Award-winning director Ron Howard discusses tough times as his younger brother Clint wrestled with drug and alcohol addiction. Ron says he began to fear for Clint’s life as the addiction snowballed into delusional episodes and run-ins with law enforcement, but that Clint found his way out with the help of their father, Rance. Plus, we hear from Clint, who rejects the notion that Ron should accept any responsibility for his past addictions.

You know having been in addiction for around 30 years I can identify with Clint. I cleaned up many years ago. My biggest regrets getting on the dope. Time wasted, money wasted, and people I hurt through my addiction. Thing I'm proudest of is getting sober and having my family in my life. Plain and simple.

I'm so proud of you James!! My middle son has been an addict for 19 years, my daughter and youngest 8 years, I'm trusting God to arrange their deliverance, rehab in this country is severely lacking, he's only been once for 3 months, they sent him on his way with a bottle of Suboxone in his pocket, he was only clean a week, daughter hasn't gone yet, heartbreaking all around but you encouraged me, thank you & so glad you have your life back!! 💙🙏🏼💙

When Clint decided to make the change, I love how his father stepped in and spearheaded this, even though Clint was 30. You never stop parenting. Drugs can affect any family. It doesn't matter how much love and support a person gets from their family, nearly everyone is exposed to them. Some pass right by, and others have a brain chemistry that connects to the drugs and their effects. It takes a lot of will power to change this and a lot of support. I don't know why, but I really want to hug them both.

@@traybern Has nothing to do with it. Concern/love doesn’t cost a dime. Wasted, unsuccessful stints at rehab do, which is why nobody should go into it until THEY are ready/want to. I don’t think “forcible sobriety” ever takes, if the subject isn’t truly ready to give that stuff up. Going to rehab to impress/appease others will almost always fail. It’s putting on a show for others, to get them off your back for a while. Just being a loving friend, or brother, to someone doesn’t require being a millionaire. Is that the only thing you took from all this? The only part such a thing matters is bail and paying for those high-dollar rehab stays. 🙄

Has there ever been a nicer guy in Hollywood than Ron Howar?. His love for his brother, who seems to have caused great sorrow to the family, is truly touching. Parents should be strict with their kids and supervise them closely since you are taking a very big risk if they do not respect/fear your guidance. Trying to be your kids friend and being afraid of upsetting your child could lead to bad behavior which may never get corrected.

When your parents raise you “ in brotherly love”. It’s hard to see them falter. I have 3 sons, 3 that I would do anything for. I live each day knowing how fragile life can be. One of my sons has been in treatment/therapy for 2 years. At one point in time he looked like death, and I told him to get help, or he would surely die. We do not have the luxury of money. We are poor but we have a love for each other which will never change. I always told my boys to love each other cause when I am gone that’s all they’ll have, is each other. ❤❤❤

"Would do anything for him", this sounds nice on a Hallmark card. This the version of love that someone sold you. But in fact, it is codependency. We are each born alone; we die alone ; and **we must decide how to live, on our own**. Take your hands off of your son's steering wheel. Detach with love. Give that steering wheel to father God and your son. God gave you kids, yes. But when they're grown, it is time for them to go out, and be the purpose that was intended. If you helicopter too much, you are saying that you don't trust them to be an adult. Do you? This is not opinion; these are Dr Carl Jung's teachings.

He seemed like a decent guy. The next day I rented a boat with one of the other guys and spent the day fishing. Clint ended up leaving early. I believe the three of them had met in rehab. Not sure if he left because the other two were smoking, or for some other reason. Kind of wished later I'd invited him to go on a hike. Ron Howard has carried this image of himself as Opie and Richie Cunningham for so much of his public life. However through his movies and interviews it's pretty clear that he is no stranger to the darker edges of life and he's not afraid to tell it like it is and acknowledge the nitty gritty of human existence. A lot of people could benefit from having a big brother like that.

Clint was much better in sports and outgoing. Ron was a nerd and envied him. Poor clint was rode hard to crank out TV shows robbing him of any normalcy this led to drugs.

This is powerful. My oldest son went through this and it was a horrible time, he too made it through and has a beautiful family now. I’m so sorry families have to go through this torture, and often lose their beloved family member to addiction. I think sharing helps people. Happy for your family and stay strong

For those who didnt know this, Ron Howard's father, Rance, was in several of his son's movies and was an extra in at least one episode of the Andy Griffith Show. He played the ring announcer in Cinderella Man.

My middle brother played little league in Toluca Lake with Clint. I used to see Ronny at games and always, for some reason, in 7-11. Both were always cool, just local Hollywood kids.

I can't stop watching The Shootist with John Wayne at the peak of his power as a film actor. Little Ron Howard steals every scene he is in. He is the master in that picture.

@@joebeeler990 well the shootist was his last film and although he was only 68 when it was made he was in poor health, he wasn’t even the first to be considered for role as many actors had passed on the part. The peak of his powers as an actor was definitely the 40’s and 50’s, he made his best movies at that time. The last movie he really peaked on probably The man who shot liberty valance although The sons of Kate elder was decent.

Really enjoyed this interview. Ron’s aunt and uncle lived down the road from my sister-in-laws family here in Oklahoma near Pawnee. She said he would visit them occasionally in the summer. His family was really special and my sister-in-laws mother took care to check on them when they were in their final years. I grew up with watching Ron and Clint and they are special, salt of the earth and that’s what is really refreshing. Every day people with extraordinary talent and gifts!
