Thank you for making this. I found an older Soviet-made folding knife in my uncle's basement with two strange blades in it. The knife contains both of the blades you show at 3:30 in the video. Now I know what the sharp thing that goes all around the top of one blade is for.

Hi there, I want to thank you again for the great videos you have made. I just got a new grafting knife I thought I would mention. I original grafting knife is a Japanese one sided carbon steel plain blade. It has served me well. I find the most important variable is the ability to sharpen the knife. For those who don’t have expert with wet stone sharpening than that is the first place to start. My latest knife is an old vintage straight edge razor. I got it from eBay for $6. The straight razor is designed to be sharpened at a set angle. On the opposite side of the blade there is a thin ridge. When sharpening you simply rest the blade against the opposite raised edge making the sharpening angle perfect. Even if the blade is old or chipped it can still be used for grafting and these can be purchased for very little money. The blade is amazingly sharp. The Japanese knife was $60 and there is nothing wrong with that. The Japanese knife is single sided and this makes it cut at a certain angle that sometimes cuts into the rootstock a little faster than ideal especially if making long graft junction. There is so much to learn about grafting. Another technique I added this year was covering non budding scion wood with cut thin cut paste to prevent water evaporation. We try to graft at the ideal time but sometimes we obtain unusual Scion that is a bit early or there is a mismatch between budding of the Scion and rootstock. I find conifer grafting to be more difficult than grafting deciduous trees. Best, Mats

Mate, you are a real master at what you do. I've learned a lot from you and since first watching your videos I have successfully grafted plums, figs, apples, peach and what seemed to be the most difficult for me, avocados. I think it would be interesting if you made a video talking about grafts that take, but maybe the union isn't so great, and what problems ( if any ) this could lead to later as the tree matures.

Frumos prezentat, si eu sunt pasionat de altoire si bineinteles, de cutite de altoit, de profilul lor, de grind, de tais, de pietre de ascutit si tehnici de ascutire, imi place sa ascut si cred ca filmul prezinta bine, faptul ca fiecare tip de cutit, a evoluat in timp, pentru o anumita operatie, practic, exista cutite dedicate cu care te descurci mai bine decat cu altele; si bineinteles, cel mai bun cutit este cel care il ai si il folosesti, deci poti sa ai si unul singur, desigur, cu mai putin confort. succes in continuare!

And be sure to use a sharp knife (the dull ones are dangerous as they block in the wood, you tend to increase the strength and they slip - so its important to learn how to block the knife, as I show in the video)

Unfortunately, I believe its only sold locally. But there are several different brands available online that are quite similar and will do the job. I could even get away with my smaller Victorinox if I had to.

Dear Sir your info is excellent for ma as a beginner. I am a Bonsai Artist and my question is can I graft something other than fruit trees, like maple Oaks etc. Also how about conifer trees like pine cedar, spruce etc. Thanks I am in Ontario Canada Zone 6b

Always excellent information. Looks like i will be trying to use some of your grafting techniques to save a bartlett pear tree in the spring. Fire blight has left only a pathetic Y shaped stick in the ground after it had a beautiful shape at the start. Do you have a video on fire blight treatment and prevention?

Hi, Pio. No, I don't use box cutters for grafting, but I know a few grafters that do and they work just fine for them. I prefer the grafting knives as I find them more comfortable on the hand, but you really have to learn to sharp them on the stones, to use them effectively in the long run.

Olá, Albano. Na realidade as mais antigas (de cabo plastificado) não estão afiadas. Raramente as uso atualmente. Para afiar uso pedras japonesas de grão médio a fino (geralmente começo com alguns minutos na de grão 1000 para retirar os toques na lâmina, passo para o grão 3000 para definir o perfil e acabo com o composto fino no cinto de couro (equivalente a uma pedra de grão 6000). Comprei recentemente uma pedra de grão 6000, mas a qualidade é inferior às outras que tenho (o preço aumenta substancialmente com o grão mais fino, nas predras japonesas de boa qualidade e, por isso, encolhi-me e fiz mal). One of the best options is Parafilm (a wax based specialized grafting tape). Its not very cheap and can be difficult to find though (try Amazon searching for Parafilm Nursery grafting tape).

Sorry, Steve. I don't sell trees or cuttings (lack of time for all the necessary contacts, packaging and mailing, especially in todays context). Your best bet is to find a local club or online group (like growingfruit.org) and try to buy or exchange scion varieties.

My larger grafting knives are local brands, handcrafted (like the "navalhas de enxertia Gilberto Ferreira", and probably unavailable where you live. Similar bigger knives can be found online from other brands like Opinel, Tina and other manufacturers. My smaller grafting knives are Felco/Vitorinox and are easier to find (Amazon has them), not too expensive and, as they are only sharpened on one side, they are easier to use when trying to perfect your cuttings for grafters with less experience. They are my backup blades and are quite versatile. I mainly use the Victorinox 3.9020 and the Victorinox 3.9110 "Budding Grafting Knives" models. Most graft can be done with these knives. This last one has a brass bark lifter that is very useful with techniques were you have to lift the bark.

Yesterday I ordered a very nice hand-made grafting knife from Turkey which, hopefully, will get to me. It was very similar to one of the Portuguese grafting knives.

With some difficulty 😉. Kidding aside, I have an older stone, a bit worn out on the sides, that fits the shape of the blade better. Or you can use a slimmer stone on the blade, instead of the other way around. The rest is patience.

Never used one, Pedro. They are not common were I live. So I can't say if they are good or not. As I said in the video,, with experience, any grafting knife will do the job, but I really like those made in Palaçoulo (a small Portuguese town, known for their knives master craftsmen).

stay away from stainless knives. they will never be as sharp as a high carbon steel one.

Hi, Jan. Stainless steel knives are notoriously more difficult to sharpen (they take more time on the sharpening stones and most people just don't have the patience for it) but if you do it well, they cut like a razor (at least mine do). High carbon steel sharpened over and over again, turns into a thin, extremely sharp, blade (the difference in thickness is probably the main reason they seem more sharp) and I use these knives for my main grafting. But my smaller, stainless steel, budding knives are always in my arsenal. Thanks for the comment.

On the low priced but good quality a Victorinox/Felco grafting knife and a dual bevel opinel carbon ( not a grafting knife) can work well for home owners. So does a utility knife. On the high end Tina knifes seem to be the choice. Sharpening is key for any knife. The bark lifter on folding knives that don't lock are very risky and every time I use one, if the bark does not slip instantly, I stop and switch to a fixed tool for safety. Great videos
