Grading every pick in the AFC South for the #Jaguars #Texans #Colts #Titans in the 2024 #nfldraft
Why I do Draft Grades Videos:
This is a fun exercise to visit how I believe these players will produce for these teams, what these coaches and players can work on to make these Grades look wrong in a few years, vice versa, as well as what these Drafts might tell us about a certain team’s plans or opinions on existing players on their roster or the types of schemes they are looking to run.
DRAFT GRADING CRITERIA
DAYS 1 & 2
“S” -Certified Steal
• Need, team/scheme fit check out and the value is better than expected
“A”
• Value, need, and team/scheme fit all check out
“B”
• Good pick, but one of the following apply
o Player was a slight reach
o Positional value in question (1st Round Only)
o Team passed on a better player at the position for the team
o Team ignored value at a major need (1st Round Only)
o Team/Scheme fit is in question
o An otherwise “C” graded pick due to value and/or better players being available, but a massive hole at a value position (QB, OT, WR, ED, DT, CB) was addressed in Round 1 with a still good player that wouldn’t have been available for the team later
“C”
• Fine pick but two of the following apply
o Player was a slight reach
o Positional value in question (1st Round Only)
o Team passed on a better player at the position for the team
o Team ignored value at a major need with (1st Round Only)
o Team/Scheme fit is in question
“D”
• Pick is in question as three of the following apply
o Player was a Slight reach
o Positional value in question (1st Round Only)
o Team passed on a better player at the position for the team
o Team ignored value at a major need with (1st Round Only)
o Team/Scheme fit is in question
OR Player was a major reach
“F”
• A truly inexplicable pick as player was a major reach, AND team passed on a better player at the position for the team, team/scheme fit is in question, or team ignored value at a major need or positional value is in question (1st Round Only)
"-" May be applied if pick required a high trade-up price
“+” For a reach following a trade-down
DAY 3
Certified Steal (Purple)
• Team stole a player who had a Day 1 or 2 grade who has a legit shot to be an impact player
Great Pick (Green)
• Team found above average value and a player with a legit chance to start within the first couple of seasons with the team OR a great role player in a key spot right away (Goal line back, #3 D-Lineman, TE2, dime back, kick returner, etc.)
Good Pick (Blue)
• Value lines up and player is in a great scheme or opportunity to find success as a starter or key role player relative to most Day 3 picks
Solid Pick (White)
• No notable criticisms of the pick but expectations should be tampered as with any Day 3 Pick
Reach / Will Regret Not Taking… / Not a fan (Orange)
• (Round 4 & 5 only) Player was a notable reach and/or notably better players would have been better picks, but the player still had a draftable grade
• (Round 6 & 7) Player was evaluated and did not have a draftable grade
Massive Reach (Red)
• (Round 4 & 5 only) Team took a player who did not have a draftable grade OR reached multiple rounds while passing on several better options for the position

Everyone agreed that Hutch should’ve been taken over Walker. Baalke can’t help himself with measurables. Baalke: He never rushed the passer in college, but he has long arms and is athletic!? 🤤 Don’t get me wrong, I like Walker but not with the first overall pick.

The Colts think Matt Goncalves has good inside/outside versatility. He'll likely be the first one in if any of our starting tackles or guards go down. (Also the C in Goncalves is pronounced as an S. So it's like "gon-sal-ves") Anthony Gould was an excellent return guy in college. Colts will definitely use him on kickoff returns this year. Colts have said they're gonna have Jaylon Carlies play LB, similar to how they used Ronnie Harrison last year and how the Raiders use Devine Deablo, so you're spot on there.
@king_supreme1102
@king_supreme1102 Ай бұрын
I anticipate he’ll be more of a guard. I think they like Blake Freeland as a swing tackle. I could see a world where Goncalves starts at RG (or maybe even Bortolini). Either way I really like our O-line depth now. I also really like Anthony Gould. See what we can do with his speed on offense and now we don’t need to worry about a returner. Also yes it would be a dream if they can turn Carlies into another Diablo. Would be a heck of a steal.

100% agree with Gould he seems like a good guy to start on PR KR besides the speed he seems like the best fit for that role

I think not only Callahan selecting Latham, but selecting Latham over Fashanu, Fautanu, Fuaga and whoever else leads itself to a massive admission of faith in their evaluation of the guy. Because if they wanted to stick and pick a more safe guy at LT after Alt was off the board they could have easily went Fashanu. So I think Bill Callahan's reports about adoring the player are accurate, and we're just going to have to see how he can shift Latham over to LT. He did it with Tyron Smith at Dallas, moving him over from RT to LT. And then taking a college RT in Wills (also Alabama) and turning him into a cornerstone LT for the Browns. Very curious to see how this plays out. He should have some good synergy with Skoronski at LG and Cushenberry at C. Also your trade back comment, there were reports that Latham wasn't getting past NYJ at 10. He was just more highly rated within NFL circles than on your board. It's not a right or a wrong thing, it's a wait and see. They had to stick at 7 to get their guy.
@yanksfan6833
@yanksfan6833 Ай бұрын
That’s why “experts” talking about trading back a few spots for “better value” is the dumbest stuff that comes out of draft analysis. Teams don’t care about media consensus on players and Bill Callahan (respectfully) knows a helluva lot more than Marcus when it comes to OL evaluations. Latham is a very good tackle prospect and was worth taking at 7 for the Titans
@KidCudi72
@KidCudi72 Ай бұрын
@@yanksfan6833 I hate it. I think the Penix ordeal has pretty much brought to light that your favorite mock draft guy's big board "4.0!" has no real baring on reality. We barely heard any buzz about Penix going top 10. Falcons shock the world and select him, and then we learn immediately after the draft that at least 3 other teams would have traded up to take him. Please stop saying teams could have traded back and still got their guy because you have no clue.

Mitchell is going to be a beast in the NFL. People always talk about TEs boxing out people with their frames but Mitchell truly does and in a whole different way. If the catch is going to be contested, he pushes his butt into the defenders midsection and reaches out as far as possible to snag the ball out of the air. There is nothing the defender can do about it. There is no way the defenders arm length can equal that of Mitchell's entire outstretched torso and arms. Hard to illustrate with words but if you watch you will see it.

Goncalves was a player i went out of my way to watch n ended up being just inside my top 100, solid technique and measurables, good in pass pro, he is lacking in agility so counters n speed moves might cause some pain but i could see him as a spot starter at tackle n maybe with some development on his footwork he can develop into an actual starter. (some say he could move into guard but I think that's just based on his frame n power, he imo would struggle heavily to create interior running lanes with his current skillset so he would be more of a liability in the run game than an asset in the passing game)

I’m a Wisconsin Badgers and Colts fan, and I think the thing with Bortolini that they liked above anything else was his versatility. He played all along the o-line at UW but finished at center because a transfer we brought in wasn’t ready to go. He needs to work on the speed of his snaps too. Something that bothered a bunch of badger fans all season was the offense was always a tick behind because the snaps took so long to get to Mordecai’s hand in the Phil Longo offense. Something to look out for.

Texans fan here- I was pissed when we made the trade and tried to talk myself into liking it but never could. I knew someone would get pushed down the board and then was SUPER pissed when we didn’t trade back up for Johnny Newton, Kool-Aid, or Cooper DeJean. I understand wanting multiple picks and splitting assets to fill out roster depth, but when you have the chance to get a top 10-15 player in the draft at 23, let alone 37, you pull the trigger. The problem is we had already put ourselves out of range to do that without basically trading away almost everything we got to move back in the first place. Super disappointing end to an otherwise great offseason

All 3 of those names who dropped out of the first dropped because theyve been injured and people dont know how they will come back and perform after their recovery. Lassiter might help right away and Diggs is better for win now than someone who is currently a junior in college.

@@brandonhallam51 We could’ve gotten Diggs either way. That has no effect. We moved back 20 spots to recoup a pick for next year, but that pick doesn’t help us win football games THIS YEAR. Johnny Newton would.

Ballard told Carlies on his opening phone call he’s being moved to LB lmao. Also the Colts released a video about their draft and Shane Steichen said explicitly that with the new rule change they’re looking for an explosive specialist when talking about Gould.

I’m excited for Jaylon Carlies. Extremely comparable to Divine Deablo and it’s the same exact coaching staff in Indy that drafted/developed Deablo. Also, Ballard doesn’t miss at LB.

The Texans used some of the capital from the minnesota trade to go get stefon diggs. That has to be factored in here.

Doesn't change much but the Colts do plan on moving Jaylin Simpson back to corner per their YT draft video. He only played S his last year at Auburn iirc. Still with his weight hard to see him more than a nickel CB

Texan. Hate the Lassiter pick. Tight ends can leave the guy in the dust. If he can't press, he's toast. Liked Fisher. Liked Calen, can see him starting at FS one day. Cade is as safe a TE pick as you can find. The rest is is whatever, nobody cares. So I guess we got a FS, TE, and T worth having. That isn't very good. No way we can be rated above a C.

I agree that the Lassiter pick is underwhelming, but I think the Texans did a good job at going "all in" in 2024 without hurting their future outlook by keeping their second round pick and still getting Stefon Diggs.

I hate Baalke. I gave a C- on the Reddit forum and I got racked over the coals. The only reason the jags are bad is the lack of groceries our GM gives us. Cant make a 5 star dinner with a slice of wagu beef and water mixed potatoes.

Baalke does this to me every year, I'm always out and then I look at the method in his madness and think "there's a chance". Its like he's making read the tea leaves to understand what the fits are, but I can't help it. So I'll play devil's advocate. I take umbrage on the Maason Smith evaluation, because for as much as you have to accept that he's not a good player right now, guys just aren't built like this, lengthwise or agility wise. Is that build realistically lasting to day 3? I know most jags fans thought he would be there at 96 and that's the range to target him, so its still early, but if you really want this guy I think you have to spend the capital there. Not to mention this is probably the ideal landing spot for a Maason Smith given that he won't have to start, he has guys with extremely similar physical projections to learn from, and he's getting coached by Ryan Nielsen while he's still only 21. Couple that with tape being hindered by the knee, and I think you can really get there with the Smith pick. Jefferson was my least favorite pick, a guy I had completely off my board because of the shit he pulled in Mobile, but... as much as I don't trust the pick, we picked up former LSU DC Matt House for the defensive staff, and he probably knows much more about his disposition than we do. And it fits a need, our nose depth was completely shot after Davon got his back infection, and this is a very strong nose with athletic upside. This could absolutely blow up in our faces, but there is some sense here, and its not like the other nose options in this class are, frankly, worth a damn. Robinson is another I have to opine on, because I'm almost 100% sure that we are not drafting him to play running back. Keilan Robinson is a kick returner, and his fit in the running back room will literally not matter, and that's what we wanted. Wiley, Shirdon, Vidal, almost all those guys that you (and I for that matter) had over him can't return kicks, so they probably were never actually in play for what we wanted. We are drafting him to be our second returner next to Duvernay for the new kickoffs, in the same vein of teams signing the likes of Shenault and Rees-Zammit to be special teams weapons. Is that a good idea? I have no idea, I don't know how you evaluate hand picking a second returner for the new kickoff rules, when we have no idea what that's really worth in the new paradigm. I'm just saying that, that's the fit, I think we like our RB depth as is and we don't care about getting him snaps on offense. Team reports that Cole was a Nielsen guy btw. There's a lot of really typical Baalke shit here, but the thing with Baalke shit is that while his process is different, it is consistent, and I have to respect that. I look at this and I think the team definitely got better, especially compared to last season's dumpster fire depth haul. Its not what you would do, its not what I would do, but... its not insane.
