Song gave me the chills.... twice... once at the first chorus.. and again at the final one... I've loved Graham Parker for a long time... I've always felt privileged to know about him... and be able to share his music with my friends...

Graham Parker is smarter than the entire cast & studio audience of the Grammy awards... and a better songwriter than just about anyone.

I bought tickets and went to an Eric Clapton concert, but not for EC. Opening, was Graham Parker. I love Graham Parker, Lowell George and Zevon. My favorites.

probably one of the most under rated singer songwriters around. I just saw him with the Rumour and it was fantastic, however the solo albums he has been putting out for the last 15 years have been wonderful also.

I prefer his solo albums.

Is this song any less pertinent Now than it was 13 years ago when it was written? This guy is a genius!!! Weep the lost country.

A gem that hardly anyone knows. Very close to being the perfect song.

Everyone considers "Squeezing Out Sparks" as his peak. I would not swap my "12 Haunted Episodes" for it though.

Anybody know what tuning Graham uses for this? I'm transcribing it for a student, and his fingerings are definitely not the standard tuning ones I thought they would be!

That's why they won't play or promote his music. He makes them check themselves for stupidity. hahahahaha

Still making good music. This guy is so underrated but let's face it this is one of his worst songs. The lyrics suck. Just keeping it real like Graham would want one of his biggest fans.

On the contrary, I'd say this is one of his best songs of the nineties (along with, say, "And It Shook Me," "Wrapping Paper," "A Brand New Book," "Mr. Tender," "Worthy of Your Love," "Haunted Episodes," "Obsessed with Aretha," and "Sharpening Axes.") There's nothing wrong with these lyrics: the personifying of the state, letting him approach the social/political commentary from a side angle, lending it some subtlety; "You get what you pay for there," using a commonplace expression that, in this context, flares into fresh meaning; and, similarly, in the bridge, "We are not amused," critiquing the creators of amusement parks with their own lexicon.
