor with dozens of students it makes things way easier if you know were they're at by just looking at them.

What’s the more important in Bjj; Patience, self-awareness or straight up aggression?
@6omni6draconian6
@6omni6draconian6 3 жыл бұрын
There isn't a "most important", only "one of the most important". It's foolish to think one thing is superior to the other rather than comparing them and seeing their full potential. I hope that answered your question.
@JI77469
@JI77469 3 жыл бұрын
Boo Oui depends. Straight up aggression with discipline is an incredible thing to have (which is why wrestlers do so well in BJJ IMHO). If you don't have natural aggression, then patience and self awareness can negate aggression. The caveat is to PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS! Slow, sloppy BJJ is absolutely worthless.

My happiest day will be when I get my black belt and with all this crazy stuff that’s going on now this is the longest I have not been on the mat is five years. Can’t wait to get back on the mat. I’m not bragging and After watching this video anyone at 12 years to get a black belt will be a beast and very very good!!!!! I’m still learning everyday and I feel like I will never stop learning ,I love that about bjj

Thank you for this video. Very articulate, succinct, professional and a clear testimony of how humble the instructors are at Kama. They have produced so many profound videos - not just technique based, but sometimes deeply philosophical regarding the mindset a person needs in BJJ, to embrace the journey and accept growth and learning as tools to guide your life and lifestyle as a BJJ practitioner. Speaking from an Iternational, sub Saharan African perspective. What a way to get reach ("...teaching bjj to the world...")
