A really great series, very impressive group of young people. i thought the rapport between the instructors and recruits was excellent, no bullying or over the top screaming and shouting. NZ is justifiably proud of their excellent armed forces. All the best from the UK.

This is like no other army in the world. Period. I was present when we ( as the incoming rotation ) farewelled a NZ contingent on an overseas operation The haka they did brought tears to my eyes. There is Something very special, very emotional, very unique, and very moving as the soldiers in this doco slow march out of the Waioru marae past the two lines of their DS. I've just managed to finish watching this show. As a current serving soldier in the British Army Reserve, I'm more than impressed with the NZ army. To be honest, watching this show makes me want to join their army. They seem to have a bit of British military culture, mixed with their own culture on top. Unlike other ex colonial countries, I just love how they embrace Maori culture. Their warrior history, with a strong sense of family and community.

Completely different from when I did my training in Waiouru in 1979. Our fitness test was with full kit 16km not 4km and involved shooting, jumping, climbing and carrying. The time limit was 2.5 hours. Our shorter run was 3km in 14 minutes not 4km in 32 minutes.

Great Video series! I never forget to remember my uncles on Anzac Day. Served with the 28th Maori Battalion in Crete, Nth Africa & Italy in WW2. R.I.P Uncle Sonny Bishop R.I.P Uncle Wally Utetaonga Something I always remember about Uncle Sonny, he had a soft spot in his heart for animals. Didnt tolerate cruelty or abuse of any kind towards them. He had a "special touch" with dogs, cats, birds etc.. But didnt suffer fools when it comes to human beings! At a family 21st Birthday for cuzzy Wiremu (I was a 12yr old kid then) some stupid drunk young bucks tried to gate-crash the party. My aunty tried to talk some sense to them asking them to leave when 1 of them told her "fuck up bitch" & pushed her aside causing her to fall down. Uncle Sonny was just comin outta the toilet when this happened.. and JESUS! I've never seen him move so fast! Literally smashed the dude who assaulted Aunty Mihi ! 😳.. & took down his mates too!!😳... Aunty had to step in to calm him down otherwise he could have killed them! Later when I was in high school & studied WW1 & WW2 in History class uncle shared alittle bit of his war experience & some personal philosophy: " Do you know whats the cause of all the wars, misery & woes in this World? Its us human beings, the "so called" intelligent superior species. We humans are the cause of all the problems on this earth, not the animals, Remember that".

Certain sectors of New Zealand society talk much about the over representation of Maori in prison which may very well be true given the statistics. However their representation in the armed forces both now and years gone is also indicative of who they are as a people. I'm a proud Norwegian with viking blood in my veins but came to this country 17 years ago almost instantly building a kinship to the Maori people. If one portion of New Zealand society can only ever see and speak of the worse in their native inhabitants then I'm here to say, as a foreigner, there is also much good. None of us a perfect.

Yea, what's weird is, never actually being in myself, I knew it was coming. Guess that's what happens when you're in cadets with the CO's being legit CO's from their respective branches. Brutal bunch, you fuck up, you're gone, only because of the opportunities that were around where the base was. Air Cadets Ardmore, we literally had camps where we got to fly. So guessing most the discipline shit really stems from it being like in the air force at a younger age thanks to being able to have that chance.

@@MCshadr217 i see.. so thats probably a gift then. Because theo kho said that was probably from east timor conflict, and during that conflict, it was less likely they got it as a gift. Maybe it was given during some kind of bilateral meeting i assume post the timor conflicts.. (correct me if im wrong)

They wouldn’t be struggling with the PT if they put the hard work in before they joined. You can see who put the work in beforehand and who didn’t.
