Up here we have a 30acre field that had a subdivision put in next door. About half to 2/3's of that field was used by the developers to dump fill from the basements they put in. That was the deal when my brother bought the 167 acre plot (that had this field). About 5 yrs later we now want to develop the field for agriculture (vineyard) as the whole farm with suitable topography will be cultivated. So to make a long story short... county is widening a road nearby and needed a place to dump topsoil. Our site guy got us a deal where they pay per load to dump, and that money goes to him to pay for his loader and dozer to spread and grade it out for us. Meanwhile we are putting in a drive about 1-2mi's in length and so we also got a deal on millings from some parking lots being resurfaced. (Millings are free, crush n run gravel is not.) So with the loader here we took loads of millings night after night (thousands of tons) and the loader ramped it up each morning while the trucks came and dumped every night. So the long and short of it is we got millings and topsoil free. A nice backscratching session of trades.

I learned Dozers in the Seabees at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. I was sitting in a 1984 Model D7 in the training area at the moment the Twin Towers was attacked. So my career became more Convoy Security Element oriented and I didn't get much stick time in Dozers after training. Now I live in Switzerland and last week because I have a Dozer Certificate I was informed the day before that I would be moving 10,000 cubic meters of dirt that was coming from one excavation to backfill and grade a Farmer's field in the Swiss Pre Alps. Turns out the machine was a D5M xl. I googled it and found your video with the same machine, basically saved my career cause I haven't been in a CAT Dozer for years. I usually operate a wheeled excavator digging ditches under the streets for distance heating pipes, water pipes and tearing out old asphalt for street repairs. I never saw that type of controls for a Dozer before and your video helped me a lot, you can see the end result and the D5 on my twitter @DaryllDoe. Thanks for the videos!

Man I just had a flash back to my younger days working in Atlanta Ga. I worked at Atlanta Country Club and remember digging in that red clay. It was so hot you would sweat clear through then lean against a clay wall and your wet underwear would soak up that clay. No matter what you did to wash your clothes that red stain would not come out. Thanks for the look back at the good old days. I enjoy your videos.

Love the camera angle. I wonder with all that iron if you would be able to move the school bus size rock I had in my one field. We had 2 log skidders on it and an dozer... well it's still there.

I saw the title of this video and thought, I wish more guys had access or would watch KZfaq. I see some many inexperienced (and experienced) farmers rent a dozer to level or clear a field and push all the topsoil into a hole, and then wonder why nothing grows in certain sections. It likely happens more then we all think.

I haven't run dozer too much but we did rent a D8 one summer and I pushed 3 big dug outs in and I had a lot of fun and you can push a lot of dirt per hour. There are a bunch of guys that get all the top soil when the city makes a new subdivision and they screen it mix compost in it and sell it back to the home owners when they want to landscape their yards after the houses are built. One guy told me that he used to work hard with his construction company trying to make it all work and now they make way more money dealing and trucking top soil.

I think Komatsu hydraulics are the best. Our cat Excavator seems to want to come out of the ditch to fast. With our Komatsu you can drag the flat bottom of the ditch with both levers fully engaged.

What kind of setups do you have for screening and classifying dirt/soil/gravel? Have any videos with that kinda stuff, that I maybe haven't watched yet? Reason I ask is due to having 60+ acres, and I'm in the process of reclaiming/renovating the property including landscaping... There is tons of sand and river rock of all sizes... basically like an ideal quarry lol... just haven't figured the ideal equipment to build yet lol! Great videos and insight bud! Keep it up!

Every time I make a pass it looks like some California landscaping!!! The old boy that taught me to run a cat had two sayings, one was " you Kees the top of the blade full and the bottom will take care of its self" and my favorite was " good hell kid just make it flat, we don't need any of that fancy shit" lol. Your soil is like ours, it's almost idiot proof for stripping it off and knowing when you're into the subsoil. Brown and when you hit red stop. Some areas I've been alot of people wouldn't know the difference cause the subsoil doesn't look much different than the topsoil. Big difference in the smell of the two also

Oh like your vid on swiping J grass, wanted to comment that seems Round up can take couple weeks to burn down some weeds, vs 2-4D or others. I sprayed some fence rows in April, then in May, at 4-6 o/gal and seem like was 4-6 weeks till really burned brown.

KY regulations are the same way. Topsoil must be stockpiled and capped back over any fill areas.

I got a question that i think you might be able to help me with,, i need a good strong hardy grass to plant along the one side of my house,,i can plant grass and get it nice , then after winter is over its all dead and gone and have to replant every year ,,, the area only gets about 2 hours a day of sun and so is in shade most the day and it seems to stay pretty moist,,, so any advice on that ? Again i live in mountains of PA... any help would be appreciated thank you ..

How much you have to strip off depends on geography and what state you're in Alabama sometimes we would have to take off a couple of feet of the top it could stay on site if there were berms required that's where it would go other than that it would go to a farmer's field that was low down in Florida totally different it's Sandy ground you only have to take off a few inches sometimes unless you're in a low area where nature silts it in then you just take the dark stuff off the top but you were wondering if all that dust was good for you I don't think anything about running equipment all your life is good for you 35 years off and on a dozer to a scraper in and out of the dump truck your back is what will go your lungs will make it
