old school gracie jiu jitsu self defense. Many bjj schools should have these techniques at their bjj schools. Because BJJ was always developed as self defense system.

You mean old school Kodokan judo self-defense. All these techniques come from judo which is what Carlos Gracie was taught. They (Gracies) didn't come up with any of these. Unfortunately most judo schools no longer teach these. For the record: I trained at the Gracie Academy years ago and received my blue belt from them, so I'm not just some guy hating on them. I just believe giving credit where credit is due.

@@barrettokarate But, remember GJJ was born for the smaller person to be able to use it on bigger people. Historically, Kano jiu jitsu (aka kodokan Judo) didn't account for that as much, with many techniques failing if the person didn't have the size/strength for it. Also, the energy, used and leverage efficiency were improved for GJJ to make the techniques usable by smaller players. Yea, they didn't invent it, but they should get credit for improving it to be more functional. To be considered as a Gracie Jiu Jitsu technique, the technique had to pass through a filter called by the Gracies the Helio and Carlos Gracie filter. The filter has 3 elements. be energy efficient, based on natural movement so that anyone can do it, and have applications outside of the gym in a real fight. The additions the brothers made to the Kodokan Judo was primarily in the ne-waza, or ground fighting stage. Helio had found that his greatest success against his larger, stronger brothers came when he was on the ground and able to use agility to gain superior leverage. The Gracies favored a little-used position in Judo at the time, called the trunk position, which under their study would become a focus of BJJ now called the guard. Many Judokas used the position to some degree, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's ability to use it for control and transitions allowed it to dominate many other grappling styles of the time But, you probably already know all of this. This is mostly for anyone else interested and happens to be scrolling by...

What is fascinating to me is that I had learned most of these stand up self defense techniques training in Taekwondo. Korean grandmasters taught me them as part of Taekwondo's self defense. Of course we did not live drill them effectively like in this video, but it is interesting I understand all of them. I ended up eventually training in BJJ, including passing the Gracie Combatives test via video, as well as making it to blue belt rank in an actual gym.

Very, very nice! I used to practice both judo and karate kyokushin. I used them both in the streets for self-defense throughout my life ( I am 60 now ) about 80 times. Both arts worked very well with judo being way more efficient since one can throw or sweep a person the same way irrespective of amount adrenaline or drugs he has in him. The same kick or punch that can incapacitate someone in a dojo will make a little to no impression on a guy who is way high on drugs ( this is a reason why military feeds amphetamines to soldiers during an armed conflict ). All in all ( my opinion, based on real-life experience ) jiu-jitsu or judo is way better than karate for self defense. Preferably... practice both.

Do they teach this stuff at most BJJ gyms? I'm not a big grappler, and the whole ground game, rolling thing isn't really me but this video is amazing. I was wondering if you can learn this at any BJJ gym, or do you have to train BJJ and then you learn this as an added bonus?
@josemartin1727
@josemartin1727 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of Jiu Jitsu gyms these days focus primarily on sport based Jiu Jitsu with little to no emphasis on self defense. To better answer your question you need to understand that in a tournament there are rules, weight classes, and time limits. On the street those things do not exist. So what's the difference between Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?To be considered as a Gracie Jiu Jitsu technique, the technique has to pass through a filter called by the Gracies as the Helio and Carlos Gracie filter, the founders and creators of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The filter has 3 elements. First, the technique has to be energy efficient. Second, the technique has to be based on natural movement so that anyone can do it. And third, the technique has to have applications outside of the gym in a real fight.

you can learn many of the basic moves for blue belt in around 3 months, if you train min twice, better three times, a week. Most people can reach blue belt in well under a year, which would give you enough tools to address all of the most common street attack bad guy behaviors - head lock counters, chokes, arm locks, stuff like that. Make sure you are studying GJJ for street defense though, not BJJ for sport - that is, if your goal is self defense and not sport.

That women knows more about fighting and is more self aware than you will ever be 😅 Self defence is last resort on the street and it's better to at least know basic concepts than not know them. It's obvious that women in the first place would call for help, run or use a gun or gas if he has it. None lady would walk on the streets looking for a fight on purpose, so there is nothing misleading here if you were taught useful techniques and concepts.
