It wasn't officially the fastest, but it certainly could have been if things had played out differently. This car was driven by Bernd Rosemeyer to approximately 269mph on the German Autobahn on January 28th 1938, but shortly afterwards he crashed and was killed. The land speed record at the time was 311mph, and was held by George Eyston. That difference is small enough that I wonder if the V16 could really have taken the record with the right conditions and without the tragic accident. So yes, this car may just have been capable of being the fastest in the world at the time. We'll never know for sure.....

not world record. German record (the world record was, if I got the date right, 484 km/h by an American). It's sad because a year later Mercedes broke the record (432.7 km/h, still today the greatest speed every achieved on a public road) and while trying to break the record again, Auto Union's drive Bernd Rosemeyer crashed and died. this is simple how he did this. he used the cheat system which is a separate disc. and selected TURBO. whatever car he uses, he can just click the anologue, or whichever button its set to and it will go this speed.
