I remember back in the 90's, trying to introduce Squarepusher to people in my town and they all thought I was crazy. "how do you listen to this noise" would be a common response. I always saw it as genius, captivating, art that couldn't be duplicated. I often wonder if both Squarepusher and Aphex Twin have mild or major cases of Autism? Whatever the case, it wasn't long after that both of them blew up and people started giving it a chance. My favorite of the two was always Squarepusher, as I thought he had a perfect blend of electronic and acoustic - along with his incredible bass playing. I couldn't get enough of his Jazz influenced sounds.

Same here, most of my friends from high school exclusively listened to hard rock, heavy metal and a bit of blend dance music. When I occasionally put on my kind of sound (Squarepusher, Autechre, BoC , Aphex Twin, Plaid , Wagon Christ and so forth) they simply labeled it as “music for loonies “ . Didn’t bother me as I always knew these talented people made crazy good music and I still listen to all this stuff as often as I can .. ;-}

In 2019, there's no doubt Squarepusher and other electronic innovators won't be remembered in the next century. He's like the Satie to Aphex Twin's Debussy.

I like the Satie-Debussy comparison. They're both pals and Richard is obviously more popular, but I still believe that both will withstand the test of time as their contributions are too significant. The mythology of Aphex Twin has just been much more effective (it's funny that he used to say he doesn't care about identity, but boy he's the genius of that). What also helps is lots of popular artists mentioning Aphex Twin every once in a while in order to come across as edgy.
