I think the conversation between him and Tao at the end, with the screen door between them, that was Walt's confession right there. Such a powerful film.

Yep. That's exactly what I noticed from the first time I saw this. The first confession he did was to honor his wife's wish. But he confessed what truly haunted him to Tao, so he could pay penance by giving his own life for him.

Walt's truck could have been built in Wayne, Michigan, twenty miles from Highland Park. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Walt Kowalski's gun collection seems to consist of weapons he used in the military. His rifle is an American M1 Garand, a nine and a half pound .30-06 gas-operated rifle. It was first issued during World War II, then re-issued in Korea before being phased out by the M14 selective fire .308 rifle. His pistol is an M1911A1, a .45 ACP semi-automatic handgun also issued during the Korean war.

@@Gnossiene369 - To be honest, I'd be kind of bitter if I were Walt. He hoped to retire in a peaceful and pleasant neighborhood. Instead, it filled up with immigrants and gangs, and Walt had to watch it all go downhill as his property value went to nothing. At least Walt didn't live long enough to see what it's like there today. Property values are in the toilet. You can buy a three or four bedroom house there cheaper than buying a new car.

There are places where housing has quintupled in the past 25 years, and there are places where things have devolved to where you literally can't give houses away. 50 or 60 years ago, Detroit was a nice safe area for working class folks. Now it's a literal ghetto with burned out shells of what used to be glorious homes.

If you think that every house on the planet has tripled in value in the last 10 years because someone on the news told you so... that's your choice. The reality is far different. Walt was a veteran with PTSD and survivor guilt, every war veteran who saw combat and lost friends carries that grief and anguish for the rest of their lives, for a society that has long forgotten their sacrifices. Clint had a colorful way of speaking and no filter, just true to himself, there was not a single act of racism in this film. I really like your reactions, you are perceptive, funny, and you have a great heart.

I'd argue that the gangbangers driving next to each other, or at least the young black guys were actually being racist in their speech against Walt. At least we don't know enough about all those younger individuals whether they just talk like that in general like Walt does towards every ethnic group and color.

Amen. You gotta earn everything from people like him, but once you do, people like that tend to be ride or die. Everyone should learn from a Walt Kowalski- that doesn't mean to carbon copy him, just take from him what fits in with you're own personality. There's a lot of wisdom there.

Walt knew he was dying so he sacrificed himself to save Thao and Sue. If he had a gun on him or shot first the other guys could claim self-defense. This way, those guys are going down for a long, long time.

This movie is phenomenal. TBF, Clint sacrificing himself for the kid and family hits harder than a Rambo shoot-em-up moment. Also, he was spitting up blood from cancer so it wasn't like his quality of life was up there. In a time when the country is so divided and the media is pushing divisive messages and tribalism, with social media amplifying the worst and most toxic voices, we certainly need more people like Sue Lor, bridging the gap between people with different personalities and viewpoints.

I got choked up myself when you were talking about brining your dogs to see you when you’re gone, so they know you didn’t abandon them. I’ve heard of people who give their dogs away because they’re not entertaining anymore or they move to a new house and they’re now inconvenient. This is unbelievable to me. All dogs want is to love you and make you happy. They think (and are) your family. How can people turn their backs on that? They trust you. It kills me every single time I just have to drop my dogs off at the vet. Just the thought in my mind that they might think I’ve given them away and don’t want them anymore is heartbreaking. For the record, if I ever get thrown out on the street, my dogs are coming with me. If it’s the end of the world and I have a couple of bites of food left before I starve to death, they’re getting a bite too. Sorry for my rant but it just came out of me.

I used to work for the city hall in my small town and part of the job was being dogcatcher sometimes and we took them all to a local no kill shelter in the next town about 10 miles away. It still to this day breaks my heart because most of the time it was people who got puppies and when they got bigger and became too much for them they just threw them out in the streets. 😢. So many people are cruel to animals! 😡

I don't think Walt was racist. I think he had demons that made him angry at the world. The girl brought him out of it. She accepted him as he was. He needed that. He did bad things in Vietnam and the media and public condemned Vietnam Vets when they returned home. That added to the guilt he felt. He was also dealing with the loss of his wife.

it's not how we wanted it to go, but it was the best Walt could give. He was old, he was dying, he had many regrets. This was his way to leave the world in a way that left people with a good image of him, instead of seeing him waste away to sickness while becoming more and more bitter and resentful.

Once I saw him cutting his grass and taking a bubble bath, I knew what was coming. Cutting his hair, the new suit, it was obvious to me he was not planning on living past that day. He has pride in how his house looks, his lawn his property and so he was tidying up before he died.

My uncle Edmond was just like him, a war hero code talker who didnt take an inch of $#!T when he came back. Notorious for beating down cops for drinking in public, notorious for standing up for his military friends (including my mom). When he died, 3000 showed up in this small town... and we fed them all a traditional meal (3 sheeps and 2 cows). They came from all corners of this beloved US of A to say he saved them, he fought for them... he is the embodiment of the USofA should be. Down,Dirty,Drinking,Dangerous son of a B#@%Ch you will ever mess with!!!! Semper Fi to the end........................................................

This is a very sad movie, as he sacrificed everything to make sure Thau would have a normal life and would never experience killing someone, worrying that he would end up in prison and throw his entire life away.

😞... At the end of the movie... "Hail Mary full of Grace..." ... A Catholic prayer for the dead and dying... When my son was killed..I woke saying this prayer..I'm not Catholic...it wasn't until that night that I was told of his passing... I'm so glad you re-uploaded this movie even though I saw it when it was originally posted...Clint is an extraordinary actor...🌿🌿🌿

He knew he was going to die, he sacrificed himself for Thau. The Canon or rifle you were referring to was his service rifle from the Korean war, it's an M1 Garand, used during WW2 also. I have a M1 Bayonet here in Ireland, I actually got in Normandy France. You'll see in a lot of Clint eastwood movies when he smokes he says "Got a light". Brilliant reaction.

Don't worry, dogs are very smart and spiritual animals. They understand when we die, they feel it. My mom's little ancient dog died the day after she died. I didn't have to show him her body, he was half blind by then anyway and couldn't see if I tried to. He just laid down in her kitchen and never woke up.

Clint Eastwood became a legend in youth, with a career that started in the 1950s. After his legendary youth, he REALLY became great. A true late bloomer, his acting got better and better once he got into his fifties. His directing career has mostly been a series of masterpieces, starting with 1988's "Bird". One of the greatest men the old Hollywood system produced.

The thing that bothers me about his sons is that birthday conversation. “Let’s send you to a home.” In my family that conversation would be “come live with my family so we can take care of you.”

The "Musket" was an M1 30-06 semi auto rifle. It was the weapon he used in Korea, where he earned his Silver Star (the medal the kids found going through his footlocker.

Outstanding film. For me, this is the best film of the past 20 years. Eastwood is a superb actor and director. I felt how you felt watching this film. I love how you thought of his dog and how you would want your dogs to come and see you after you've gone. Our animals, whether cats or dogs, are our family. ❤

The first movie I watched with my husband and I’m half Asian! 🤣🤣🤣 I laughed so hard at his insults and at first my husband was mortified then when he heard me cracking up he liked my sense of humor. This was an amazing movie, it was so sad at the end but satisfying his family didn’t get a thing. Disgusting how they treated an elderly family member like that.

If this was the first Clint Eastwood movie you have seen there's a treasure of great movies he's in. I strongly suggest checking out his 1992 western called Unforgiven. One of the greatest westerns ever made.

This movie exemplifies the problem with modern film making in my opinion. All the casual racism by Walt would never make it past the censors/backers in the modern environment and as such you'd lose so much of the impact. The fact that over the course of the movie and learns to not just respect but like his neighbours and vice versa. To see Thao is not the worthless thief he initially assumed but a kid who see's no better way to protect himself and his family and offer him a different path. To make such strong friendships he's willing to sacrifice himself for them and still engage in the casual racism because its who he is even while leaving his car to the kid he's been mentoring. It really is a great film and it says a lot about your relationship with your pups that it was Daisy being left alone that brought you to tears.

The number of stories I've heard from people who were once suicidal that changed their minds at the last moment because they thought about who was going to take care of their pets is both too many and not enough. Not everyone deserve to have a pet, of course. There are people who will never be anything but cruel, careless, and evil. I just wish everyone in need could have an unconditional furry friend to lean unto when times are rough.

If you think about it, Walt got everything he wanted in the end... He gets to be with his wife again, he gets to choose his way of dying, instead of dying a long and suffering sick death...he had a chance to redeem some of the bad things he carried around with him, and he gets to save Toad and his sister... I'm from Detroit, and I gotta say this movie was huge for us when it was released. Glad you took the time to review it! People saw a different, more serious side of life over here and gave it from a veteran's perspective too which I thought was pretty cool. I remember when they filmed it here. It's in my top 10 favorite movies of all time for sure

Really glad you watched this. (You said you had to stop watching these sad movies about a month ago!) It was a good plan. He was coughing up blood; all he had in store for him was a painful time left, so he killed two birds by relieving himself of the extended period of sickness and jailing the hoodlums. He got them to convict themselves and he was not commiting any more killings; he was just lighting his cigarette.

I use to have a great friend, now no longer with us. I see a lot of him in this character. He hated everyone, everyone hated him. He was actually one of the most amazing guys I've ever had the good fortune to have been close to.

I like these movies by older actors who are addressing the last chapter of their life’s story. It is quite apparent that the medical report told him that he was dying soon. So how do you want your end to be. Wasting away from Cancer or going out in a blaze of gunfire? This way Walt saves his friends and he gets to pay back the life he took in Korea all those years ago. Had he gone there armed he would not have solved the problem because he would not have gotten them all and the ones left standing could claim self defence. Also he would have taken more lives. Another movie along these lines is “The Shootest” starring John Wayne. Wayne was an aging actor dying of Cancer starring as an aging gunfighter who is facing a death by Cancer. When he asks the doctor, played by Jimmy Stewart, what his death would be like the doctor describes it as BAD and sums it up by saying “it’s not the way I would chose to go if I had your skills and courage.”

this is a great look at life in so many ways. yes eastwood's character is racist but he comes to admire the family that moves next door to him meanwhile you see how his family are and how they feel about him. the scene with his will resolves so many things.

When I was a kid, I had to cut the cut with a "push mower" just like Walt's. He was a racist old man because of the Korean war he fought in, he didn't like the changing of his neighborhood & mean because he had killed a kid in the war, like he told Tao, no relationship with his sons & his grandkids were little snots. Plus he has obviously been hiding his health from his wife because she was sick & he lost his wife. By the time he found someone that cared about him & he cared about, it was too late. The ending was all a plan. He didn't want the gang hurting Tao's family anymore, so he got a shave, a hair cut, gave his friend a big tip, took a bubble bath, went to confession, locked Tao in the basement so he wouldn't follow him, gave the dog to the old lady, then went to the gang's house & pretended to pull a gun. Now they all will go to prison. That is Clint singing at the end. Tao is driving down Lakeshore Dr. in a Detroit suburb. I used to drive down that street all the time, it is so beautiful compared to a few blocks away. If you want to watch a good movie of Clint's when he was younger, try THUDERBOLT & LIGHTFOOT.

Clint Eastwood has to be one of the best actors I’ve ever seen. No matter what type of movie he is in you will be transfixed to him. He basically steals the spotlight of every scene he is in. Johnny Depp commands my attention like that. It’s good though. The movie as a whole is well written and directed. He is extreme but to a much lesser degree most of the people iknew and the people my parents knew talked in this way back then lots of ethnic insult jokes and generalization. Good reaction. I like how you are thinking about how you would react.

Client Eastwood the GOAT of making classic movies.. Good the Bad and Ugly..Fantastic.. Unforgiven...Client wrote, stared, produced, Won Oscar Some say best Western..Morgan Freeman stars in it.. They have done other movies together, like Million Dollar Baby, again Oscar winner... Definitely check out Good Bad and Ugly this put Eastwood on the map, 1967...movie still holds up...music score won a Oscar

Walt on this movie was just like my dad---a Korean War vet himself, who actually taught me that rhyme ("spectacles, testicles, wallet & watch") when I was getting ready to leave the house to make sure I had what I needed. I saw this movie with my dad and turned to him and told him "they made a movie about your life!" and we both loved it. Love how much you love your puppies--ours are equally important to us. Subscribing based on this reaction--keep up the great work.

This movie teaches that family isn’t always blood. And you got me at the end with the “if I die before my babies” comment. Because I know it’s from the heart. I’m not crying you’re crying 😆

Think about it. Walt just lost his wife, he had cancer and the thugs went to prison. It was kind of a win-win for him. Still very sad of course. Great movie.

Great reaction, especially as you saw the character change over time. “Outlaw Josie Wales” is another outstanding Eastwood movie, it was the first one he directed also.

This movie was not set in Detroit MI. This is an accurate depiction of St. Paul MN. The screen play was written at a bar in North East Minneapolis MN. St. Paul MN has the greatest number of Hmong people in the United States. They were invited here because they fought along side American soldiers during the Vietnam War. We are lucky to have them with us. Good folks.

Loved your reaction. I am 72 and I can tell you that none of the words he used were nade up. I am a Vietnam vet and heard them and more. Never was much of a gutter talker myself but heard lots of it. It is amazing that you have never seen a hand-powered lawn mower, really makes me feel ancient.

If you want to see more Eastwood, there's Rawhide; a tv series about cowboys herding steers to the train station. Each episode is 30 minutes. The theme song was used in The Blues Brothers movie. A movie would be The Good The Bad and The Ugly where three men tried to find buried gold. My favorite is Unforgiven about a retired outlaw collecting a bounty with Morgan Freeman..

If this is your first Clint Eastwood film, then get ready for a bunch more. Clint has some westerns he starred in that are out of this world. He did a war movie called "Heartbreak Ridge" where he plays a platoon leader. He did all the same funny trash talking as he did in this movie. You cannot go wrong with his movies so enjoy the rabbit hole.

The gun Walt has is an M1 Garand. Shoots a big nasty round and has an 8 round capacity. And yes I would definitely call it a cannon cause it sounds like one when you shoot it.

This video is a perfect example of Actions Speak Louder Than Words & why people should stop being so emotionally sensitive to what people say because you end up judging & blocking people out that are good people. Also the most manipulative people out there know the art of smooth talking & how some people are easily won over and EASY TO USE if you say the right things. Only Politician's like Political Correctness cause they are the best manipulators & deceivers in the world. They want you to judge them by there words & not there actions. Personally I prefer Free Speech & Expression & believe people have the right to feel how ever they wish. Who am I to tell people how they must feel & speak? Honestly the only thing that bothers me is how others react to certain things they hear & see & start judging others based on that one word or group of words instead of judging them by there actions. Stop wearing your emotions on your shoulder & choosing to be offended & even if something does offend you chose not to react. Words are just words & can be interpreted many different ways & you don't know someone's intentions unless you ask & it doesn't hurt to ask people why they believe or feel a certain way either.

The rifle Walt had is an “M1 Garrand”. It’s was the standard issue battle rifle for the US during WW2. You are right to call it a cannon. It’s a .308 round. Unlike modern rifles designed around gorilla tactics to wound and cause your enemy to expend resources, the M1 and most weapons of the time we’re designed to inflict maximum damage and kill.
